Whole30: Day 7 Recap

From August 1 through August 23, I’m documenting my Whole30, including the when, what, where, and how much of my sleep, activity, food, and mood. Read about why I’m doing the Whole30 right here. Not familiar with the Whole30? Learn all about it here and get extra help with the Whole30 Daily.

Whole30: Day 7

And blammo! The high energy and euphoria of yesterday was replaced with moodiness and a short temper overnight. Four hours after waking up,  I felt like I needed a nap, and that continued all day. I finally succumbed after lunch and snoozed for 2 hours, then got up, typed a bit, and went to yoga. LAME! This happens a lot when thyroid hormones are in flux, so I’m not surprised… but it’s not all that much fun either.

Sleep
8 hours — 11:00 to 7:00

Activity
Kundalini yoga: The perfect class: lots of intense breathing plus a 12-minute meditation with our arms held overhead. SHOULDERS OF FIRE! Robin actually said, “Yeah… you get that ‘7-minute shoulder burn'”… like shoulders of fire is a known thing. Woot and yeesh.

Food
I’ve found my appetite is less ravenous, and I feel better if I eat in a 11-hour window — usually between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. so I can stop eating about 2-3 hours before going to bed — and don’t snack between meals or before bed. Because I’m dealing with my thyroid experiment, I’m measuring and tracking my food right now. I aim for 40% fat, 30% protein, 30% carbs.

Breakfast, 8:00 a.m.
3.5 ounces chicken breast
2 cups chopped collard greens
1/2 cup sweet potato
1/2 tablespoon coconut oil + Tsardust Memories

Lunch, 1:30 p.m.
SB&J Burger: 3.5 ounces grassfed beef burger w/ 1 tablespoon Sunbutter & 2 tablespoons strawberry “jam”
1 cup steamed broccoli w/ 1/2 teaspoon ghee & garlic
1/2 cup jicama
1 cup snap peas
1 Brazil nut (Selenium!)

Dinner, 8:00 p.m.
1 cup Chocolate Chili
1/2 head butter lettuce + 1/4 sweet onion + 1 teaspoon olive oil + lemon juice
1 cup steamed broccoli w/ 1/2 teaspoon olive oil + garlic
1 giant strawberry
1 teaspoon Sunbutter

Mood
Meh. Fatigued and emotional, plus my body is sore from my workouts yesterday. It felt SO good to lift and run yesterday, and today, I wasn’t feelin’ in a fun way.

Photo of the Day
A few weeks ago, I told you about some awards won by Well Fed, and I lamented the fact that my tiara hadn’t yet arrived. My mom remedied that problem. Mom always indulges my desire to act like a princess. (Thanks, Mom!)

I’m very confused about coconut oil..refined or unrefined? So much info out there hard to know. Thanks!

  • JC says:

    Mary-unrefined coconut oil. Here’s an reticle about it… http://www.naturalnews.com/036554_extra_virgin_coconut_oil_health.html

Hope you are feeling better today!

I used Halloween a couple of years ago as an excuse to buy a tiara. Every girl should have one. 🙂

  • Danielle says:

You asked, so I’ll tell you: my day was an epic fail from a Whole 30 perspective. I see no need to rehash the details but the good thing is that picked myself up and dusted myself off and here I am!

  • Jessica says:

I am loving these posts! I have wanted to go paleo for 2 years, but have yet to make the leap. I think it is the food prep that is holding me back. As in making sure I have good food ready to go in the fridge. Plus wondering how to truly meal plan my week. I wonder if I could just save all your recap posts and use them for my future meal plans?? 🙂 I have Well Fed and love it! Can’t wait for the next one!

  • Cami Sebern says:

The tiara suits you. Will you please bring it with you to Colorado?

  • Kelly R says:

I am on Day 5 of Whole30 (I’ve been paleo for over a year), but I feel like all of it has been a gimmie because I have had a stomach bug for the last week. I have only eaten bananas, sweet potatoes, nectarines and tea for the last three days. Probably less than 500 calories a day. I am exhausted, hungry and frustrated that eating causes pain.

Any advice on paleo eating when you are sick? In my prior life, I would chow down on some soup or crackers but I’m not sure how to handle this in the paleo world.

  • Alison says:

What is sun butter? Glad your feeling better today.

  • Jennifer says:

Is it wrong for me to say that I’m glad someone else was fatigued yesterday? I think Day 7 was my worst day. I had low energy and a headache all day. My manager commented this morning that I started yawning around 2:30 p.m. Little does she know I started yawning from the second I woke up.

I mostly blame the Olympics, but I got a solid 8 hours last night, and that has helped a lot today.

  • Courtney says:

@Kelly R: For a true stomach bug (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or any combo), I always recommend the BRATTY diet to my patients, which depending on how strict you are might not meet your definition of paleo. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, tea, and yogurt. Bland as can be but amazingly effective. As much fluids as you can safely handle without increasing your symptoms. No fruit, it will just irritate your gut more. And electrolytes if needed, depending on how severe your symptoms from said bug. If your symptoms last more than 5 days without change, see your physician. Good luck!

  • Kate says:

Oh yes on the tired and cranky! It is so annoying since I was feeling so good, too! I also blame hormones and the heat. I am sticking to it, but I admit to a little too much almond butter and grape love right now. Hang in there gals! I am waiting for “the magic” 🙂

  • Kelly says:

Thanks for the song!! Just the ticket during election season. 🙂

  • Candice says:

Talked about your blog during lunch today. The fan base is growing by the second! Thanks for rocking!

  • Erin says:

Every girl needs a tiara…glad your mom got your set up in style!

  • Makeda says:

I’m new to the Whole30 way of life and I found your blog through their website. I had a question on the chili, I didn’t think cocoa was approved during a Whole30. Can you clarify that for me?

Thanks for all the recipe posts and menu planning. It is a help as I’m learning to navigate my way through my kitchen from a whole new perspective.

    • Mel says:

      Hi! Glad you found me.

Cocoa was a debate between Melissa & Dallas for a while. You can read their blog post about it here: http://whole9life.com/2010/09/the-great-cocoa-debate/

The bottom line is this: If eating unsweetened cocoa in savory dishes doesn’t trigger your sugar demon, it’s approved for the Whole30. If eating unsweetened cocoa produces cravings in your for sweets, then avoid it during the Whole30.

Desserts with cocoa are NOT approved because they violate the spirit of the Whole30 which is to break reliance on sweets, dessert, etc.

      Hope this helps clarify!

  • Makeda says:

Melissa thanks so much for the quick response. In the past I have used chocolate as my go-to comfort food (it magically makes everything better. Now I know it was just fooling my brain). Since I am only a week into my Whole30 I’m going to guess the addiction is not yet broken so it is best for me to stay away from it for now. I look forward to getting to a place where I can try this recipe out though because it sounds delish. It looks like I will be able to do that just in time for cooler weather 🙂 Thanks again!
