Heads Up: New Primal Books

I don’t remember which movie it was that introduced me to the phrase “Use your words.” but I thought it was hilarious because (1) I adore playing with words and (2) snarky posts like this and this are both and enthralling and guilt-producing. (How dare I be so judgmental when I, too, am so imperfect?!)

So, let’s get specific about words for a bit.

What follows are not reviews of these books, i.e., I’m not providing a concise overview of their merits and foibles because I haven’t read them cover to cover. (If I don’t concentrate on finishing my book right now, there will be Hell to pay.) The information below is more like, “Heads up, friend! These primal-focused books are available and might be interesting to you.”

Primal Moms Look Good Naked: A Mother’s Guide to Achieving Beauty Through Excellent Health

What It’s About
Peggy is the author of the blog The Primal Parent. Her new book Primal Moms Look Good Naked is a “complete guide for women seeking a healthy pregnancy and baby. It includes fertility strategies, a full nutritional guide, and an exercise program suitable for women of all athletic abilities.”

Paleo Fitness: Primal Training and Nutrition to Get Lean, Strong, and Healthy

What It’s About
Darryl is the author of the web site The Fitness Explorer, where he shares workouts and success stories from his primal/natural movement training business (including this kickass list of exercises and how-to instructions). This book explains his approach to fitness training — “work out in the real world, for the real world” — along with a basic intro to eating paleo.

Defining Quote from the Book
We need to be reintroduced to the basic movement patterns that go us here, rather than focusing on the highly skilled forms of activity that are typical of modern exercises. Instead of seeking out punishing workouts that will get our bodies into shape, we should also focus on general movement that will give us joy and pleasure. A step in the right direction is to enjoy what we can do functionally and practically when fit rather than hating what we have to do to get fit.

What’s Inside
It’s a tidy handbook on the basics of eating and working out, paleo style. After a quick intro to paleo eating, it jumps right into a comprehensive primal training program based on balancing paleo circuits, high-intensity tabata training, walking, strength, and relaxation. The movements include fun and effective stuff that can feel like play, including  backward bunny hop, crab walk, pushups, jump rope, and burpees. All of the exercises are illustrated with how-to photos, and the training plan is easy to understand. The appendix includes some paleo recipes and handy guidelines for taking and tracking measurements and other progress markers.
