Well Fed 2 Survey

question-mark

If you can spare, like, two minutes, we would really appreciate your feedback on a little survey. It’s only two questions — and if you answer it, you could win a copy of Well Fed and a pair of Well Fed knee socks. We’re picking your brains about binding preferences and recipe volume for Well Fed 2: More Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat (scheduled to hit the world in October 2013).. Easy-peasy!

Took the survey. Since there was no place in the survey to comment, just thought I’d clarify one of my answers. 1st, let me say that I LOVE Well Fed…Excited to hear you’re doing a 2nd one…I’ve told so many people about your 1st book! In the survey you asked about binding – thank you for considering other options…my Well Fed was in pieces after only a week of use…not sure if I just got one with really bad binding or if many people had this challenge, hence your question. ??? I continue to gather all the loose pages together being careful not to loose any & use it over & over again…many of my families favorite meals come from your book!! :o) So, this is the reason I put that binding choice last. Thanks & again, REALLY looking forward to your new book!

As I said in my other post today, we had some problems early on, then switched to a different printer and sold more than 25,000 copies with no issues… then this last batch, a ton of them came apart. The printer has never had this happen before; they think it was bad glue (!). Anyway… you can have a spiral binding put on your book at Kinko’s or another copy shop for about $3-5. Yu might want to try that! 🙂

      • Mel says:

Also, THANK YOU THANK YOU for your kind words about Well Fed and for sharing the love. I really appreciate it!

      • Elizabeth says:

I nearly just cried (currently suffering from a lil hormone poisoning)! I just got your book today, absolutely love and needed the ideas at this point in my life. I glanced through once and got up to make a recipe and 1/2 my pages fell out with the others hanging on by a thread! I love love books (I know I don’t have to go to details about this with you) but it makes me feel so good that it wasn’t just my book, like bad karma directed to me. Hate that so many had the same thing happen. Will look at getting it spiral bond. I loved its simplicity in style though! Girl keep cranking it all out your amazing and if I happen to catch anymore cooking demos I am signin up!

        • Mel says:

I’m really sorry your book fell apart! I can’t tell you how horrible it’s been this week to get emails and reviews about pages falling out. I want to bash my head into the desk. Hold on a sec…

          [bash bash bash]

          OK!I’m back.

You can return your bum book to amazon for a replacement, and I think they give you free shipping. Just sayin’…

  • Gretchen says:

I just finished the survey and am torn on question 2 so I wanted to clarify, or be wishy-washy. I voted for 2 lbs of meat. I feed a family with 3 close-to-being-teenagers. I need a lot of food. However, I can easily double (or triple). I would worry that using 2 lbs of meat could turn off your audience of singles, young couples and those on a tight budget. I’m sure these are your concerns too. Any way to include both???

    • Mel says:

I used all 2 pound recipes in Well Fed, but I thought I’d ask just in case… we’ll see what the survey says.

      • Carla says:

I need to change my answer on that one. Gretchen’s right. It’s easier for me to multiply (I’m used to it, with six adults to feed) than it is for a beginner cook to divide.

    • Callista says:

I’m just one person, so I chose 1lb, because it’s really simple for me, and you know, I still have leftovers. Dinner and breakfast or lunch the next day.

      • Violette says:

Another household of one who chose 1 lb. I can do math, so it’s not a deal breaker if Melissa goes with 2. I’m also a big girl who doesn’t need cookbook authors to validate my life choices.

        But it doesn’t hurt.

  • C says:

Yours is the best paleo type recipe book hands down. I have bought a few others, but they just don’t seem to have a voice giving me a glimpse of WHO the author is, or recipes as well thought out as yours in my opinion. Nom Nom would be my second pick, but the use of the water oven so often is a turn off, but she too has a great personality.

My book fell apart the day I bought it when it was first released, but I couldn’t stand to part with it, I liked it so much! Can’t wait for your next book!

    • Mel says:

Oh! Thank you so much! I’m glad you like the writing… I really enjoyed putting those stories onto the page, and I’m thrilled you like them.

      Sorry your book came apart!

  • Michelle says:

I just wanted to mention that I LOVED having the option to buy the eBook version for a small fee with the purchase of the paper book. I love having this resource with me on my phone and Kindle, and I have found it easiest to use the recipes we love most when I print the recipes and hang them above my prep space.

  • Jessica Martinez-Milligan says:

Done! I am much like others who have told or mentioned your book in a NUMBER of cases to a lot of people. (Spreading the love!!) The bora bora meatballs are my favorite! Your book has been quite used by most of the gals in my box this month who are doing a Whole30 challenge and the love of your recipes is quite strong. And I proudly wear my well fed bracelet daily..as a reminder. Can’t wait for Well Fed 2!

    • Mel says:

Thank you for telling your people about Well Fed — really appreciate it! Hooray for Whole30-ing! And thanks for getting a bracelet — love that!

