Whole30: Day 18

From June 1 through June 30, I’m participating in the Whole30 clean-up/change your life/heal thyself plan. (Here’s why.)

Join me now for another True Confessions update on my Whole30 experience.

I should probablyy state right up front that, technically, I should be starting my 30 days anew because I’ve had treats here and there. I’m not re-starting the 30 days. My goals are different than the “official” rules layed out my Moxy-Boss and Dallas. They haven’t shunned me for my behavior so I’m not ostracizing myself either. I firmly believe the 30-days-in-a-row are incredibly valuable and YOU should do it. This is definitely a case of do what I say, not what I do.

If you can live with that, let’s continue…

Training
This was another week of good intentions and not so many workouts. When you read “Food” below, you’ll understand why.

Food
Remember that genius idea I had about eating pizza art? Let’s consider the experience in two parts.

Part 1: Fantastic. The pizza was delicious: light, crispy, chewy crust… organic, locally-made artisan cheese… herbs from the chef’s garden… pretty much the best possible way to eat a food made from foods commonly considered “poison.” Also, the company was completely kickass.

Part 2: Terrible. I woke up at 2:00 a.m. after the pizza party feeling like I’d swallowed a cannonball. I was sweaty and light-headed. The pizza did not want to stay in my stomach and found two ways to escape. The cannonball-belly lasted all day Wednesday and most of Thursday.

I foolishly disregarded Moxy-Boss’s advice to eat only ONE forbidden food at a time. The gluten plus cheese combo was way too much for my dino-chow-wimpified system, and I paid the price. Not only was I in pain, I had no appetite and the pain/lack of food two-fer meant I had no energy to workout.

This is not good, people. Some might say, even, counter-productive. They would be right. I don’t feel guilty, but I do feel… let’s call it “schooled.”

Sleep
Tuesday night: 3 hours plus 6-7 hours of half-awake/half-asleep agony, writhing, sweating
Wednesday night: 7 hours with stomach growling
Thursday night: 8 hours of peaceful, restful sleep

Have I learned my lesson? I’d like to say definitively yes, but I suspect there will come a time when I will again choose to eat something my system can’t handle.

But it’s going to be a long time from now.

(And should I be fortunate enough to be invited to pizza night again – I hope, I hope! – I think I’ll focus on the company and leave the pizza for the other guests.)

Thinkin’ you want to take better care of yourself? (And still trust my judgment after this blog post?!) Here are some guidelines you might find helpful.

I totally agree with you. I've done the Whole30 as prescribed by Melissa & Dallas and this time, I took it and made it my own adding in stuff that I know I should be doing. For example, my current Whole30 includes daily foam rolling, weekly rest day requirements and such. I'm on day 4 and feeling great.

I can't help but notice that you're additions to the Whole30 were healthful ones, and mine was, like, Pizza! Pizza!… but yes, there is value in modifying the Whole30 as needed, once you've done the super-strict, regulation version.

Congrats on four days of awesome!
