I Dress Up Every Day

I am bad at Halloween.

Part of it is that I feel like I dress up in costumes every day: “Today, I’m gonna wear all black and red lipstick, like a sitcom character pretending to be a spy.”

And part of it is that Thanksgiving is my numero uno holiday.

And another part of it is that here in Austin, Texas, it’s still in the mid-80s. I grew up Pennsylvania where our costumes were ruined — ruined! — by having to wear a parka on top of our costumes. It just doesn’t feel like Halloween to me when you don’t need to put a coat on over your sexy pizza costume.

But I’m not a total… Scrooge whatever it is you call someone that’s not making a fuss over Halloween. I understand the appeal. So here are some of my favorite posts from other people — and a few from my archive — that are ghoulishly good. Enjoy!

I was looking for something to serve with my leftover pulled pork – sauerkraut – perfect.

  • noblepower says:

The photo of you bashing in the zombie’s head has me giggling – I love the two guys in the background who are completely unphased or even mildly interested in what you’re up to.

Meanwhile, I made Romanian Balls and Citrus Cauliflower Rice from WF2 last night – YUM! I put Buddha’s hand zest in instead of lemon because my lemon was looking a little worse for wear.

It was funny: When we did the photo shoot AND when we did the actual workout, no one batted an eyelash at us. Austin = weirdos.

How’d you like the Romanian balls?! I LOVE that recipe.

      • noblepower says:

The Romanian Balls = heaven. I’ve just driven ALL of my coworkers crazy by bringing them in for lunch (tossing them on lettuce and a handful of radishes with a drizzle of mayo – hey presto, insta-salad!) I used goat because one of my fav farmer’s market vendors raises goats and goes to a “boutique” abbatoir for slaughter. You guys debating what version of Burgers/Balls/Bangers to start with, give Romanian a try –

Right on! Glad you enjoyed them. I really like that one, too. It was the first recipe I finalized for that section of the cookbook!

Mel, I just had to comment about Halloween growing up. I grew up in CO and it often snowed (!) on Halloween. I remember when I was maybe 7 or so, I dressed up as a tightrope walker, which consisted of a glittery leotard, tights, and ballet slippers. I was devastated that my mom was going to make me wear a coat, so I put it on *under* my costume. I can’t even imagine what I looked like, but in my mind I was glorious 🙂

Just wanted to tell you I’ve been a fan of yours for years, and well fed is my most beat up looking cookbook. That being said, I’m getting married in ten days in the south texas heat, and paleo has been boring me lately. I got my copy of well fed 2 yesterday—I feel like a new girl! So absolutely excited I could scream! Thanks so much for making another book in which everything feel so…cookable!
Side note: Where do you buy your coarse granulated garlic? penzeys? Thanks 🙂

    • Mel says:

Thank you for reading my blog and buying the Well Fed cookbooks! I really appreciate the support. You’re nice 🙂

I’m glad WF2 got you excited about paleo. New recipes are like a fresh start. Have fun with them!

Yes! I really like Penzeys granulated garlic. It tastes really fresh to me. And there’s no added junk. Some of the grocery store brands use sunflower oil. WHY?! I don’t know.
