My Interview with Kickass Witch

I had the distinct pleasure of being interviewed by Joanna DeVoe, aka the Kickass Witch, yesterday. We talked about our favorite Well Fed and Well Fed 2 recipes, the magic of spices, the singular delights of elimination diets… and Smudge made a guest appearance.

You can learn more about Joanna, watch more of her videos, and read her blog on her web site. I think she’s sweet as Sunbutter, and I like to look at her because she reminds me of Galadriel. Here’s our interview:

About the resistant starch thing. One effective form is a few tablespoon of potato starch dissolved in water. While not horrible to taste, it’s not going to lead down the path to temptation.

Cold rice is another matter however…

So if you want to try resistant starch start with Bob’s Red Mill potato starch (NOT flour)dissolved in some water

  • Lydia says:

Also, your eyebrows are fantastic. Have I ever mentioned?

    • Mel says:

Dave got me that mug. Pretty sweet, right?!

And thank you for the compliment! I just dyed them so they’re particularly dramatic right now.

  • Joanna DeVoe says:

Yay! THANKS again for the YUMMY recipes & taking the time to chat with an adoring fan :O)

  • Ehsa says:

Super interview! You are so articulate! And, of course, I just adored Smudge’s guest appearance … such a cutie.

  • Carol says:

Great coffee mug. Awesome interview! Adorable cat.
Am on my first Whole 30. WF1 & WF2 are my Cookbook Bibles. The Well Fed series provides dishes and menus that are exciting to make; the fabulous and spicy tastes are replacing my need for cookies, crackers, and other tasty treats without the “food with no breaks” results. Am looking forward to Well Fed 3. Maybe you can do one big cookbook after that called Wed Fed 1-2-3 that combines everything!

    • Mel says:

Congratulations on Whole30-ing! Good for you! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the recipes in Well Fed and Well Fed 2. And yes, I’m already working on the next cookbook, but it probably won’t be published until 2016. Holy cow! But between now and then, I’ll be sharing some of the new recipes on my site!

  • Carol says:

That sounds wonderful! I’m staying tuned!

Good interview. There is one thing that made me sit up and take notice. I’ve been dragging my feet about doing an elimination diet, because I’m lazy and they sound like so much work. Then you mentioned something about circular thinking and how eating clean resolved that for you. That’s really interesting to me because I never even imagine that’s something diet could address. I guess we keep forgetting how much biochemistry affects us. We think we are just who we are and don’t realize how much of that is based on our internal chemistry and maybe even on the action of the micro biota we carry around with us. I get them the circular thinking often. I’m a little blown away that eating clean can fix this.

    • Mel says:

Yes, eating clean stopped the “swirly thoughts” for me. The only time they kind of return is during PMS week, but it’s far more mild than before. As soon as I eat too much sugar or even a little gluten, the circular thoughts start again. It’s nutty, but now that I know, it’s easy to manage: I just keep eating clean 🙂

Terrific interview. My husband and I are doing our first Whole30 and we are on day 14 day(yay) anyway we came across your cookbooks and love, love, love them. We made the Chocolate Chili, and Cinnamon beef stew and some others. I found that all the flavors are fascinating. Who knew what a bunch of spices can do to your palate. So thanks again, and by the way, we reccomended your cookbooks to several of our crosssfit friends and they are inspired.

  • Such an enjoyable interview! Thanks for doing and sharing! xo

  • Terrell Bond says:

Great interview! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Well Fed. I got it for Christmas and have learned so much already. Your weekly cook up is brilliant. It makes my like so much easier. When I know I have deliciousness in my fridge for M-F, my week is more enjoyable. And, roasting meat in my slow cooker (Slow-Cooker Italian Pork Roast) has made me so happy and I have used the technique for beef roasts as well. Thank you!!

    • Mel says:

I’m so glad you love Well Fed… thanks! The crockpot as a meat roaster is pretty great, right?! I had no idea until I got lazy and just started plunking meat in there 😉
