Well Fed 2 Preview Extravaganza

WF2_oct22

Well Fed 2: More Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat  is going to be on bookshelves in less than three weeks, people!

YAY!

I’m expecting to get my first box of books today or tomorrow, and I can’t wait to flip through the real thing. I’ve been cooking from the proof copy the printer sent us a few weeks ago, but that’s not nearly the same as the real deal. I’m also going to be sending out review copies, so you should start seeing stories about Well Fed 2 on other blogs very soon. How exciting is that?!

Now seems like a great time to start sharing some details with you. Tomorrow: a new recipe! But today, here are some of my favorite things about our new book. Don’t miss the link at the bottom to get a free 35-page preview!

Well Fed 2 Highlights

Like the original Well Fed, all of the recipes in Well Fed 2 are made with zero grains, legumes, soy, sugar, dairy, and alcohol — without sacrificing fun and flavor. Some of the recipes have made appearances here on my blog, but all of them have been re-tested and modified so that they’re as delicious as they can be — and as reliable as can be, so your results will taste like mine, and you won’t have to spend all your free time in the kitchen.

Here are some other things you should know…

Includes 200 recipes, variations, and Quick Meal ideas
This cookbook is 100 pages longer than our first! Well Fed 2 includes 110 original recipes, plus “You Know How You Could Do That” variations on almost every recipe. There are also 45 “no recipe required” “Quick Meals” ideas and plenty of “Tastes Great With” tips for turning individual dishes into multi-course meals. We kept our recipe design similar to the original Well Fed, but bumped up the size of the type — based on your feedback — so the recipes are a bit easier to follow when you’re in the midst of chopping and stirring.

WF2_thyme-braised_short_ribsI’ll be sharing this recipe with you tomorrow.

Photos & illustrations

My husband David Humphreys outdid himself on the visuals this time around! Not only are there full-page photos with every recipe, this book is packed with supporting photos and adorable illustrations. Here’s a sample to whet your appetite:

More than recipes
The book opens with info to help you manage your relationship with food, including ways to identify emotional appetite versus true hunger, 30 reasons to do a Whole30, tips for socializing while keeping good habits, and a call to action to develop the best version of yourself. Some of this stuff started here on my blog, but it’s been re-written (and re-written and re-written) to be even better.

International cuisine made healthier

I don’t like that some people still think that paleo is restrictive, so I paleo-ized  more of my favorite international recipes for delicious flavor without sacrificing good nutrition, including Deconstructed Gyro, Thai Basil Beef, Chinese Five-Spice Pork Ribs, Lemon Lamb Tagine, Tod Mun Chicken Cakes, Belly Dance Beet Salad, Garlic Creamed Spinach, Sesame Cucumber Noodles, and Banana Pecan Ice Cream. Here’s the Table of Contents so you can see all the yumminess inside. (Click to see a large version.)

WF2_TOC

Burgers, Balls & Bangers
This might be my favorite part of the cookbook: 15 recipes — inspired by international sausage flavors — that can be shaped into patties, meatballs, or sausages and grilled, baked, or pan-fried. It’s exponential meaty goodness!

AIP Adaptations

More than 100 of the recipes and Quick Meal ideas in Well Fed 2 can easily and tastily be modified to comply with the autoimmune protocol of paleo. The book includes detailed instructions for adapting the recipes for people who need to take extra care. Special thanks to Mickey Trescott of Autoimmune Paleo for helping me make sure I got all the details right. Here’s a sample of the modifications; click to see it larger.

WF2_AIP_adaptations

Whole30 Approved
Melissa and Dallas of Whole9 reviewed all of the recipes and gave me a thumbs- up for Whole30 compliance on all but two off them: the Sweet Potato “Waffle” and the Banana Pecan Ice Cream. They also graciously contributed the Foreword that opens Well Fed 2 with just the right amount of inspiration and spunk.

Tasty Terminology

In addition to plenty of how-to tips inside the recipes themselves, I included a short section this time that covers what I mean when I use standard culinary terms. I’ve been told I have an aggressive simmer (harrumph!), so the Tasty Terminology should help you feel like we’re cooking in your kitchen together.

Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves

The PDF version of the book is available for $1 to everyone who buys a printed copy; just look for the code you need in the back of your print book (page 236). Those dollars — plus $1 from every regular PDF sale — will be donated to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, an organization devoted to getting clean cooking methods into the kitchens of developing countries.
Now that all the wordy business is out of the way, let’s look at more photos of crazy-good food. Like this:

Pre-order Well Fed 2

You have helped make my dreams come true. I know that’s a corny sentence, but it’s completely sincere. My lifelong dream, since I was a little (nerdy) girl, was to be a published author and to make my living by writing. Thanks to you and your support, that’s what I do now… usually in slightly-smelly workout clothes, muttering “I need to take a shower” as I continue to type.

