Round 1 of The Great Peariment 2008 was pretty exciting. Round 2 last night was a bit disappointing for one of our judges (me), but delivered a new favorite pear to Judge Humphreys.
Our judging criteria:
- Was it sweet or tart?
- How ’bout the texture?
- It would go well with…
- Celebrity it most reminds us of…
Comise
- pleasing Spring green skin
- strong pear aroma
- soft texture, thick skin
- very sweet
- cost=$2.06 for one!
I like eating it like an artichoke, scraping the flesh out of the skin with my teeth. Dave liked this one a lot, and didn’t mind the tougher skin.
Would be good with a sharp cheese (cheddar, provolone), pecans, and pork chops.
The celebrity that it most reminded us of was… Queen Latifah.
California Bartlett
- yellowish-green skin
- firm texture, more like a potato
- tender skin
- the least flavorful so far, not as sweet – pretty middle-of-the-road
Dave declared it “unimpressive.” I thought it might be good for cooking, but it’s nothing to write home about.
Would be good with cottage cheese or cooked into sauerkraut.
The celebrity that it most reminded us of was… Katherine McPhee.
Stay tuned for the third installment of The Great Peariment 2008 tomorrow.
