Snatched From the Jaws of Doom

Today was the workout that almost didn’t happen.

And the chain of events that put my morning routine in danger started yesterday. With a flat tire and the subsequent cancellation of Monday Bootcamp. But no worries — we planned to do a make-up today, Tuesday.

But last night at band practice, shivering from the cold wind outside, grumpy because of the monthly cramps inside, I texted Crystal.

“Freezing rain in the a.m.?”

And our Tuesday make-up class was re-scheduled to Thursday.

Relief and delight infused my bloodstream at the idea of a “no alarm morning” and snuggling under the covers.

But this morning, when I woke up at 6:00 a.m. anyway (!), I started thinking.

Before I knew it, I was bargaining with myself about how long I could stay in bed and still have time to do a workout before I had to get to the office. And while I was consciously doing that, my subconscious was making up a workout.

DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!

So I got up and as a gift to myself, stayed in the fleece pants I slept in. Added: silk long underwear. Gray cold weather top. Knit hat. Gloves. Ready for anything.

DAMN IT!

I came out to the studio (workout room, music room, writing room) and bought a little time by checking my email. I found this in my inbox:

Runner’s World Quote of the Day:
“Remember, the feeling you get from a good run is far better than the feeling you get from sitting around wishing you were running.” — Sarah Condor

DOUBLE DAMN IT!

It was like the whole universe was making sure I worked up a sweat today.

So this is what I did:

Warmup
3X 10 squats + 10 pushups + 10 rotations
high knees, butt kicks, lunge+rotation, punter kick

Workout
400 m run
100 jump rope + 50 squats
100 jump rope + 25 pushups
100 jump rope + 25 dips w/ feet on a med ball
100 jump rope + 50 walking lunges
100 jump rope + 25 overhead press, 15-lb. dumbbells
100 jump rope + 25 push press, 15-lb. dumbbells
400 m run

10-lb. med ball
25 Russian twist+tap
25 cradles

And, of course, now I feel better, and I’m looking forward to breakfast, and work doesn’t seem so bad, and Hey! Neat! I have band practice tonight and…

DAMN IT!
