Whole30: Day 5

From June 1 through June 30, I’m participating in the Whole30 clean-up/change your life/heal thyself plan. (Here’s why.)

Training
It’s officially too hot and humid for me to workout past 8:00 a.m.  I joined Bonita’s tribe this morning, and the sun was like an assassin with a dossier on me. Horrible! Also, I was 15 minutes late, forgot my kettlebell at home, and have been battling menstrual cramps for about 18 hours. I’m very grateful for my workout partners who allowed me to be a grumpy storm of yuck and ignored me when I said, in a very bratty way, “Four rounds?! I’m not doing four rounds. I’m doing three rounds.” Bonita started the stopwatch and we were off.

4 rounds, for time:
100yd sprint + 15 kb swings
100yd sprint + 15 box jumps
100yd sprint + 15 burpees
100yd sprint

My time: An eternity in Hell

I walked the 100yd “sprint” after the burpees each time (pouting, if you must know). At the end of the third round, instead of quitting, I decided to do a fourth with 10 reps instead of 15s. To call the running I did “sprints” would be insulting to actual sprints, and seriously, the sun was trying to kill me. When I finished, I wobbled into a pathetic patch of shade under a tree and hung onto the fence, trying not to barf. Pretty! (That’s a good workout, though. Despite my bitching; try it!)

Food
I had a food triumph last night. A friend and I ate dinner at Habanero. Chips, beer, and chile relleno all crossed the table in front of me, and I didn’t feel even a twinge of desire to eat them. I did, however, plow through a sizeable pile of carnitas, shredded lettuce, red salsa, and guacamole. Then I came home, ate some Pamprin, and collapsed happily into my air conditioned bedroom.

In no particular order, yesterday I also ate: happy cow hamburger patties, chicken sausage, spinach, cucumbers, jicama, tiny organic peaches, olives, and a few bites of Sunbutter. (I know! Boring. Same food as Thursday. I need to go to the store again.)

Sleep
Approximately 8-9 hours but it was interrupted and fitful. Stupid girl hormones and cramps!

I welcomed your bitching this morning, it made my shoulder and hamstrings hurt less! That's what I call teamwork. 🙂

Now you're encouraging my bratty behavior 🙂 I have the perfect excuse now: my misery helps others!

I love your writing. "the sun was like an assassin with a dossier on me." and "a grumpy storm of yuck" are fantastic. And always sincere content!

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

Thanks, Bill! I really was taking the sun personally this morning 😉

Must be the day for workouts that make you want to barf. I spent a bit of time (okay 20 minutes) on the floor trying to keep my insides in after my workout today too.

Awesome on the food, I'm headed out for dinner tonight and hope some of your triumph rubs off and I can resist what everyone else is having.
