Workout Envy

Do you ever read other CrossFitters’ accounts of their workouts and feel the itch to try a particular WOD yourself? That’s how I felt this week, reading about Erika’s and Barbara’s exploits. This workout got a hold of my imagination, and I really, really needed to try it:

Saturday WOD:
100m walking lunges
50 situps
100m walking lunges
40 situps
100m walking lunges
30 situps
100m walking lunges
20 situps
100m walking lunges
10 situps

Holy schmoley! It took me 22:57 to finish this sucker.

I touched my back knee to the ground on every lunge, and alternated my hands on my head and on my hips to keep my chest up – although what I really wanted to do was prop myself up by putting my hands on my thighs with every step. Each 100m = 98 lunges for me.

That’s a lotta lunges, yo.

I predict that by Monday morning, I’ll be waddling and using handrails to assist me in climbing stairs (along with my bathroom counter to assist with… other stuff… ahem).

I finished up with some outdoor play time: practiced my handstand kickup; did pushups on the track, facing uphill in the grass, and with my feet on a big ol’ log; worked on my kipping swing; got thisclose to doing a deadhang chinup from an almost-completely hanging position; walked on a log balance beam; and concocted a plan to practice climbing up and down our ladder to try to chase away my fear of Climbing on Things™ in preparation for the Warrior Dash.

I didn’t feel particularly strong or fast or superhero-ish this morning, but it was gorgeous outside – cool, breezy, brilliantly sunny – and I had fun kicking my own butt. Even though my quads were wimpering.

The next WOD I need to do to satisfy my workout envy?

5 rounds:
10 back squat, 95#
25 air squats
400m run

That looks like a good one for next Saturday…

Mel! The I AM wod called for 100 ft walking lunges… not 100m. You are a ROCKSTAR for doing 500m of walking lunges… and you may want to consider an ice bath today…

  • jencereghino says:

I honestly can't imagine…I did a 400M walking lunge with our niece, as per CrossFit.com's November 25 WOD, and thought my legs might fall off!

And, I too have a fear of ladders and all things high. I really hate changing our air filters…so, I can't wait to hear about this "plan" of yours!

that sounds like a fun workout- the situp one! i love me some situps. hahah i do get that itch. i read people's workouts and write them down to try. =D

  • Barbara says:

Yep…that WOD sucked! The legs/tailbone were NOT pleased at all:)

It's funny, as crossfitters I think we are all in different stages of envy with each others abilities and WOD's.

  • Melissa says:

Good lord, I will never have workout envy of anything involving lunges. For some reason, walking lunges just kill my quads like nothing else can. They get really tight and I have to stand up and shake 'em out before I keep going… very frustrating!

You are a total BADASS for doing that, and so enthusiastically!

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

Lisa –> Really? Feet?! I saw it in everyone's blogs as 100m… and I'm here to tell you: It can be done 😉

Jen –> I've been wanting to try that 400m walking lunge WOD. Mentally, that one seems pretty challenging. We did 500m of lunges yesterday, but breaking them up with situps really helped. As for the "climbing on tall things," I'm going to practice walking up and down our ladders, just to get used to being "up" with my hands and feet doing stuff — and we're going to see if we can find a gym nearby that has a cargo net I can try before the big day on May 1. I'll, of course, share all climbing adventures…

Traynharder –> It's a pretty funny sensation to be thinking, "Yay! It's almost time to do situps." but that's what that workout was like!

Barbara –> Yesterday was the first time in a long time that I didn't rub my tailbone raw. We had a mat on the grass, and I think that helped. Less friction! Also, I put the soles of my feet together and let my knees butterfly out to the sides — I think that took pressure off my tailbone. Try that next time and see what you think! It also helps put more focus on the lower part of the abdominal wall.

Melissa –> My quads were getting jello-y on the fourth and fifth rounds, and today, my butt is pretty sore. But yeah, I like lunges, so it was a good "play" one for me. And thank you for the BADASS compliment. Not feeling so badass lately.

100ft? damn. i did 100m at the track. no wonder i was wacky afterward. ha!

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

Dude. My legs. You do realize we did a mile and a quarter of lunges. SO WRONG.

  • Lisa says:

Yeah I just double checked, feet not yards! So yall just did the super-elite version. But I hear you, I love lunges and situps.

  • Barbara says:

OK new envy. MY friend and CF coach in Ventura did a 1 mile run with a 45lb bar…:)

  • Erin says:

Oh my god. I thought I was going to die last week when I had to do 200m walking lunges, during the 200 meters and afterward. The pain I felt the rest of the week just shows me that I need to do lunges much more often.

The hardest part out of that workout? Having to do 3 broad jump attempts after the lunges. I had no muscles left!
