Officially Freaking Out

Tomorrow is the kick-off for the I Am CrossFit Challenge.

This was me last night:

In a dreamy internal voice, “La-la-la, it’s so nice to be lying here watching NCIS, feeling all proud-tired after my 11-mile run. I am so awesome… la-la-la.”

[check email]

“Oh! Cool! A video of what we’re doing at the I Am CrossFit workout on Saturday. Sweet.”

[watch the video]

“Damn it!”

[jump up from the bed, startling Dave]

“Sh*t! F*ck!”

[stomp around the room]

“Damn it to Hell!”

Dave, alarmed, “What? What?”

“Oh, man! The intermediate level has to do 30 pullups on each round tomorrow, instead of 15. THIRTY PULLUPS! Event the Spartan 300 is only 25 pullups for 2 rounds. THIRTY PULLUPS! Even with the box, how am I going to do THREE ROUNDS OF THIRTY PULLUPS?!?!?!??!”

So, yeah. I’m being melodramatic, but that’s pretty much word for word how it went last night.

Here’s the video of the coaches demonstrating the workout:

I Am CrossFit Complete Demo from CrossFit Central on Vimeo

I’m doing the intermediate level, so my workout will look like this:

3 rounds for time:

  • 400m run
  • 30 pullups (with the lovely assistance of the box)
  • 7 hang cleans, 65-lb. bar

I haven’t done pullups in weeks (months?) because of my Frankenneck surgery, and I don’t think I’ve ever done cleans with a barbell — and definitely not with 65 pounds.

Sigh.

I did designate 2009 as The Year Of The Pullup, so I shouldn’t complain.

I should rejoice!

Yay! First step toward my 2009 goal. Yay!
(I’m hoping you’re getting the sarcasm there, ’cause I am definitely not feeling psyched about the workout tomorrow. It looks awful, truth be told.)

So, yeah… a reminder for you and me of what I’ve set out for myself this year:

1. Pullups.
I may not conquer the kipping pullup this year, but I’m going to keep trying. Dave built me a pullup bar in the backyard as a Christmas present, so I have zero excuses for not practicing.

2. Box jumps.
I need to stop being scared of the big box and learn to jump on the 20-incher. I’m getting myself a plyo box this month so I can practice at home. (Man! It is brutal stripping away all possibility of lame excuses.)

3. Handstand.
I have a matt for safety and Randal for inspiration, so again, no excuse for not practicing my handstands.

4. Three half marathons… with a smile on my face.
I’m registered for the 3M Half as a practice… the Austin Marathon as a “real” one… and the ZOOMA Women’s as the one where I’ll set (and reach!) a time goal. My intention is finish all three looking and feeling strong.

5. Reduced body fat.
I’m not putting a number on this because my life gift to myself is not be held hostage by numerals any more. But those hug handles on my back? Kiss ’em goodbye. By the end of 2009, they’re gone, baby, gone.

Lucky me! The path to reaching those goals starts tomorrow.

yay?

Once I turned to the band I started to love the pull up, for real. If you need an afraid-of-the-20-incher-plyo-box friend to get the jitters with, I’m totally down. That’s one of my goals for this year as well…

So glad I found your blog. You rock! That that you are a roller girl, love your style, love your hair, love AUSTIN (I moved away 5 years ago and still desperately want to come home), love CrossFit (no studio close to me though).

Erika, I just order 16″, 18″ and 24″ plyo boxes so I can practice at home. My shins are TERRIFIED, but by the end of 2009, I will be jumping on that tall box.

    I WILL!

    i will.

    seeMOMMYrun, love YOUR site. Nice!

Let me know if you come to Austin for a visit, and we'll hit Deep Eddy park and the hike & bike trail for a CrossFit workout. We can do the Murph, then fill up on chips and queso!
