When it rains, Crystal holds our Bootcamp in a parking garage. I know it sounds weird, but I love those dirty, grimy, gray garage workouts. I love running up and down the parking ramps, sprinting the stairs (two at a time!), getting coated in dust, watching the construction workers watch us with mystified expressions on their faces… it feels like romping around a post-apocalyptic playground.
I always join in the mild complaining about the dirt with everyone else, but I secretly enjoy it. I’ve spent enough of my life trying to be a “good little girl” and “look pretty.” It’s damn fun to play so hard your clothes are filthy and the water runs black when you step in the shower.
Which brings me to my other favorite thing about the garage: the “la-la shower” afterward. A la-la shower is what I call those showers in which you find yourself standing under the spray, blankly staring at the tiled wall, just enjoying the cascade of warm water in the quiet still of “workout done” but “not yet at the office.” It’s a no-man’s land of relaxation — no clocks, no to-do list — where you can just be, like, “la la la-la, la, la-la…” Hence the name, “la-la shower.”)