My next dream is to find our book on the New York Times bestseller list. It’s really hard to admit that; my ego is screaming at me right now for sharing that particular desire. But here’s the thing: You can help with that, too. First-week sales are a big deal, and if you pre-order Well Fed 2, we maybe maybe maybe might be able to make it onto the New York Times bestseller list. And I will scream a scream of joy so loud, you will all hear it, wherever you are.

Update: If you’re buying multiple copies to (a) give them to loved ones or (b) help us even more, it does us the most good if you buy eac book separately. If you buy 5 copies as 5 individual transactions, it counts as 5 sales. If you buy 5 copies all at once, it only counts as 1 sale. THANK YOU!

Thank you in advance, about a billion times.

Well Fed was my very first Paleo cookbook and is still my absolute favorite. Best recipes ever.

Chocolate Chili, from a frozen double batch, is on deck for tonight’s dinner.

Can’t wait to eat my way through Well Fed 2!

  • Natasha Lynn says:

HI! I pre-ordered! YAY! I never pre-order anything so this is pretty sweet 🙂 I can’t wait to try all the new stuff. I love that you put little spots on the recipes for notes.

On a side note *whispers very very quietly* I found a typo in the freebie. Sorry! 🙁

  • LynnD says:

Any chance you’ll be offering a digital version? I have the original in digital and LOVE IT!!
Looking forward to Well Fed 2!

  • Cat says:

I pre-ordered Well Fed 2 back in like July which feels like a gazillion years ago, but I’ve been waiting very patiently and am SO excited to get my hands on this book. It looks like you put a lot of time, effort, and love into it, and I’m just so excited.

  • Sarah says:

    If I hadn’t already pre-ordered, I’d totally pre-order it now.

  • Emily says:

I pre-ordered as soon as I knew Amazon had the option available! I seriously woke up on Oct. 1st and thought, “Yay, Well Fed 2 month!” You should see my copy of your first book…so shabby and stained, you can tell it’s a keeper! I expect no less from the follow-up!

  • Margaux says:

Just pre-ordered! Well Fed is my favorite paleo cookbook. Even my non-paleo mother in law loved my Well Fed meals so much, that she bought the cookbook herself! Can’t wait for the new one.

  • SusanB says:

Just placed my order. Cannot wait! I probably need to order another copy of the original Well Fed. It looks like I’ve actually served the meals on the recipe pages. 🙂
Thank you for sharing such delicious and “doable” recipes!

  • Jayne says:

Well Fed was the first cookbook I purchased when I decided to try Paleo. I purchased the ebook first and then bought the book. LOVE it and can’t wait to get my copy of Well Fed 2.

  • Pam says:

Love this preview!!! Can’t wait for the release, I preordered months ago.

  • Nina says:

    LOVING IIIIIIIIIIT! 🙂 Just pre-ordered 🙂 Can’t wait to add Mrs. 2 to Lady 1! 🙂

  • Melanie says:

I pre-ordered a couple of weeks ago and I’m so excited to receive well-fed 2! Well fed (1) was my first real intro to paleo cooking, and it was so informative and above all delicious. I love the concept of your cookbooks and how they are more than a collection of recipes, but show how to save time, plan ahead, adapt and be creative.

  • Lydia says:

I’d like to order a copy for myself and one for my mother, but I think the sales points only count toward best-seller-dom if they’re done as separate orders. Do you know if I’m remembering this correctly?

  • Amy in Austin says:

I am SO excited for Well Fed 2 to come out. Love your first cookbook (tonight is carnitas night and I’m making mayo today) and almost shouted in excitement when I saw it at Barnes and Noble this past weekend. Congratulations all around.

  • Tarable says:

Being a Canadian, I had to pay extra and jump through some hoops to get my copy of WellFed when it first came out. (I still have yet to see it in a Canadian book store…???) It was worth all of it though, as it quickly became my primary go-to paleo/whole30 recipe book. Now I am SUPER excited to get my hands on a copy of WellFed 2!!

  • Tarable says:

Wait! Whoa! I stand corrected! I was just able to pre-order WellFed 2 from Chapters/Indigo! And with free shipping! Woohoo! Yay Canada!

  • Catlady says:

I’ve had this on pre-order from Amazon for what seems like forever. October 22 can’t come soon enough. At least the preview will help tide me over until then. And I will definitely and gladly buy the pdf when I find out how to do it. It’s so helpful to have Well Fed with me as I travel. And your blog is terrific… Thanks for your inspiration.

  • MC says:

OMG, so excited. I just pre-ordered!

The international section is genius. It’s really hard to find those types of dishes made without sugar. I’m looking forward to trying them all!