  • LOVE Well Fed, and my copy is still glued together brilliantly. 🙂 Looking forward to NUMERO DOS.

  • Merri says:

Love.LOVE.love eating my way through winter with “Well Fed”. My family is raving over the food that is coming out of my kitchen! Here’s what I would really love to have in my Paleo toolkit….I would love for this next book to have an app or online component (fee based) that would work like a Paleo/Primal version of “Dinner Spinner” from allrecepies.com. Somewhere I could go,type in what I’ve got on hand and BOOM, I’ve got you right here, telling me “you know you could do that?” So glad I chose your cookbook, it has been a real treat! Look forward to book deux!

    • Mel says:

That’s a great idea, so sorry to disappoint! I spent 15 years working in technology, and I’m done, baby, done! making interactive stuff. I’m all about books now. Sorry!

But I’m glad you like Well Fed… YAY!

  • Kristina says:

    All done!

I love Well Fed and use it all the time, so I just wanted to say thank you for being so awesome! Can’t wait until book number two comes out. 🙂

  • Katharine says:

I love Well Fed! Looking forward to the next. I have a comment I’ve been meaning to pass along about type size — there are lots of fun remarks in decent size type but then the directions for the recipes themselves are tiny! It’s a little challenging for those of us with aging eyes. Especially when we’ve forgotten that our readers are on top of our heads.;)

    • Mel says:

Thanks for the feedback! We did a HUGE survey a few months ago on Well Fed before we started production on Well Fed 2, and we’re re-working the design to allow for larger font sizes.

  • Patricia says:

I LOVE Well Fed! Chocolate Chili and Cinnamon Beef are two of my fave go-to recipes. I want to cook my way through the book “Julie & Julia” style! I think “Melissa & Patricia” has a ring to it!

  • Roz says:

Took the survey, and wanted to make an observation about 1 vs 2 lbs of meat. I find it a lot easier to double a recipe than halve, in case I’m on auto-pilot and forget to halve the spices. It’s a *lot* easier to boost a dish midway through cooking after a sample, than to try to dilute pungency or heat (double cayenne or habanero relative to meat? OUCH!)

  • Shanna K says:

I really like the 2lb idea. The hubby and I have kind of figured out for us that overall 1 1/2 to 2 generally is perfect for dinner for two and lunches for two for the next day. If a recipe calls for more we leave the same amount of veggies and do our own meat amount and same if it calls for less, we just increase everything. The 2 lbs gives me a better idea of how to do it for just us. And we loooove having leftovers for lunch the next day. It’s the only way we get by. Super stoked for Well Fed 2! Cheers! -Shanna K

  • DM says:

Really, really looking forward to Well Fed 2!

I’ll throw my 2 cents of wishlist in here, too – I would love a few very specific “mini” cook up “menus” that would get you through maybe like 3-5 days. So like make recipes A-D, then combine them in these sample combo’s for a few days of meals. I guess this would sort of be like an expanded hot plates, just with written out instructions.

    Yes, I am completely non-creative 🙂

I totally love the idea of the weekly cook up but often have an execution fail at getting enough food together to last me more than 2-3 days & keep the eating not boring!

  • Jessie says:

I didn’t respond on the survey because I have no opinion on binding, as I am all about the eBook. However, I do want to mention something about recipe volume: I like to know what size pot or pan to use, and sometimes that can be tricky when doubling a recipe. If you do decide to go with 1-lb. recipes, a note saying “if you double the recipe, you’ll need a Dutch oven rather than a skillet” or something along those lines would be much appreciated! I have terrible spatial reasoning skills. 🙂 Anyway, I love your recipes and am so excited for Well Fed 2!

  • Stompy says:

Just wanted to say, I voted for spiral binding, but I loved paying the bit extra to be able to print out the recipe pages. I put them in page protectors so when I have them layed out for cooking & spill all over them (every time), I can just wipe it off. So, if my well fed 2 falls apart, I’ll manage (& cook awesome food every single werkend).

  • Ellen says:

I put one pound of meat only because that is how I have it packaged. I would like meat alternatives or descriptions. I just got 1/4 of beef and am splitting a hog with 2 of my sons, but I don’t always have the exact cut a recipe calls for. For instance: If the recipe calls for flank steak; we had the flank and skirt steaks cut into “fajita strips” for stir fry. It would be nice to know if round roast would be an acceptable substitution, or sirloin steak, or???

  • Lucy Hindle says:

Can’t wait for the new book to come out- Well Fed is amazing, thank you. We don’t get Sunbutter in south africa, so I finally got around to making some, and then making sunshine sauce. Seriously- one of the yummiest dips. Now I just need to do something with the extra sunbutter so that I stop snacking on it!

