Sincere Apologies to My Knees

My poor beleaguered knee caps!

Saturday, during the I AM CROSSFIT workout, I was daydreaming la-la-la-ing about something when CLANK!, a 15-lb. dumbbell bashed into my left knee. No major damage, but I saw stars for a few seconds and spit out expletives at a rate sure to alarm our neighbors with kids. This morning while I got dressed for Bootcamp, I examined the mottled blue-and-brown-and-green smudgy bruises. “Hmmmph, ” I thought. “Reminds me of Roller Derby.”

This morning at Bootcamp, during our handstand pushups (with feet on the picnic bench) my feet slid backwards and BAM! both knees smashed into the concrete bench. Stars, expletives, etc.

And then, not even 1 minute later, during box jumps — which I was doing on an 18-inch high piece of stone wall — I caught my toe and KA-BLAM! conked my right knee, shin, and ankle on the wall. More stars, many more expletives.

I’m not sure what was going on with me this morning, but I finished the workout without any other major mishaps. Should I roll myself in bubble wrap for the rest of the day?!

Our workout:
3 rounds for time:

  • 10 renegade rows, 15-lb. dbs
  • 15 jump squats
  • lap around the parking lot

My time: 6:20

2 rounds with a partner, 10-lb. med ball:

  • around-the-world
  • 10 knee slam situps

Max rounds in 10 minutes:

  • 15 box jumps
  • 12 med ball cleans, 10-lb. ball
  • 9 handstand pushups

I finished 3 full rounds and 7 med ball cleans before time ran out (that includes the time it took to whine about my various crashes and bashes.)

30 walking lunge w/ med ball overhead press, then sprint up the snake path

I’m actually SUPER excited because I was jumping at the highest part of the wall today. YAY! Then I came home and leapt right up on my 18-inch box. Woot! I might be ready for that 24-inch monster soon!

yowza!! This may sound weird, but your description of pain, slips, bruises, and “blunders” makes me REALLY MISS BOOTCAMP at Deep Eddy. Fearing a slip on a park bench when doing jumps or push-ups, or even that tricky downhill run and turn on the concrete during a 400 m run, with that ever present stream of running water. Yes, I miss it.

Working out + fearing for your life = Crossfit @ Deep Eddy.

My internet is up and running, so expect more posts and responses!
