Whole30: Day 7

From June 1 through June 30, I’m participating in the Whole30 clean-up/change your life/heal thyself plan. (Here’s why.)

Training
I almost slept through my workout this morning. How is it possible that I forgot to set my alarm again?! Maybe Smudge turned it off. At any rate… I reluctantly traded pillow and pjs for Under Armour and sneakers and hit the backyard for the Air Force WOD. It was very humid and the deck of the tiki hut was coated with pollen. By the time I was done with the workout, I looked like a breaded veal cutlet.

Air Force WOD
With a running clock:
20 thrusters
20 sumo deadlift high pull
20 push jerk
20 overhead squats
20 front squats
PLUS… At the top of each minute, do 4 burpees
My time: 14:45

RX is a 65# barbell, but my backyard comes equipped only with dumbbells. I don’t even want to talk about the thrusters (a.k.a., arch nemesis numero uno) and overhead squats with two 20# dumbbells are ridiculously hard. Full disclosure: I didn’t have a good way to time myself so I did 10 reps of each movement, followed by 4 burpees. It was close enough to being on the minute, but I guarantee: towards the end, 10 reps was taking more like 90 seconds. To that I say: whatever. My workout, my rules.

Here’s some comparison fun. Check out Greg Morales doing this workout at the 2010 Midwest CrossFit Sectionals. Note that he’s so fast on his reps, he gets a second or two of rest before the burpees. Yeah. I didn’t do it that way. His time: 7:54

Food
I didn’t eat enough yesterday, but what I ate was clean, high-quality, and tasty. See? Eggs; nori rolled around smoked salmon, cucumber, and avocado; grilled chicken thighs, chard, coconut oil, cabbagge, part of an apple, a few almonds, and some badass chopped bbq beef at a cook-out. (I did not indulge in the macaroni & cheese, pasta with pesto from the garden, pasta with fresh peas and mint chutney, rolls, corn chips, or beer that was also available.)

Sleep
I slept the sleep of the righteous (or merely exhausted) for about 8.5 hours. F*ck, yeah.

Air Force WOD, not my fav at all! Great job though..especially avoiding the landmines at the BBQ.

That WOD looks super hard and I cant imagine doing it with DBs. Way. To .Go. Mel!!!

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

I like the workout except for the thrusters — but I think I'd much rather try it with a barbell than with those damn dumbbells. HOLY CRAP! Having the dumbbells instead of the bar made everything except the front squats and push jerk extra hard.

The "sweaty on every square centimeter of my body" thing didn't help much either 😉
