Kind of a Good News/Bad News Kind of Thing

Today was our  monthly assessment at CrossFit Women, and Angie came around on her three-month rotation. If you read my previous accounts of Angie, you’ll see that in January, I endured my Worst Angie Ever®. That’s right: Angie made me cry. And I gave up on the workout. Really, really not pretty.

So let’s talk about this morning.

Bad News:
My actual Angie performance was on par with September 2009:

70 pullups with the 1-inch band before the 10-minute cut-off
100 pushups, chest to deck
96 situps when time was called
… then I finished the situps and moved on to the 100 squats
… which gave me a time of around 24:00

Good News:
There was no crying. Amen and hallelujah! I’m on my ninth week of this Synthroid dose, and I think I’m making my comeback. My energy levels have been what I used to consider “normal” – I was even singing along to Social Distortion in the car on the way to the gym at 5:25 a.m. That’s a really good sign!

Analysis:
Barring the Worst Angie Ever® in January, I’ve been getting slightly (oh-so-slightly) better each time we do Angie. But I’ll tell you what, people: I’m growing quite weary of the pullup band. I know that when I get a kipping pullup and when I do Angie for the first time without a band, my overall time will not be pretty. But at least I’ll have passed that particular milestone. Angie has become my nemesis, taunting me every three months. She’s the worst combination of boring (100 reps? seriously?! dullsville) and ego-crushing.

Awesomeness shout-out:
To Anniebug who did Angie as RX’d for the first time last night. Sixty-five kipping pullups in 10 minutes? Brilliant, I say. Brilliant! I heard a rumor that Maggie went bandless this week, too. Congratulations, superstars!

Other news:
The corporate overlords have been keeping me very busy so I haven’t had time to visit with you, dear readers, the way I’d like. But I have good stuff coming soon! Like, maybe tonight even! What’s on tap? A recap of our Bataan Memorial Death March adventure… the skinny on the 10-week Superhero Challenge… and a video of me making homemade mayonnaise that will surely assure my place in the Goofball Hall of Fame.

I'm cheering for you Comeback Kid! Hmmmm we had a 7 min cut off:(

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

    Yeah… you guys had 7 minutes for the pullups, but a 25-minute cut-off… and we had 10 with a 22:00 cut-off. Random!

  • Aaron and Marcy says:

70 pull-ups! I've been doing "lowering-only" – so Aaron lifts me up and I lower real slowly. That way I can complete our current 3 sets of 6. Even with a band, I am very impressed with your pull-ups.

I also totally agree with long reps being boring and I swear being bored pulls the energy right out of me.

Looking forward to your video. Neither of us used to eat mayo until I started making it at home with our backyard-sourced eggs. So yum. Thanks to an immersion blender present from my parents, we can make it fresh in about 5 minutes.

Great post Mel! Angie is NOT easy and it shouldn't be. It's not an easy WOD and if it is, then you're challenging yourself enough.

Thanks for the shout out! I must also give a HUGE-OL-SHOUT to Myriam who did 85 pull-ups with no band and had major skin flapping to prove it! She made me look like a slacker!

Melissa, your blogpost made my day! Thank you so much for sharing! Angie broke me this mornin', but I'm recovered and ready to conquer her in 3 months:)
