Our New Project: Strong Sense of Place
My new project is taking all of my attention right now, and I'd love for you to join me for new adventures! It's called Strong...
Read MoreEach of these thoughts really deserves its own blog post but between the photo planning and grocery shopping and cooking and dish washing (oh, my! the dish washing) and the annoying habit of wanting to sleep and eat and workout, I can’t produce a bunch of well -written blog posts, so this will have to do.
Which is a very long-winded way to say: I’m so grateful for all of you and the gift of working on Well Fed 2. I can’t wait to share these new recipes with you. When Dave and I are frustrated with the photography process, we visualize your happy faces as you snarf (SNARF!) delicious dino-chow into your well-deserving mouths. It helps a ton.
Now… Thursday thoughts…
PaleoFX!
The 2nd annual PaleoFX: Ancestral Momentum – Theory to Practice Symposium is happening in Austin, March 28-30. This year’s speakers include big brains like Robb Wolf, Sarah Fragoso, Nora Gedgaudas, Chris Kresser, Dr. Emily Deans, plus foodies like Michelle Tam and me!
The presentations should be badass, of course, but more importantly: if you come to PaleoFX we can hang out and visit! And eat. Together. So, yeah. Think about that.
Here’s the official word on the street:
The symposium will focus on the cutting-edge of nutrition, movement, human health, sustainability and ancestral well-being. In addition to presentations and Mastermind Discussions, there will also be top strength and movement coaches as well as paleo food bloggers giving hands-on demonstrations. The symposium is intended for laypersons and professionals alike.
Tickets are now on sale. Get ’em at www.therealpaleofx.com and visit
My morning soup
I’ve been eating Silky Gingered Zucchini Soup for breakfast since I made up the recipe, but with the mayhem lately, I didn’t make a batch this week. And it feels all wrong. I just poured a double batch out of the blender. Equilibrium is restored. (If you haven’t tried this soup yet, I really think you should.)
I’m tired!
Confession: I didn’t brush my teeth today, and I’m still wearing my pajamas. It’s 2:54 p.m. (However, I did flat-iron my hair; I’m not an animal.) I feel like I have a hangover, but I haven’t had any adult beverages since Christmas. I blame it on yesterday:
7:30 a.m. – 3.5-mile run
9:30 a.m. – Grocery shopping for photo shoot
11:00 a.m. – Start cooking for photo shoot
1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Cooking, photos, dish washing, repeat, repeat, repeat
4:45 p.m. – Panicked shower (I’m late! I’m late! I’m late!)
5:30 p.m. – Crazed drive to Whole Foods (I’m late! I’m late! I’m late!… I wasn’t late after all.)
6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. – Lead hands-on class
11:00 p.m. – Collapse with headache from Hell
On the up side, the people in my class were ridiculously fun and good cooks, so I think it went really well.
And there’s this:
Our first five recipe shots for Well Fed 2 are done!
The West Wing
I remembered that Dave and I watched The West Wing when it was on TV, and I recalled that I liked it, but… we’ve been watching back-to-back (to-back) episodes on Netflix, and I cannot get enough. We just finished watching the tear-jerker, first two episodes of season 2. I like to pretend that CJ, Josh, Sam, Toby, President Bartlett, Charlie, and Leo (oh, Leo!) are my friends. Don’t judge me. I’m tired.
My new project is taking all of my attention right now, and I'd love for you to join me for new adventures! It's called Strong...

I’m just watching West Wing for the first time! I’m halfway through season 5. I love all of them! So much so I follow their fake accounts on Twitter.
*hangs head in shame*
My fiance and I started watching West Wing on New Year’s Eve. We watched seven episodes that night (wild New Year’s fun, I know!). He’s now hooked too! I think it’s kind of telling how relevant some of the story lines still are today.
Neat to see the pictures for your upcoming book. So excited for you!
Hurry the frick up with that cookbook. People are waiting. Aaaaaggghhh!!!! 🙂
Also I’ve been reading the Jack Reacher books. Yay for that. And the movie was pretty decent.
My book recommendation for you:
“I Capture the Castle.”
Are those NACHOS!?! For some reason, I’ve been craving nachos during my Whole30. I don’t normally eat nachos… My mom is having the same craving, and mentioned it to be before I ever said anything. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree I suppose.
Also, I didn’t know you did classes at Whole Foods! Was it a one-time thing or will there be another? I’d love to attend.
Is that paleo ketchup? I’m pretty excited about that.
I’ve also been watching the West Wing on netflix and I feel the same way. Just last night I found myself thinking about how much I just love the Bartlets, as though they are real people that I really know.
