Improvised Cookbook Holder

I’ve gotta give props to Well Fed cookbook owner Jonathan Kaufman for his ingenious improvised cookbook holder. Pretty sweet, right? (Jonathan tweets about Paleo food as @kaufmantenor.)

You guys would freak out if you could see how I abuse my copies of Well Fed and Well Fed 2. I literally lay them on the counter and use them as placements: I measure on top of them; slop liquids all over the pages; move them around with spice-encrusted fingertips. My mom has encouraged me on countless occasions to get a cookbook stand, but where’s the adventure in that?!

How do you manage your cookbook while you’re cooking?

My cookbooks are a mess, too. I figure they are supposed to be that way. Like Chuck Taylors, they just look weird all fresh and clean.

That hanger is genius! Right at eye level!!

  • Allison B. says:

Great kitchen hack! Will definitely try this.

If I had knobs on my cabinets, maybe…as it is, I’m with you! I don’t get upset anymore when my cookbooks (and all my other books, for that matter) get splashed on; I figure it’s a sign of a well-used, well-loved (Well Fed!) book.

that kitchen hack is such a homer simpson d’oh moment. time-saver, back- and eye-strain saver!

That’s how I find the recipes I like best, the pages are almost stuck together. Actually, for your books, I printed out the .pdfs and stuck them in sheet protectors and a binder. Then I loan the book to susceptible people. Sometimes I get it back. I’ve bought 3 copies of Well Fed. Thank you for giving us the option to print! I’m finding it difficult to really get into any of the paleo books in depth that have been released in the last six months. So many great recipes, not enough time! Yours are still desert island material. Thanks Melissa!

GENIOUS – Thank you Jonathan and Mel!

I do it exactly like you. I do try to wipe off the pages and shake out the crumbs before closing the book though 🙂

I have Well Fed on my iPad. I can put the iPad in a ziptop bag to keep it clean but I usually don’t. My iPad’s cover doubles as a stand, though, which helps keep off everything but the splashes.

  • Heather says:

    OMG. that is GENIUS.

I had my copies of WF and WF2 spiral bound. Now they lay flat and fold in half to take up less counterspace. I found the suggestion in an old amazon review & am a total believer!

My ipad with your website, sits on top of my copies of Joy of Cooking and Nourishing Traditions. I’ve got the WellFed PDF that came with a Paleo Plan package on my laptop, but I don’t bring that to the kitchen that often. I refer to it and cross reference those recipes with your online recipe index. I need to get the books downloaded to my ipad and I’ll be all set- although, paper additions would let me write notes in the book. Hmmm…

I had to giggle at this because I did something similar the other day.
On my bread bin I have a bit of no slip matt where I keep my cookbooks.
My sister got me Against All Grain and the darn book wouldn’t stay open on the page I wanted.
I had a door hook (that goes over the door frame), lying around in the kitchen (i have no idea why it was there, it just was), and it worked perfectly. It kept the book open at the page I wanted.
