Heavy Lifting & Heavy Metal

Ladies and gentlemen, we have safely arrived at Friday. Congratulations!

Friday means Dave and I head to the craptastic gym for heavy lifting. Today’s workout was 5X5 front squat and 5X5 bench press. (Sssshhhh… don’t tell anyone: I’m beginning to love the front squat.)

The first time I did them back in October, they were very uncomfortable and scary, but now I’m all prepared for the discomfort, and poof! it’s gone. This morning, I did my last set at 100 lbs., a 15-lb. increase over the last time!

Honestly, I kinda feel like today was a “cheat” workout because I love bench press, too. I did four solid sets at 95 (my usual), then decided to try 100 lbs. on the last set “for fun.” I did four unbroken, took a 1-second “get your head straight” rest, and pressed out the last one. FUN!

There’s a lesson in there somewhere about having the courage to try the heavier weight sooner in my workout, but for now, I’m just celebrating a Really Good Workout.

Which brings me to the heavy metal portion of our broadcast…

Karaoke Apocalypse is playing the Highball tonight, and there’s no cover, and there are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages to be had if you’re into that sort of thing, and so there’s really no excuse for you to not come out and play with me.

The band added a bunch of new songs to the list, including The Clash version of “I Fought the Law” and “Call Me” by Blondie. I might even try that one tonight!

Here’s Debbie Harry in 2009, somehow being both punk rock, elegant, sassy, and wise, all at the same time. I love the orchestra and heels – that’s a f*cking flute! With Blondie! Tonight will be EXACTLY like this.

Hey Mel – I might have to hit up Highball tonight. Sounds too fun!

Which craptastic gym do you go to? I think I need a place where I can lift heavy as a supplement to CFC. Don't want to join a fancy gym…

    Hopefully I'll see you tonight!

South Austin Gym. $99 + tax for the year. They have two lifting cages, two bench press stations, tons of dumbbells — and they don't seem to care at all when we do crazy CrossFit stuff there. It's a very "live and let live" space.
