This weekend, I’m completely geeking out. I know this confession will come as a huge surprise to absolutely everyone no one.
Friday: John Taylor
So… I’ve written before about my John Taylor Problem. The short version is that when I was in high school, JT — bass player and founder of Duran Duran — was supposed to marry me and whisk me away to Paris. That didn’t happen, but I did meet him once, about ten years later.
Now we’re almost 20 years older, and in addition to continuing admirably as rock star, JT is an author. We’re both authors! OhmygodOhmygodOhmygod.
Sorry.
Anyway… he’s coming to Austin to do a reading and signing of his book In the Pleasure Groove: Love, Death, and Duran Duran. And I’ll be there… duh. Everyone, and I mean everyone… all of you… cross your fingers that they don’t ban us from taking photos because I would love to have an updated portrait of JT and I. You know, just for old times’ sake.
Saturday: Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th Anniversary Reunion
Unlike my Duran Duran obsession, which I can chart practically to the day it began, I’m not quite sure when I became hooked on Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was definitely after the series was off the air, so I’m really late to the party. But at this point, I’ve seen almost every episode (at least once), and I even dragged a friend to one of those one-night-only events in a movie theater where they showed two episodes of the show on the big screen. It was nerdtastically awesome.
This weekend is Austin Comic Con, and yeah, we’re going. And on Saturday night, I’ll be somewhere in the first 10 rows of the Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th Anniversary Reunion panel discussion. (Quick, somebody punch me twice for being a dork!)
Holy sh*t, you guys. The entire cast is going to be there:
Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard)
Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker)
LeVar Burton (Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge)
Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Worf)
Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi)
Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data)
Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher)
“Wil” Wheaton (Wesley Crusher)
Here’s the thing: I know my driver’s license says I’m 44, but clearly there’s been some kind of space-time mix-up, ’cause I’m pretty sure I’m only 17.
OK. I’ve geeked out. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Lately, it’s ’70’s sitcoms like “Maude,” “WKRP in Cincinnati,” and “Taxi.”
I also watch, um…man, can I really admit this?! Okay…”Real Housewives of New Jersey.” That’s the ONLY RH I watch (as though that makes it better).
And how about dorky crushes? I can’t reveal all of them, but Brian Williams is one.
Finally, I love “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Quantum Leap, and “The Twilight Zone” like you love “TNG.”
Brian Williams is the bomb.
Awesome! My husband and I are huge TNG fans and if we lived anywhere near Austin we’d totally be there too! Have so much fun and get pictures for the blog! 🙂
I was a toddler when Duran Duran were at the pinnacle of their fame, but I still managed to become a major fangirl in my late teens/early 20s. I’m so bummed JT isn’t coming to Atlanta. I hope you get great pictures and post them!
For you Austinites going to Comic Con – I’m so very jealous stuck here in Houston. My friend Jeremy has a booth there (he’s a comic artist) and has sworn to be at the TNG chat to get me something signed by Patrick Stewart, lol.
Star Trek TNG is definitely one of the greatest shows ever on television. I am incredibly jealous that you’re going to the reunion, have the best time ever and hug JLP for me please! Have you seen the STTNG fashion blog, Fashion It So? http://sttngfashion.tumblr.com/ YOU’RE WELCOME
I think Dave should be jealous because John Taylor was clearly in love with you and probably still is. 😀
Ron loves anything Star Trek and can recite quotes like nobody’s business. I’m more into dark-ish humor like Breaking Bad. I’ve probably seen every episode of SNL from the beginning, but thank god I can watch it online instead of trying to stay awake that late!
GUUUUUURRRRRL.
My heart will always belong to Nick, but think of me anyway when you see John, okay?
…asks the girl who never feels guilty about *any* of her pleasures.
XOXO
My GP is singing along to New Direction songs in the car….and crushing HARD on Adam Levine from Maroon 5.
