I Admit It: I Cupcaked

Read the following statement with your internal voice cranked up to 11 on the whiner scale: “But I don’t want to go to CrossFit in 29-degrees.”

That was me this morning.

I do feel a bit disloyal to my CrossFit Women classmates who braved the cold to do their workout this morning. I’ve forced myself many times to train when I was tired or cold or didn’t feel like it or didn’t want to do the particular WOD for the day. But today, I just. didn’t. want. to.

Here’s what I did at the craptastic gym instead:

3X5 deadlift: warmup 8 @ 95#, 3 sets @ 135#
3X5 bench press: warmup 10 @ 65#, 2 sets @ 90#, last set @ 95#
1:00 plank + :30 left plank + :30 right plank

My deadlift form continues to be crummy. I know what I’m doing wrong, but I can’t get my body to listen to my noggin. Yet.

I seriously got tears of frustration in my eyes this morning when 135# felt just so so so heavy. One thirty five is not heavy for me. What is happening?!

But placing a nice big smiley face in the plus column, I’m loving my bench press. It feels Good, and every time I do bench presses, I feel more confident about the weight.

That’s kind of how it goes, right?

Well, perhaps yopu were smarter than you think. My hands are STILL swollen from the frozen pull-up torture device:)

I hear ya! My body (and knee) can only handle so much 20 degree weather training. My joints get all creaky and they just don't bend! I'm aiming to stay injury free during this central Texas COLDER THAN THOU period.

Well you were missed, but you're still a champ! If I'd bailed on this morning's workout, there's no way I would have pulled off your craptastic gym feat. So more power to you, little lady! Hope I see you tomorrow!

It happens. And may I just say, I've been lurking a lot but I ADORE you and your blog. I'm getting some stuff together for my own (on cooking, food, and pretty things that I like) based around being Paleo in a small urban kitchen with a teeny tiny stove. Your blog has been a huge inspiration. I hope I get to meet you someday and do a WOD with you, even though you will probably leave me in the dust!

Barbara, the pullup bar was the thing I dreaded the most!

Anniebug, I wish I could blame creaky joints. It was more a creaky attitude 😉

BLAKE! Rock star. I want to hear what you thought of that workout. It looked like a mean one.

Hi, Meghan! Welcome to the 'hood. Definitely shoot me an email or post to comments when your blog is up so we can come visit you there. And up for a WOD together anytime!

Don't be too hard on yourself – after all – you still got a workout in! I'm kinda glad "cupcake" is catching on though 😉

  • Melissa says:

Dang, I am so impressed with your bench press! My bench press is so weak. (My deadlift is good, though!) Be proud of yourself for getting into the gym, even if you didn't Crossfit it up.

And (I guess your good influence is rubbing off on me)… that cupcake looks nasty.

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

Melissa, I tried to pick a cupcake photo that wouldn't make us all want to eat one!

Aaron, I LOVE that phrase. It's definitely part of the CrossFit lexicon.
