Tank Girls

Y’all know I like to get my overactive imagination involved in my workouts as often as possible, and today’s workout – “The Tank” – had me feeling like a post-apocalyptic superhero… kinda.

Do you know Tank Girl? It’s a British comic [and a 1995 movie starring Lori Petty and Ice-T (!)] about a punk rock badass who drives and lives in a tank (duh!). She gets into all kinds of scrapes and misadventures. She’s “a dirty fighter, and reasonably good at it too.”

In my imagination, this is how I looked during our workout (in reality, I was a sweaty, non-smoking mess):
The comic’s plots are not overly concerned with plot. As its creator said, “Never start with a clear idea of storyline. Instead, commence blindly, with a vague notion of trying to include a reference to your favourite band, gift shop, or chocolate bar.” Occasionally, British celebrities make cameo appearances in the comic, and Tank Girl once headbutted Princess Di to steal her tiara.

Tank Girl’s main squeeze is Booga, a mutant kangaroo. (Kinda looks like my Dave if you squint.)

So while my body was struggling through “The Tank,” my noggin was in a surreal landscape where I’m a former bounty hunter turned rebel warrior. It didn’t do much to help my time, but it sure was fun.

The Tank
For time:

  • 50 box jumps, 20″ box
  • 50 burpees
  • 50 kettlebell swings, 14kg (30.86 lbs.)
  • 50 situps

My time: 15:23

Thank you to Carla for being my Sub Girl (Tank Girl’s long-time friend and pilot of a submarine) and cheering me through the situps.

After jumping/burping/swinging/sitting, we did an Indian Run for about 600-700m… everyone runs in a line at a comfortable pace, then the little Indian at the back sprints to the front to lead the tribe. Repeat, repeat, repeat ’til you’re done.

THEN I ran the 3-mile loop around the lake with Booga, I mean, Dave. I brought it home in an unimpressive but kinda pleasant 30 minutes or so. I mean, it’s hard to run in combat boots and leather pants.

I kinda love Tank Girl. So did they change her from being Sub Girl to Jet for the movie? I always intended to read the comic, and have only read snippets at a time.

I'm not sure… I saw the movie only once and did NOT love it. I love the Tank Girl character a lot, but Dave's the one who's the expert on the comic.

You looked glorious and kicked some A$$! Great job!Pretty sure you could give Lori Petty a run for her money:P

  • Melicious says:

Barbara, you're sweet. I was disgustingly sweaty and probably took more rest breaks than I should have, but in my imagination… yeah, I'm cooler and tougher than Lori Petty 😉

I remember watching this movie a few times as a child. While I couldn't fathom how a relationship could exist between kangaroos and humans, it didn't matter much, as I was blown away by the Bad-ass-ness of Tank Girl herself.

I love cheering you on during a WOD. You have so much heart when you workout – it's quite magnificent to witness.

Completed The Tank and it was bearable-ish. It was the 15 wall balls and 200 m sprint x2 after that killed me. Haven't done the Indian Run yet however, it sounds sort of amusing. I could totally picture myself running to the front like a little kid…

  • Melicious says:

Hey, annibug! Congrats on The Tank!

The Indian Run TOTALLY feels like playing. We were all chatting and laughing the whole time — it's a good way to get in sprints without realizing you're sprinting. Yay, tricks!

Amber, there's both a Jet girl and Sub girl in the comic books.
