Swing, Swing!

Listen to “Swing Swing” by The All-American Rejects while I tell you about the workout Dave and I did this morning… (This song always gets stuck in my head when my workout includes lots of dumbbell or kettlebell swings.)

Tuesday means a CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance workout in our yard/front street. When the alarm went off, I was extremely reluctant to roll out of bed. I was at band practice (Peter Elliott & the Sellouts) ’til almost 11:00 last night, and 5:57 a.m. came so very early. I think I hit the snooze four times, which put me dangerously close to just calling it — but telling Dave he could sleep more somehow gave me the will to get up (and, as it turns out, motivated him to get up, too).

This turned out to be one of those workouts that doesn’t look so bad on paper, then turns out to be a MONSTER in practice.

CrossFit workout
3 rounds:
25 swings, 20-lbs.
50 pushups
25 swings
50 situps
25 swings
50 squats

CrossFit Endurance workout
3 rounds, all-out effort:
:30 on/ :30 off
:30 on / 1:00 off

I finished the CF workout in 25:34, a little over the cut-off time I’d set for myself. The pushups were tough, man. No doubt about it. I spent a fair amount of time gloating (to myself, of course) at work today, thinking about how I’d done 180 low, strong pushups before most people had even had their first cup of coffee.

The sprints were pretty fun. It’s definitely an unfamiliar feeling to push that hard at running… which I liked and feared… which means it was awesome! There are only 18 days until the ZOOMA half marathon, and I can see how sprint work could make the long hauls easier.

Now I’m off to another band practice (St. Joe’s Choir), but secretly, I’m really looking forward to the time I can once again lie my head on the pillow.
