A Lazy Sunday

It’s a lazy Sunday around here. I just ate some salmon cakes, drank a cup of tea, and completed both the crossword and the Jumble in our local newspaper. Now my biggest to-do item is deciding if I’m going to read on the couch or crawl back under the blanket on my bed. Before I do either, I wanted to share some things that are making me happy and got me thinking today. In no particular order…

I really loved this post How Not to Talk to a Fat Person, written by David Leite of Leite’s Culinaria (one of my favorite, non-paleo food sites). I so relate to his stories! When I was in 10th grade, my guidance counselor — the GUIDANCE COUNSELOR of my school — told me, “You’d be such a pretty girl if you just lost some weight.” That shit stays with you, no matter what the rest of life brings your way, you know?

Dave and I went cross-country skiing for the first time ever yesterday! We are intentionally making “mean face” in the photo — we had a really fun time! It was 20 degrees and brilliantly sunny. We even saw a rainbow in the clouds! (And a unicorn peeking out from behind the trees.) I definitely need to work on my technique, but it was an exhilarating way to kill an afternoon and then we came home and watched this awesomeness…

The New England Patriots are just one game away from making it to the Super Bowl, and I’m ridiculously excited about that. Winner aside, last night’s game between the Pats and the Baltimore Ravens was great football. So close! So many great plays! If you missed it and have cable, definitely look for a replay on NFL Network.

magazine1

Photos of our Well Fed magazine out in the wild have started rolling in. Thank you to all you sweet people who’ve shared your images with us! The publishers let me know that the magazine will be available on Amazon at some point, so people (like us!) who don’t live near a Whole Foods can still get a copy. I’ll keep you posted on when that happens.

timeline-header

I’m on Day 13 of my Whole30, and as of yesterday, I’m feeling really good! A few days ago, it was another matter entirely. Holy cow! It’s amazing to me how different each Whole30 experience can be. I was struck down by a headache last week that lasted 36 hours and made me feel like my face was going to pop off my skull. Then I had food dreams! As I wrote on Facebook: “I’m on Day 11 of my Whole30, and last night —for the first time ever — I had the infamous “food dreams.” I dreamt that I’d eaten ice cream twice, and I was SO upset in the dream. Then when I woke up, I was all stressed out until I was fully awake and realized it was just a dream. I don’t even like ice cream that much!”

If you’re not familiar with the Whole30 timeline, you might want to check it out.

And if you don’t follow me on Facebook, pop on over there and read the funny responses my post received from other Whole30-ers. I’m not the only one with weird food dreams! Skittles showed up twice, along with a girl who dreamt she had to eat her way out of a cake!

Despite the fact that our weird little town in Vermont has neither a neighborhood bar nor a Target closer than 90 miles away, it does have a world-class theater for plays and musicals (because we are, thankfully, close enough to New York City that it’s romantic for actors to come here). We subscribed to season tickets and the first production was Into the Woods. It was so delightful, we saw it twice. Then when we were in Prague, we saw a production there, in English, with a mixed cast of Czech and American actors. I’ve been singing “Into the woods… to grandmother’s house… and home before dark” for months. I loved the big screen adaptation! All of the actors did a brilliant job, and the magic of the woods coming to life was totally engrossing. I sometimes wish that the second half of the show wasn’t quite so melancholy because the first half is such a frothy good time, but it’s hard to fault the underlying truth of the story. We have to appreciate the fairytale moments and the hard truths of real life, in equal measure.

museumofextraorinarythings

During our Reading Day, I devoured The Museum of Extraordinary Things. I read the whole thing in that one, magical day, and it was everything I hoped it would be. I won’t give too much away, in case you want to read it, but it has romance, hardship, betrayal, kind people, freaks, devastating fire, redemption, adventure, secrets, and loyalty in a setting that has as much life as the characters. Whew.

What are you up to? Seen any good movies? Read a good book?

I have that book ^^ in my wish list. Can’t wait to read it.

One of my goals for ’15 is to improve my cooking skills. (Getting back to basics.)

I recently read Julia Child’s memoir and I’m about to dig into Jacques Pepin’s memoir next. I usually read fiction, so this is a departure for me.

I just watched a fab movie on Netflix that nobody ever heard of: A Touch of Spice. It’s a Greek/Turkish movie. I also recently watched two French movies about food: Le Chef, and Haute Cuisine. And lastly, Today’s Special is an adorable movie.

My husband worked on the running track at Dartmouth last year and he adored that part of VT/NH. I grew up in NYC and we vacationed in the Stowe area a lot. I love New England and Quebec. A lovely part of the country and I miss it.

I bought the Well Fed magazine even though I already have your cookbooks. I’m hoping that if many people purchase it at Whole Foods, they might be more open to Paleo. I’m so tired of them pushing their lowfat/high grain/meatless agenda.

    Melissa,

I am still hoarse after yesterday’s Pats game, what a hummer! Loved Edelman’s td pass!!! After a morning of cooking up hot plates and Persian soup, I’ve been snoozing to the lullaby sounds of the green bay game. Day 11 on Whole30 for me, and have the sleepies big time… Zzzzzzzz. But the soup! Brilliant, Melissa, just brilliant. We did the pesto, sauteed chicken, and onion-raisin toppings and glowed in the taste and warmth on this cold NH day. So yummy! Thank you again! It was just the ticket before an indulgent nap.

We just spent the weekend in Vermont with family and had your salmon cakes (tex mex style) for lunch! They are seriously genius… we’ve been making them at least every other week for the past year since buying Well Fed and never get sick of them. We brought a batch of them and your chocolate chili to my boyfriend’s mom who is doing her first Whole 30 🙂

20° and sunny is perfect cross country skiing weather. You picked a good day for your first try.

  • I’ve just read Burial Rites by Hannah Kent which I absolutely loved – an amazing story, which also made me grateful for good food, as the characters (in 19th Century Iceland) mostly live on lamb gristle soup and viscous herbal teas.

I saw Selma this past weekend and think it’s worth seeing. I also kind of loved Chris Rock’s Top Five, but you have to be in the mood for Chris Rock.

By the way, I think I’ve made just about every variety of your salmon cakes. My boyfriend loves them and we’re addicted. Love that wild salmon is about $3 at Trader Joe’s too!

  • I’ve been cheating in my dreams, too! First I dreamt that I sampled chocolate truffles and a cookie while cruising through Whole Foods, and then I dreamt that I ate some pumpkin pie (which I don’t even like) at a pie-making class. So funny!

I finished The Girls at the Kingfisher Club by Genevieve Valentine last week. It’s been on my to-read list on Goodreads forever and once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. I mean, the twelve dancing princesses fairy tale set in Jazz Age NYC? What’s not to love?

Just a quick question about the Well Fed Magazine. I bought a copy at B & N. On the cover, very bottom item is Vietnamese Pho…
I can not find it inside though??? Can you share a recipe for this?
