Lose For Good

I had a silly meandering thought the other day… what if for every pound I lost, someone, somewhere gained a pound? What if there was some cosmic equilibrium that guaranteed the universe and all its contents would maintain a particular weight? And what if I could decide who received my extra poundage?

For a few minutes, it was spiteful fun making a mental list of the people I might curse with the L-Bs I’ve lost. (My former gym teacher Mr. Dick Ketz tops the list.)

But when I’m not amusing myself by pretending to be heartless, I realize it’s actually not very funny.

In 2007, there were:

  • 862 million underfed people in the world (according to Bread for the World)
  • 1.6 billion overweight people in the world (according to the World Health Organization)

In response, Weight Watchers has launched a program called Lose for Good… which gives me another reason to be proud to be associated with the WW organization.

“The goal of Lose for Good is simple: To help make the world a healthier place.

For every pound of weight lost with Weight Watchers between 9/7/08 and 10/18/08, Weight Watchers will donate the equivalent of one pound of food, up to one million dollars, to one of two organizations: Share Our Strength, the leading organization working to make sure no kid in America grows up hungry, and Action Against Hunger, which brings immediate and long-term solutions for hunger to populations around the world.”

I’ve been looking for a way to re-focus my energy to lose the last 3 lbs. that are between me and my Weight Watchers goal — and then I need to start on the next phase of fat loss to get to my personal ideal weight. This seems like pretty good motivation!

I’m on a mission to banish 6 lbs. from my body over the next six weeks — and turn my discarded L-Bs into food for people who need it.

Neato!
