The Well Fed Cover

About a month ago, I announced the title of my upcoming cookbook

Well Fed: Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat

I also shared some photos. Let’s take a look at them again, just for fun. (Click the images if you’re hungry for the expanded view.)

In case you’re just joining our party… my upcoming cookbook Well Fed is packed with recipes for food you can eat every day, along with easy tips to make sure it takes as little time as possible to get you from “What the *$&^@ am I going to eat?” to stuffing paleo food into your well-deserving mouth. All of the recipes – made with no grains, legumes, soy, sugar, dairy, or alcohol – were created so you can enjoy your food every time you eat. Calorie-dense ingredients like dried fruit and nuts show up as flavoring, instead of primary ingredients, and there’s a balance of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fats, so you don’t have to worry about that stuff – you can just eat.

OK! That’s the cookbook spiel. On to the latest news!

A lot has happened in the last month. Dave finished the primary photography for all of the recipes, and I wrapped up the writing. All that remains is to slog through the final edits on the photos and to incorporate the feedback from my copy editors. Tonight (TONIGHT!), we’re burning all of the content onto DVDs and handing it off to our fabulous designer Kathleen Shannon.

And speaking of Kathleen, she finished the cover for Well Fed. Feast your eyes!

In other exciting news, Melissa and Dallas Hartwig of Whole9 agreed to write the foreword to the book, and last week, they shared their draft with me. As expected, it’s incredibly well written and includes plenty of their trademark sass. Unexpectedly, however, it made my eyes well up with tears. Such lovely words — I can’t wait for all of you to read it!

My mom has also been busy digging through boxes of old photos to add to the pages of Well Fed. Prepare yourself for a photo of 3-year-old me in our ’60s-era pink-and-gray kitchen, pics of my mom accepting her prize in the Pottsville Republican cooking contest, a shot of my 18-year-old dad at his job as a cook at a resort in the Poconos, and my Sitti, being Sitti.

It looks like our release date will be sometime during the first 10 days of December, so throughout October and November, I’ll have more news to share, as well as excerpts from the book, photo outtakes, stories about the amazing people who joined the Well Fed team to make it happen, and fun giveaways. But first, we have to finish the book… then we’re going to Prague. For a month. For real.

For now, I hope you like the cover and know that although I’m not posting as much as we’re all used to, I’m thinking about you with every word of the manuscript that I type. I can’t wait to get these recipes and stories into your hands.

We are relieved, excited, and tired 😉

It’s been a really fun summer of cooking, photographing, writing, and eating — wrapping it up is bittersweet. But going on holiday to Prague is VERY exciting.

  • Lydia says:

An early December release date is perfect. I know what a lot of people are getting for xmas this year!

    • Mel says:

That is just what I’m hoping! I love the idea of people starting their New Year’s Resolutions with Well Fed in their hands. YAY, 2012!

  • ElizabethJ says:

OMG I can’t wait! Mel, you are such an amazing woman.

  • brian t says:

Is there any place in particular you can pre-order it? I just found your website and i love it (especially the literary recommendations…I just finished reading Miss Peregrine’s and really enjoyed it)

    • Mel says:

The printed softcover will be available on Amazon in early December — and a PDF ebook that you can download immediately will be available on my site. Details to come!

Wasn’t Miss Peregrine fun?! The author is working on a sequel, which is really great news. I’m taking some new books to Prague, so I’ll probably have more recommendations for winter reading when I return.

  • Morten G says:

My mom is sooooo getting this for Christmas 😉
Btw please remember to have all oven temperatures in both F and C since she isn’t terribly unit conversion savvy (factors of 10 also often twart her).

    • Mel says:

Your wish is my command! I thought my recipes were all finished, and I just had to go through them and add the Celsius temps. Thanks for the reminder!

  • Alison says:

Long time lurker and appreciator of your recipes! I am looking forward to the cookbook!

Because I have a knack for picking these things up, “foreward” is spelled incorrectly – should be “foreword” I think.

    Thanks for doing this blog!

    • Mel says:

Thanks for looking out for me! That’s just our mockup of the cover, not the “real” cover, so we won’t have a typo on the book. Whew! But thanks for the eagle eyes!

  • Jeanye says:

So excited for you, Mel! And for all of us who will benefit from your genius.

  • LP says:

    Can’t wait!!!

  • Kelly Alice says:

Big congrats! Love the cover. Cannot wait to buy a copy!!!!!

  • David S says:

Cover design is great I will be one of the 1st to order. I have Been following your blog for some time now. Very Inspirational. Keep up the good work!!!!

  • Chia says:

Yipee!! I love that we’ll be able to get the download immediately and also get the softcover (multiple copies!) in time for holiday gifts. PERFECT !!! Enjoy Prague!

  • Jenn says:

I have been “lurking” for quite some time and and thought I should finally comment. I am so stoked on this cookbook! I started paleo over the summer and found you and it has been like a match made in heaven.

    • Mel says:

David, Chia, and Jenn – thanks so much for taking the time to share you enthusiasm. I’m really excited for you to try the new recipes — and the new versions of some old favorites. I did a lot of testing to make sure they taste even better. YAY!

  • Chowstalker says:

I accidentally hit “mark all read” in my reader and just saw this Mel! LOVE the cover!

And I’m so glad you are able to take a month long vacation in Prague and recharge after all the hard work you and Dave have put into the book!

    • Mel says:

Thanks so much, Patty! I realized this morning that it was my last morning to wake up to an alarm until October 31. It’s going to be tremendous to have zero to-do items for a while. Then in November, we’ll be back in cookbook-making business. Whew.

  • Laura R says:

I am very excited for your book! I have others and they are great, but I know that I have to pay attention to omega 6 omega 3 balance and it makes me SO happy that you have already done that! I check your website ALL the time for updates. Good luck on the finishing touches to get out into the world XD
    –Laura

  • Becky says:

Yours will also be my first Paleo cookbook. What luxury to be able to make ANYTHING in the book! I’ve been “adapting” recipes from other cookbooks, but will wallow happily in yours … thanks for doing all the work for us!

  • Sonya says:

Awesomeness! I can hardly wait! I found you through Whole9 and now am a huge fan. I share links to your recipes with friends all the time – tonight three of us are fixing you okra with the bounty we scored from the local produce lady.

  • Kim says:

I’m stoked that you’re putting out a cookbook! I recently found your site and have been pouring through your recipes (they’ll be my lifesaver this next month as I complete the Whole30 program). Double-bonus that you’re a Social D fan (my fav band as well). 🙂

    • Mel says:

Good for you for tackling a Whole30 — you’re gonna love how you feel doing it!

Thanks for the cookbook enthusiasm. We’re getting really excited because our designer is building the pages now. Seeing it layed out is so much fun!

Did you know Mike Ness is now a vegan?! I like to imagine us having a knock-down, drag-out conversation about nutrition 😉
