Whole 30: Day 4

From June 1 through June 30, I’m participating in the Whole30 clean-up/change your life/heal thyself plan. (Here’s why.)

Training
Apparently I’m really embracing the whole “rest if you need it” thing this week. I took another unscheduled rest day this morning, and I feel just fine about it. I slept like a rock last night and just really didn’t want to leave my pillow when the alarm went off this morning. So I didn’t.

Food
Spot on! Went to a movie last night (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) that coincided with dinner time, so I packed Dino-Chow Happy Meal to eat during the movie. Can I get a ‘hell, yeah’ for giant handbags?!

In no particular order, yesterday I ate: happy cow hamburger patties, chicken sausage, spinach, green beans, beet tops, cucumbers, jicama, tiny organic peaches, avocado, olives, and a few bites of Sunbutter.

Sleep
Only 7 hours but it was solid as a CrossFitter’s core.

In other news…
Not food logging continues to work โ€“ because for 8 months I diligently logged every bite so I could learn how to eat properly. Now I just eat the same way without writing it all down, and still weigh my protein because I never eyeball it properly. If you’ve never logged your food, you might try it and see if it helps you. If you’ve been logging for a while, maybe it’s worth trying a break? Think on it. Also you should know: my stomach is feeling flatter than it has been, and my jeans are loose in the waist and baggy in the butt. I’ve earmarked a gift card for the day I need to get new jeans. Woot!

Need to take better care of yourself? Here are some guidelines you might find helpful.

Melissa, I love your blog! Been CF-ing since February, did a Paleo challenge at gym in April, and continuing with the Paleo lifestyle. I'm a former roller girl with a small league in south Houston… short lived, but fun. I'm starting to Rx the WODs, so they are getting harder for me, yet I can't help but anticipate the next day's workout. Love it! Your blog is quite encouraging and entertaining. Take care! ~Karyn

YAY! Melicious FOR THE WIN! =D

you weigh your protein? does that mean you sort of do zone? how much protein do you eat at every meal? i'm dabbling between 3-4 oz. i tried 2 oz but that was totally not enough.

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

    Hey, Tra!

I sorta kinda zone in that I always eat protein, fat, and carbs together, and I build every meal/snack around a protein base. I eat 3-4.5 oz per meal, depending on the kind of protein it is… and about 1-2 oz. in snacks.

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

Karyn –> Welcome! I'm glad you like the blog. Which league in Houston? I always wonder how much better I'd be at Roller Derby, now that I'm doing CrossFit. But I can't imagine signing up for the battering again ๐Ÿ˜‰

    ~Melisa –> Thanks for the thumbs-up!

    Hi Mel!
Love your blog. Found you via Whole 30- I now on day 20ish….who's counting:-)

What did you think of the girl with the dragon tatoo movie. I just finished the book which was great!

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Diana… glad you like the blog. Thanks for posting. Twenty days = awesome. And yeah, at some point it's just "day ##, aka, life."

The movie did a great job of streamlining the plot to work in the shorter movie format. Lisbeth was totally rad… but the scenes that were violent and brutal in the book were devastatingly vicious on film. Swedes are not afraid to go to the ugly place. So it was thrilling and entertaining and, sometimes, very uncomfortable. But overall, I liked it. I read this morning that Daniel Craig might play the lead in an American version. Sign me up!

  • Diana says:

Yeah I was a little hesitant to see it due to the brutal nature of some of the scenes. We'll see but I am getting ready to start the second book.
Hope you have a peaceful and happy weekend !

I played for South Side Roller Derby in 2008. I wonder the same thing about how much better I'd be now, but at 38 years old, I'd take forever to recover from the beatings. I like having control of how hard I play and estimating my recovery time… competing with myself at the gym. ๐Ÿ™‚ Karyn

I retired shorty before my 40th birthday and was bummed that I didn't play into my 40s… just to be able to say, "I played Roller Derby in my 40s." But I wanted to be done skating more than I wanted the ego strokes ๐Ÿ˜‰