….he’s on a pay phone trying to call home, all of his change he spent on me!! Lol
I was always a Simon girl =)
One Direction…..SEE I’m so old!! Creepy old broad singin I the car!!!lol
I still have my Duran Duran buttons from high school – with, of course, John Taylor! I wore them on my school jacket 🙂 Was also very many of the other 80s hair bands, Bon Jovi, Cinerella, Poison, Def Leppard. Still love them!
Hope you get a picture with John!
My goodness gracious, he’s adorable! I think I have a new crush.
I was in love with John Taylor, too. What good taste we had (have)!
I think he’s even better looking now. Sigh. I miss the eighties.
(Love your hair in the photos!)
OMG, so JEALOUS! I was also majorly obsessed with Duran Duran in high school. Posters, videos, hair styles. Oh my. (And Live105, too!)
ST:TNG is very cool as well. That panel is going to rock! 🙂
I was going to marry Simon Le Bon! The Duran Duran helicopter was going to land in the middle of my junior school field and whisk me and my best friend to France. She was going to marry Nick. Lordy! I saw Simon years later and I was like a deer in headlights. Crazy how those teen feelings resurface 🙂
I’m usually in for the workout posts, but this is all hilarious. And I don’t even like Duran Duran or ST: TNG.
I almost crashed my car when I heard on xm radio that JT wrote a book! So excited! I have a thing for bass players and JT and Sting are my faves from the 80’s. I had DD and Police posters wallpapering my room in high school. And seriously, Patrick Stewart is a sexy man.
What are you dressing as or who?
I will be dressing as a nerd for Comic Con, i.e., like I look every day 😉
I remember seeing Duran Duran the winter of my senior year of high school (1984). I screamed so much I had no voice for three days. Simon and Roger were my favorites, although a few years ago I saw Nick in Greenwich Village in New York. Yes, he was wearing makeup. He looked like Lurch from the Addams Family.
Your hair is blonde! ahh that is great and you look so stoked to see him.
Guilty pleasure hmmmm…Antique Road Show shhhhhhhh (embarassing)I like to guess at how much everything is worth before they release the price.
Big Bang Theory all the way!!! And Harry Potter. I’m 30 and both are ringtones on my phone and I’ve seen every episode and movie and read every book.
Hi, everyone! Quick update on my geekdom:
1. YES! Blonde hair. I’m naturally blonde… and I LOVED that bowl cut so much. I’m thinking about doing it again, but staying with black hair. Maybe when I move to Prague…
2. Comic Con was awesome. Dave took some badass photos of peoples’ costumes that I’ll be sharing this week.
3. Meeting John Taylor was kind of a bust. He did a really wonderful Q&A with a music journalist from Austin, then read some passages from his book and took questions from the audience. He was very charming and self deprecating. Then he signed our books, which felt like an unavoidable business transaction. When he handed me my signed book, he barely made eye contact, and he was on to the next book to sign. Kind of disappointing. I didn’t expect anything special, but something a little more human would have been sweet.
Aw, too bad meeting John Taylor was a bust. 🙁 But, can’t wait to see your comic con photos! 🙂
Aaaaaah!! I LOVE Star Trek… all of them! Even the last/newest sorta not all that great one… just because it’s Star Trek. Haha! But I especially, ESPECIALLY love Voyager, TNG, and DS9!
I’m really a huge sci-fi geek in general… like I LOVE Stargate (SG1 the most, Atlantis after that, and Universe only because it was Stargate).
And don’t even get me started on Doctor Who…… I feel like my soul gets sucked in & parts of it disappear when I watch DW…
I too am a recovering Duran Duran fanatic… and John Taylor has aged well.. so, I’m completely jealous!
That’s a bummer about JT. I met a famous Australian singer that I’ve always loved last year and he was DEAD BORING. No personality at all and maybe too far up his own arse to even pretend to be interested. Anyway he did tell me in conversation that he was vegan. He’s probably just hungry poor chap!! Never got into star trek but I did watch The Bill for almost 20 years. That’s an addiction!!!