  • Joanne Goldstein says:

I love your cookbook, recipes on your website, and your blog! This was one of the best discoveries when I did Whole30 and turned paleo. My husband has been looking over your site and cookbook is excited to start cooking. My son says this is the best diet I’ve done in a long time because he thoroughly enjoys what I’m cooking. I’m looking forward to Well Fed 2. Thanks again for all your hard work!

  • Ehsa says:

I have both the paperback (binding is ok so far, although I don’t think I’d describe it as “lay flat”)and the Kindle edition which is spectacularly beautiful on my iPad (the photography really pops!). I hope you won’t neglect the Kindle version for Well Fed 2.

  • Tara says:

Well Fed has completely changed the wzy we cook, shop, meal plan, and eat! Every dish we have made looks exactly like the photos and the preparation times listed are very accurate. Thank you for the heart and soul you lovingly put into each recipe.

  • Rae Langsdale says:

I love Well Fed. Can’t wait for the next one to come out. I have had no trouble with the book coming unglued and I also have the e-book from the Toadally Primal Wellness Bundle. I vote for larger font size and 2 lbs of meat. I love leftovers!

Your book has been such an inspiration for a person who did not have much experience cooking until she went paleo. Your advice has been invaluable to me: the Weekly Cookup, Hot Plates, homemade mayo and ghee. My favorite recipe is Cinnamon Beef Stew. I love the spices! I had to buy a special rack to hold them all. I had next to nothing when I started. Thank you so much!!

  • Kirsten says:

I just got Well Fed as part of a paleo/primal e-book bundle. It is the best cook book I’ve ever had. I started a grain-free diet 11 days ago and this cook book has made the transition so easy. So far I’ve made the Chinese BBQ pork and the corresponding fried “rice” and everyone in the family loved it. My dad (who is not terribly accepting of the diet change) asked me what I did to make cauliflower taste like rice.

I adore ethnic foods and I love that so many of your recipes make ethnic food simple and accessable, and turn out so great. I’m trying the Citrus Carnitas tonight!

I can’t wait for Well Fed 2, I will be keeping an eye out for it!

  • Lee Anne P says:

I also got your book in the paleo e-book bundle, and it alone was worth the price, hands down. I’m on a restricted diet for food sensitivity testing for the next two months and I don’t like to cook. I’ve been having a ball with your book for the past week, buying all sorts of weird and wild ingredients that I’ve never heard of before (e.g. coconut aminos). I’ll definitely be buying volume two.

  • Jessica S says:

I will buy Wellfed 2 no matter how its bound, no matter how many servings per batch. The original was JUST THAT GOOD! So glad it will be Whole 30 compliant. Makes life easier (and yummier) for those doing Whole 30 for 30 days, 60 days, or trying to make a lifestyle of it!

  • Stephanie says:

One of my favorite things about Well Fed is the two pound recipes. I love having enough of a meal for dinner and lunch the next day. When I get a recipe online that is only one pound I *always* double it.

  • Suellen says:

Are you considering a Ebola version rather than just the PDF for us ipad users? It would make it easier to navigate and use in the kitchen

  • Rebecca says:

I am a huge fan of the two pound meat recipes! I have a family of 6 and that is always plenty for dinner and leftovers for my lunch the next day. As much as I love to cook, I don’t want to be in the kitchen all the time, so I do planned leftovers.

My book is still intact, and can I just say? I LOVE the smell of the book (weird, I know, but I’m a sniffer). I don’t know if it’s the ink or the paper that was used or a combination of the two, but just sniffing that book makes me hungry. 🙂

CAN”T WAIT until Well Fed 2! Keep the fantastic recipes coming!

  • Kay says:

My book was great with no issues and i use it a lot! Cant wait for the next one!!!

  • Kris says:

I can’t thank you enough for Well Fed! Between you and Nom Nom I can now cook great meals! My husband is soooo happy!! I am a vegetarian and I love that you offer so many great veggie dishes. My husband is a meat eater and raves about all the dishes. I love the suggestion a previous poster had about meat cuts substitutions. I personally would love if you had something on the different cuts of meats and if that cut is sometimes also called something else at the market. even if you just blogged about it it would be great (with photos of course)! I know I know but hey you created a monster! My husband is anxiously awaiting more and more dishes! Sometimes when I am in the store I can’t find what the recipe calls for in a particular meat cut and I am clueless about what I could substitute. Thanks again! I Am so looking forward to the new book! I have given many as gifts and you have become everyone’s favorite!

  • Cyndi says:

Hey there! My vote is for 1 pound recipes. It’s easier to double than divide =)

  • Marianne says:

    Hi there,
I have been cooking from Well Fed (in France!) for the last couple of weeks and I love it. One comment I have is that I have found the graphic design a bit “all over the place” and that the typeface for the directions are a bit on the small side. I know you want to get all the info on one page, but there’s almost too much to read. Perhaps only having a 1/2 page lovely photo, with the text starting under it? I like all the extra comments you give, but they kind of clutter up the page. Can’t wait for the next one!
