Whole30: Day 12

From June 1 through June 30, I’m participating in the Whole30 clean-up/change your life/heal thyself plan. (Here’s why.)

Training
I’m still not back on my training horse/grizzly/train/whatever noun you want to put there. And I’m SO totally OK with that, it’s kind of shocking. I lolled in bed this morning with a book instead of working out, then I took a shower, ran some errands, and generally puttered. It was lovely.

Food
I suspect I didn’t enough yesterday… but what I did eat was Good. For breakfast, I stir-fried a beautiful organic yellow squash with coconut oil and turkey leftover from my emergency dinner on Thursday… I forgot to eat both of my snacks. I know! “Forgot”?!?! How it that possible? I really don’t know, I just wasn’t hungry and didn’t notice the passing time.

For lunch, I went out with my fellow Content Strategists to Athenian Bar & Grill.  I had the salad with gyro chicken, hold the yogurt, hold the feta, hold the pita. It was HUGE and delicious. The meat plates also looked tasty, but you’ll need to be militant about not being served rice, hummus, and vegetables that were swimming in an oil-like substance. My advice is to stick with the salad; it was very fresh and satisfying. Yes, I can make tastier food at home, but sometimes one is required to dine out. If you’re in downtown Austin and need dino-chow, I give Athenian my stamp of approval. (Their web site is annoyingly busted right now; here’s the Yelp page instead.

Dinner was a repeat of Thursday night, with the addition of tomato-and-olive salad, a spoonful of Sunbutter before bed, and 1/2 a Larabar because I wanted something sweet.

Sleep
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 hours.

Your morning read sounds great. Hurray for puttering! I'm going to make the tomato/olive salad for lunch today. And the line "You'll need to be militant about not being served rice … swimming in an oil-like substance" makes me feel better about turning down a rice-from-a-box at dinner with friends the other night (the "chef" was slightly huffed). I'm not one to make waves, but on the food front, I do think I need to be more "militant"! Thanks for all!

Hi, Ehsa! Hope you like the tomato salad. I had a really kickass organic tomato, and it was so luscious.

The 'militant' thing takes getting used to — and I pick my battles. In restaurants, I'm pretty ruthless, but as a guest at someone's house, it can be a little trickier. Food choices are so personal!

Not to worry: no Food Fights here … my version of "militant" in someone's house is total Teddy Bear. I'm using "militant" as a cue to speak up (which I have been generally unable to do), but in a nice way, where it might work, and I do think my good friends need to have some understanding of where I'm coming from, in a non-confrontational sort of way. "Militant" just helps me to think outside the "victim" box, and to make the effort to explain why I am choosing to eat the way I do.
