Five Minutes of Heaven

I don't know anything about this movie, but I thought the title was apt and the poster is badass.

The countdown to Prague departure time is SO on! Today was my second-to-last CrossFit Austin workout, and it was a barn-burner. Dang! It’s been a while since a WOD written on the whiteboard made me nervous. Sure, there have been workouts lately that I knew were going to be a long grind, but this one gave me little flutters in my tummy when I read it. Intimidating!

It totally lived up to expectations.

Skills
clean warmup

WOD
5 rounds: every 5 minutes complete the following (then rest ’til the 5:00 mark):
400m sprint
3 cleans, 55#
5 knees-to-elbows
7 pushups

My times: 2:58 – 3:07 – 3:13 – 3:26 – 3:26

During our pre-WOD instructions, Coach Walker reminded us that the 400m were supposed to be sprints. “I’m looking for intent here,” she said. “On later rounds, it’s going to be hard to go fast, but I want you to be thinking about sprinting and push.” The goal was to go hard on the work – as fast as possible – so we could rest before the next 5-minute interval.

I tried to hustle, but I watched my running intervals get slightly longer each time. My first was a badass-for-me 1:53; my last 400m took 2:05. That made me sad.

On the first three rounds, I babied my shoulder and did pushups on my knees, but my should felt fine and my ego was suffering, so I did chest-to-deck pushups on my toes for the last two rounds. Some of them maybe didn’t make it all the way down to the mat, but it’s great to feel only weakness and not pain in that right shoulder. My pushups are on their way back, friends!

*If you’re now curious about Five Minutes of Heaven, here’s its IMDB page and a trailer. It looks pretty grim, but Liam Nesson has that wonderfully craggy-handsome face and accent, so that’s something.

  • Oh the Airdyne kicked my ass. By round 4, I was nauseous and exhausted. I should have added some weight to my cleans, but I did drop it likes it’s hot. Yay for depth! (Of my squats, if not my character).

Your times are awesome. You killed it.

  • Mel says:

I can’t imagine doing that thing on the Airdyne. Yowza!

So glad I got see you this morning! I’m going to try to get to strength class tomorrow. All of my packing is done, but we’ll be out late tonight. However… being tired tomorrow would be a good thing so I might sleep on the plane.

  • ***fingers crossed** I totally hope you can come! Have fun tonight!

  • Tom R. says:

Nice work. Be sure and keep up with your shoulder rehab while on the road.

    • Mel says:

Absolutely! Lacrosse ball and band are in my suitcase, and I threw an extra band into my purse to amuse myself for the hours we’re in the Dallas and Paris airports. YAY!
