My 43rd Birthday: A Story in Photos

This post officially ends my indulgence around my birthday. Today is the kick off another Whole30 clean-up and No TV May, but first: cake!

Dave got me this cake cover for a gift years ago, but yesterday was the first time we’ve had occasion to use it. Cute, right?

This is what was hiding inside.

But before we could eat that, we needed an infusion of protein, in the form of lamb-and-pistachio kebabs (recipe coming soon)… along with all the necessary condiments.

Then fueled by cold Prosecco, we got all crazy with the noisemakers.

After that, we finally cut the cake. This is only the second time I’ve ever made a layer cake in my life. I’m pretty proud of myself.

Mmmmm… cake and birthday gifts – I got a speed rope! Look out double-unders!

  • Mel says:

Blake! Thank you for the bday wishes. Miss you like crazy. See you in a few weeks for paleo potluck!

Mary –> It was a really nice day – and that cake was insanely good. I just gave the remaining slices to my co-workers… back on the clean eating train for me! But yum, it tasted good to go to SugarTown for a day.

  • Lindsay says:

That looks like a FANTASTIC celebration 🙂 Happy Birthday, Mel!

  • Mel says:

Thanks, Lindsay! I really enjoyed myself.

    Being ’21 X 2 + 1′ = not so bad. 🙂

  • Joey says:

    Happy belated birthday!
    Wow,I never guessed you’d turn 43 more like 36ish:)

  • Mel says:

Joey –> You are a sweet talker, and I like it! Thank you!

  • Amanda J. says:

Glad you had a nice day. You are so cute with your cake and candle!

  • Angie says:

    3 things…

    #1- Happy Belated Birthday

#2- there is no possible way you are 43!!! Seriously I thought you were like 30-31. I wish I look 1/2 as good as you when i turn 43!

#3- as a semi professional cake baker- I’m pretty impressed with your cake making abilities! You should be very proud of yourself! That cake looks AWESOME!

  • Mel says:

Amanda –> I like to think the cake really made me look better 😉

Angie –> You are so kind with your compliments. THANK YOU! I’m especially glad you’re giving my cake the stamp of approval — that was hard! But I figured even if it looked terrible, there was no way butter, sugar, and cream of coconut would ever not taste heavenly. 🙂

  • Ann says:

How cute are you!??!?! And I agree, I would NEVER have guessed you at 43.

I can only hope to look that good 🙂

    Happy Happy Birthday!

  • Mel says:

I’m telling you, it’s the cake. It’s the best accessory!

  • Mel says:

Hahah, happy birthday! WOW, interesting – we share the same name & the same birthday (I turned the big 3-0 on Monday).

My friend posted on Facebook, “ACK you’re 30!”, and I wrote back, “Yeah, but you know what? I look & feel a heck of a lot better than I did at 20!” I’m stronger, faster, better, thinner… whee! 🙂

(And I also had a post-cakey day on Tuesday!)

    Keep up the great work!

  • Mel says:

Mel! Happy belated birthday! And congratulations on getting better as you get older — so awesome. Thanks for commenting… nice to meet my doppleganger 🙂

  • Mel says:

    Hehe, thanks! Same to you!

Wow, I can’t believe you are 43! You also guessed you to be about 30 years old. Good for you. Your cake looks amazing and you look so happy.

  • Angela says:

I just stumbled upon your blog and would love to keep reading it.. I was wondering where your husband picked up that cake cover? I love it! We are also just starting out trying to go Primal/Paleo so I will be checking back on this blog!

  • Kristin says:

You look SO young! Like seriously, younger than me and I’m 25. I guess Paleo eating pays off 🙂