  • Christian says:

Just pre-ordered and will probably get a copy for my sister as well. Thank you for all the work and effort you put into this! Even when I slip and am not eating Paleo these recipes are my go-to and a big hit with family and friends.

You’ve also inspired me to try more lamb and experiment with it, loving it! Now, if you could come up with a Paleo friendly option to curried Israeli cous-cous I would be a happy happy camper!

Congrats on your success and hope to see you on the best seller list!

  • Maria says:

I think that you’re amazing, and I’m so excited about this book. Thank you so much for writing it!

  • Emily T. says:

I love Well Fed and cannot wait for Well Fed 2! I love that everything is so attainable and that the recipes and ideas keep my non-Paleo (but supportive) boyfriend happy and asking for seconds!

  • Sara says:

Preordered a long time ago, really looking forward to no 2! Will try to spread the good word about your books in Norway 🙂

  • Mike T. says:

I have to say that I have learned so much from Well Fed!!
I have implemented WOD for quick meals and the Super Snack packs that I look forward to every day.

I don’t think I’ve cooked out of one cook book as much as yours.
“You know how you could do that?” has opened up the doors of creation. I’ve made Mayo every week and my dressings have gone to a new level.

Tonight is Pad Thai – Can’t wait!!

I preordered Well Fed #2 today and this time I’m getting the book and the PDF.

Here’s to the New York Times bestseller list!

    Great Job!!

  • Alison says:

I pre-ordered after your first announcement months ago. I am looking forward to it. Hello to smudge! haha

  • Krista says:

Just pre-ordered! Can’t wait to start cooking with it!

  • Angela Bednarek says:

I am so excited about Well Fed 2. I love Well Fed and is falling apart due to how much I use it. Thank you for the preview.

  • Emma says:

So excited!!!!!!!!!! The original Well Fed is my go-to paleo cookbook, as evidenced by the food stains all over it 🙂

  • Frances says:

8 weeks in to our second attempt at Paleo and since finding your it’s been a breeze – I love Well Fed, plan my weekly menu using the recipe index and can’t wait for Well Fed 2. Thank you for bringing joy to my kitchen (and table). I was so excited when I found coconut aminos at my local health food store and I really appreciate the blends you give for those of us who can’t order Penzeys…

  • David says:

Thanks for the sneak peek! I pre-ordered Well Fed 2 the first day it was available on Amazon, and now, looking at the contents, I’m even more excited.

Unfortunately, I did find a small typo in the preview. In the bio of Smudge on page 239, I think you meant to say 2011, rather than 2001.

It’s still going to be an awesome book, and I can’t wait to get it! Thanks for all the hard work that you’ve put into this!

  • Jenny Nagel says:

Gurrrrl, you had me at “meat sauce”.

  • Denise says:

    I can’t even. I’m so fucking excited.

  • Diana says:

Omg I can’t wait for bangers and balls. I love the different meatballs! I make batches of them and keep them in the freezer in a gallon bag, and then take out a bunch in a container, fill another container with frozen veg and some butter/ghee, and I have an emergency lunch, ready to go! Seriously so excited for Oct 22, it’s gonna get me through my last week of whole30 🙂

  • Casey says:

Preordered! It should arrive in the week before my birthday! Happy Birthday to me!

  • I am SO excited for this book to come out. Well Fed STILL is my favorite Paleo cookbook and every time I look at it I get renewed motivation. I also now seem to get feelings of nostalgia too “ah, remember back when I first got this book and it made me really want to go Paleo and cook everything in the book?”. Thanks for it all Mel!

  • Nicole says:

I am so freaking excited for this book. I just made your Cinnamon Beef Stew tonight and it tastes even better than I remember (which is saying something). I even made my roommate try it and she couldn’t believe it was “paleo”. I love how simple your recipes and ingredients are, as well. You rock!

  • Mel says:

You guys are AWESOME to be so enthusiastic about Well Fed 2. THANK YOU!

We’re beyond excited to get this book into your hands, and I’m really touched by the affection so many of you have for the original Well Fed. I feel that way about it, too, and it’s just lovely to know you guys have a little crush on it, too.

Happy cooking! Won’t be long now. WOOT!

  • kellyann says:

Beyond excited for this one Mel!

  • Sallie says:

    I pre-ordered! My mouth is watering already…

  • Casey says:

I just got an email from Amazon letting me know that they anticipate my pre-ordered copy of Well Fed 2 will be delivered THIS SATURDAY the 19th! I could be cooking from Well Fed 2 THIS WEEKEND! I am giddy with excitement.

  • Candi says:

How do you get the $1 PDF copy on top of the hard copy? Do you have to buy it on Amazon to get this deal? I’m in New Zealand – but I want both!! 🙂
