I did an AMRAP today!

Doing a workout probably doesn’t seem like headline-worthy news to most people, but for me, it’s a big deal.

Maybe even a Big Deal.

It’s been about three years of digging out of the hole dug by adrenal fatigue and thyroid woes, but I’m feeling pretty good these days. Good enough that in addition to my M/W/F weight sessions at the gym, I’ve added a class on Tuesdays that’s primarily met-con(ish). Last week, we did a circuit with built-in rests and a finisher that included 50 pushups. The pushups were broken up with other movements, and they still took me forever and beyond to complete. But I did them all.

Today, it was a 25-minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible), and I loved every sweaty, breathless minute of it (in that way where you can love something and want it to stop please stop make it stop I wanna stop). I kept an eye on my heart rate monitor and took a few catch-my-breath breaks so I wouldn’t overdo it. It was pretty awesome. Here’s what we did!

workoutDisclaimer: I did not wear hot pink while doing my band pull-aparts, nor did I magically transform into a 20-something dude during the workout. Photos are for illustrative purposes only. I wore all black, obvs, and my red Converse.

25:00 AMRAP
20 band pull-aparts
10 wall ball, 10# ball
10/side alternating overhead dumbbell press, 15# dbs
10 med ball slams, 15# ball
10/side alternating heavy rope wave
20 TRX rows

I finished six full rounds plus 20 band pull-aparts. Then we did a finisher…

finisher

3 rounds, :20 on / :20 rest
1-leg plank, 1-leg plank, hollow hold
air squats (I did 18, 19, 20 — LOVE when I get faster as I go)

So there it is. My first AMRAP in… I don’t even know how long. It felt so good, I celebrated with a walk in the sunshine and snow while I ate my post-workout sweet potatoes and chicken. And I made time to meditate this afternoon, too. Self care can be annoying, but some days, it’s also pretty fun.

Tell us what you did for yourself today. (And if you haven’t done it yet, there’s still time!)

This makes me crave a met-con! I got out of bed early on a day off to I add a second prenatal yoga class to my week. So worth it.

  • Kim says:

I was up bright and early for the 6AM WOD:
    4×3 Push Jerk
5x 3min AMRAP (1 min rest between each)
    5 Ring Dips
    10 KBS
    20 DU

    It was a burner!

Glad you’re up for an AMRAP! 🙂

Congratulations! It is always worth celebrating the steps towards recovery!

Oh my god, I am SO HAPPY for you and not gonna lie a teensy bit jealous but MOSTLY HAPPY! Congratulations!

I’m back to yoga and walking (after pushing myself too hard a couple weeks ago with some boxing practice interspersed with bodyweight stuff). Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever lift a barbell again, but that’s not a helpful train of thought. *sigh*

  • So glad to hear you are feeling better! I know how hard you have worked on your health and how patient you’ve had to be. Go Mel!

Awesome! I love your blog! This morning I ran 1.75 miles and did a few arm and core exercises. I am going to try your workout above tonight! 🙂

Glad you’re feeling better! I love a good AMRAP (until I’m doing it, then I hate it). Today is snatch work. WOOT.
