Sometimes You’re the Bear

I’m on my countdown to Vegas, baby. We’re leaving Austin Thursday morning and by 1:00 p.m., I’ll be at CrossFit Las Vegas for a workout (I hope I do a good job representing CrossFit Central; I’m nervous about the workout!) By 3:30 p.m., I expect to be wearing a dress that exposes too much leg and cleavage, sipping a cocktail, and placing a $10-chip on the pass line at the craps table. I intend to accessorize for three days with faux eyelashes and a cocktail glass.

In preparation, I’m eating clean and pushing hard in my workouts. Gotta make those deposits in the good health bank – ’cause I’ll be withdrawing health points AND cash for 72 hours.

Crystal gave us a whiz-bang workout this morning. I loved it. LOVED it!

Monday Bootcamp, part one
4 rounds, for time:

  • 8 weighted burpees, 15-lb. dumbbells
  • 10 push jerk, 15-lb. dumbbells
  • weighted bear crawl (approx. 70 steps)
  • 20 weighted walking lunges, 15-lb. dumbbells

My time: 15:40

Oh, the bear crawls. Today was my first time trying them with weights, and it was really… different. And fun. And hard. And sweaty. And dirty. And awesome. I want to try it with kettlebells sometime. It’s incredibly tricky doing the bear crawl on any kind of downhill slant. I. want. more.

Part two
2 rounds:

  • 60 bicycles
  • 3X broad jump + 5 pushups

Part three
4 rounds w/ a partner:

  • plank (while partner sprints 100m)
  • sprint 100m (while partner planks)

When I got home I was sweaty, dirty, and happy… and hungry as a bear.

I just started following your blog about a month ago. I am curious about this CrossFit. I read the Vegas website and they didn't really say anything about competing; is it competition based?

Would love to know any restaurants you enjoy in Vegas too; always looking for good finds! If you need some ideas too, I am happy to offer up our favorites 🙂

    Hi, Alisa!

Is CrossFit competition based? Yes and now. The CrossFit Games were recently held in CA. That was an international competition of CrossFit workouts. But "regular" people do CrossFit, too, and there's no requirement to compete.

It's called "the sport of fitness" because each workout is timed with the idea that you're competing against YOURSELF to do your best. I love that!

But there are also Challenges and competitions throughout the year to see how we stack up against each other, too. I usually compete but not with the idea that I'll "win" — I participate to see how I did vs. my last attempt or last year or whatever. It's very motivating to do a workout activity that stresses ASSESSING progress fairly often. The workouts incorporate different elements every time, so you really get away from the mentality of "tuesday I do arms, wednesday I do cardio", etc.

I would love to hear what your favorite restaurants are. Right now, I'm excited because we're going to Red Square at Mandalay Bay for their excellent vodka martinis and steak topped with blue cheese. http://www.frommers.com/destinations/lasvegas/D32252.html

Weighted bear crawl?! That's sounds b-r-u-t-a-l. Brutally awesome! Brusome? For when the regular bear get "too easy" I guess…

    Anyway, have fun in Vegas!!

Rio's Seafood Buffet is absolutely AMAZING! And since you're making those deposits in the health bank, I'll even tell you that their dessert bar is orgasmic! ; -)

That sounds like a really cool program. I am enjoying our workouts now, which are similar in nature it sounds.

I haven't eaten at Red Square, but hear it is fabulous! Some friends ate there recently on one of their last visits. In Mandalay Bay, we just enjoyed the Shabu Shabu at Shanghai Lily, and actually have discounts to four of the other restaurants, but just haven't tried them yet.

We both love Bouchon in the Venetian if you are looking for more fine dining; it is a Thomas Keller restaurant. Let me know if there is anything in particular you are looking for!