Also, the idea of visiting Austin and eating and hanging out with you is SUPER tempting….
Actually the cast reunited for a politcal ad this past election, very well done, still the same ole, same ole….(as she waxes nostaligic….)

Eeeek! I can’t wait for Well Fed 2! I wasn’t able to take part in the survey, but I would like to say that I cook for a family of 5, so if your recipes were for 4 (I have 3 kids) or 4-6 it would be super helpful. It seems like a lot of paleo bloggers are cooking for 2 and their recipes reflect it.
Second, we just started watching West Wing last night and we are HOOKED! Since Downton Abbey (season 2) is only on DVD, we can get caught up on WW. Why did we wait so long?!
Last, I had to say how much I love your book, Well Fed. The photos are beautiful and the recipes make even a kitchen-dunce like me feel like I can cook. I love the alternatives to each recipe you include, too. So helpful! Please keep the same format for your next book. It is my new favorite.
Can’t wait for the new cookbook!
And, hey, TV friends are perfectly acceptable! My (real) friends and I even have different TV boyfriends at times. And if you’re looking for another show to get hooked on after West Wing, I think you would love Supernatural! It starts out a little slow, but the character arcs are magnificent.
Your blog really ties the room together, Mel.
Yes, i think that really is ketchup!!!! I still haven’t gotten over the mayo awesomeness. Be still my heart. Please hurry
It was great meeting you last night! What an awesome class! You made it ridiculously fun. I’m ready for another class, but will settle for Well Fed 2.
We all need recovery days. At least you can eat all your yummy photo shoot food.
ketchup <3
West Wing? Best. Show. Ever. I can’t count how many times I’ve watched the first 5 or 6 seasons. There used to be an episode on Bravo every evening and I would DVR them and then lay on the couch after my weekend long run and watch them back-to-back. And now that they’re on Netflix, look out! First two episodes of season 2 still make me cry.
I love, love, love Well Fed! Please hurry with #2. My husband has been raving about the chocolate chili all week. Your recipes are making paleo a relatively painless conversion – thank you!!!
I have my ticket for PaleoFX and I’m so excited. I’m a bit disappointed that Mark Sisson isn’t going to be there- I think I have a bit of a crush on him.
I’m so excited about Well Fed 2! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, in whatever form. I’m thinking that you should put the book Gilead by Marilynn Robinson on your to-read list if you haven’t read it already. I’m by far not the first to praise it, but I will say that reading it has blessed my life.
I wish I could make it to PaleoFX! Last year I told myself, “I’ll go in 2013,” and now I’m saying, “2014, for sure.” A girl’s gotta dream… Can’t wait for the new book! Congrats again on all the awesome happs 🙂
Is that Ketchup?????YEA!!! Can’t wait!
The West Wing has been one of my favorites since it first came out. I could watch backtobackto back also. From the Earth to the Moon and Band of Brothers, both from HBO, are also really good.
I’ve never watched West Wing so don’t have much I can say about that. I can say that I’ve been giving PaleoFX some serious consideration, and I can further say that I’m making some of that soup this weekend.
Mmm….those pics of food look great! Can’t wait to chow down on these yummy looking items!
My hubs and I are avid The West Wing fans, and have also been watching way too many episodes lately since it’s streaming on Netflix!
Forgive me for responding to you in bulk. I’m typing as I also shove beef stew (the stew in the photo above!) into my mouth between photography tasks.
West Wing! I watched four episodes yesterday. I have a problem.
Jack Reacher movie. Only OK in my opinion. B-. LOVED the fight scenes.
I read I Capture the Castle and enjoyed it so much, I gave a copy to my niece. Such a sweet book.
Yes, those are nachos. Get psyched.
And yes, that’s ketchup. Get psyched again. Both are crazy good and so very easy to make.
I’m teaching at Whole Foods again in February, but it’s sold out already. (yay and sorry!). I’m not teaching again until the summer. Will let you all know when the classes are announced.
Thanks for the enthusiasm for Well Fed 2 and the support of Well Fed. Makes me so happy!
I, too, am bummed we won’t see The Sisson at PaleoFX — but it’s still gonna be fun!
OMG! I LOVE the West Wing. I have at least one season on DVD. WW and LA Law are two of my all-time TV favorites. That’s when TV was GOOD! Now? Not so much.
It’s a new month (already). Hope your 2013 is off to a great start!
Congrats on the WholeFoods cooking class. We have a store opening soon in my area (about damn time!).
🙂
