Rants & Raves 6/30/13

Oh, the webbernet! It gets me all riled up with dire news and mainstream idiocy, then blammo! it hits me with something so awesome, it must be shared. Welcome to a new collection of Rants & Raves!

Rants

The only thing I really have to rant about right now is this:

weather

As predicted, our temperatures really did reach 106 both Friday and yesterday. I cannot find the words to accurately describe how utterly loathsome it is to be in the air conditioning all day and night — and how equally loathsome it is to be outside. Summer: really not my thing.

I’ve watched this video so many times to try to get in the spirit, but it just makes me feel bitter that my summer is nothing like Beefy’s!

Let’s get to the good stuff!

Raves

Craptastically craptastic!
I affectionately refer to my much-loved South Austin Gym as the craptastic because it really used to be pretty crappy. It’s quite nice now; it moved to a new location that’s airy, clean, and well-stocked with barbells, free weights, kettlebells, and all manner of doodads to make a workout exciting. But the photos from the Buzzfeed piece “Your Gym is Punk-Ass Compared to This One” make me a little envious. I totally want to workout there.

Take it slow. We’ve all heard the conventional wisdom that it takes 20 minutes for our brains to register that we’re full. This article from the Institute for the Psychology of Eating explores how slowing down while we eat can improve digestion, our hormonal response to food, and weight management.

If you’re interested in the emotional and psychological aspects of eating, you might want to also check out the free online conference Eating Psychology with Marc David, August 5-9. Marc David, the founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, will be interviewing 30 “cutting edge experts in eating psychology, embodiment, weight, health, and nutrition.” Get your free ticket here!

I <3 Naomi Alderman.

Naomi Alderman is an award-winning novelist and the writer behind the thoroughly engaging story that makes the Zombies, Run! app so special. In this interview with Den of Geek! she shares the inspiration for Zombies, Run!, insight into her writing process, and the emotional side of working out. (Make your summer more fun with Zombies, Run! Read my review of the app — plus my running playlist.)

Steak and onions.
Like onions but don’t like their bite? The Kitchn has the secret for keeping the sass of the onion without the burn. And since you might be celebrating summer by grilling a big hunk o’ steak, dig into these 7 Old Wives’ Tales About Cooking Steak That Need To Go Away.

Get ChipperFit!

Sometimes all you need for a workout boost is something new to wear. CrossFitter Jeanelle Demers just launched her Etsy store ChipperFit with these cute tanks that let everyone know you’re ready to get down with the barbells. Available in both tank and t-shirt styles, and multiple colors, I’m pretty sure these tops can help you get a PR. (And they’d look really cute with some Well Fed socks!)

It’s never too soon to pre-order!

I’m not sure if I’m more excited about Well Fed 2 (hitting stores on October 22) or the December release of Nom Nom Paleo’s cookbook Food For Humans. My list of favorite cooks and recipe creators goes like this:

1. Mom and Dad, tie
2. Me!
3. Nom Nom Paleo
4. Everyone else

Happily, although you can’t get our books right now, you can pre-order on Amazon, so you’ll have them in your kitchen as soon as they’re released. Why no pre-order Nom Nom Paleo: Food For Humans — and Well Fed 2: More Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat!

A Final Thought…

The fabulous Kathleen Shannon shared this on her blog a few days ago, and I loved it so much, I wanted to make sure you saw it. It’s a short monologue from Neil DeGrasse Tyson called “Your Ego and the Comic Perspective.”

“When I look up in the universe, I know I’m small. But I’m also big. I’m big because I’m connected to the universe and the universe is connected to me.”

Number 15 in the Ukrainian Gym link made my weekend. It was nice to be in the 90s today compared with 106 yesterday! Yay, rain!

  • Stompy says:

Both books are pre-ordered! I’m so excited (and impatient).

  • GrannyMumantoog says:

My favorite astrophysicist! @neiltyson is lots of fun on twitter too! As for the others…I think I’ll skip that gym & go strait for the steak & onions! Stay cool!

  • Amy Ayers says:

I just pre-ordered BOTH books. SO excited!!

  • Nina says:

I preordered both, Nom Nom Paleo AND Well Fed2, plus about 5 others 😀 I have to have them all, paleo cookbooks 🙂 Now awaiting Gather and OMG, That’s Paleo? with a lot more on the way :))) Can’t wait to see Well Fed2, as her older sister was my very first paleo cookbook so it has a special place in my shelf (and my heart) :))

  • pamela says:

I loved that post on steak myths. Your Rants and Raves has long been one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing.

  • Laura says:

Preordered both books! My ranking of Paleo cooks is similar, and looks like this:

    1. You and Michelle from Nom Nom Paleo (tie)
    2. Everyone else

Honestly, you two are heads and shoulders above the rest because you truly know good food AND show integrity and respect for your followers, rather than dangling “Paleofied” sugary treats to drive blog traffic at the expense of readers’ health. Also, the two of you write like pros: your posts are witty, humorous, and polished.

We are all so lucky to have you and Michelle as leading voices in the Paleo foodie community. No one else compares!

    Okay. Enough ass-kissing for today…

    • Mel says:

Thank you SO MUCH for this lovely compliment! It’s hard sometimes being the “stick in them mud” that doesn’t make any paleo desserts, so I really appreciate that you like what I’m trying to do. YAY!

      Truly… thank you.

  • Andrea says:

I have pre-ordered both books and can’t wait either! Whenever anyone asks me about Paleo I give them both of your websites! My Well Fed is well worn and cannot wait to have a pair!
I am off to nice cool England in a few days (where my sister-in-laws will be proclaiming its red hot in the 70’s!). Looking forward to being as Paleo as possible there! (I will be counting cider as apples!)

    • Mel says:

Thanks so much for pre-ordering… hooray! And thanks, too, for referring people to my site!

Happy travels to you! I hope you have a wonderful time, and I’m 99% sure that cider counts as a fruit 😉

  • JennF says:

Melissa, I just got this shirt from shirt.woot! and I thought of you – you are the one who turned me on to Zombies, run! in the first place.

Plus they have a whole bunch of other nerdy t-shirt designs, too 🙂
