Well Fed Magazine

cover1Today is the official launch day of a project we’ve been working on since last summer: a magazine version of our Well Fed cookbooks. It’s a “greatest hits” compilation of 130 of my most popular recipes — Chocolate Chili, The Best Chicken Ever, Old School Italian Meat Sauce, Homemade Mayo, Italian Sausage Seasoning — plus basic paleo how-to information and other essays, all pulled from both Well Fed and Well Fed 2.

The magazine is on sale now — in the checkout lane! — of every Whole Foods store in the United States. How exciting is that?!

Plus it’s in other natural foods grocers like Sprouts, Mollie Stone’s, Fresh Market, Natural Grocers, Earth Fare, indie co-ops, and many Barnes and Noble stores, too. (I just got weird from an eagle-eyed blog reader that the magazine is available at Chapters in Canada.)

Because we live in the out yonder of Vermont now, the closest store that’s selling it is 90 minute away; I don’t think we’re going to get to see it in the wild. If you spot the magazine in your store, take a photo and tag me! I’d love to see it in its natural habitat.

If you already own Well Fed or Well Fed 2, you don’t want to buy this magazine because you already have the recipes and info — but it’s a great, inexpensive way to introduce friends and family to paleo concepts and recipes. We agreed to do the magazine because it seemed like such a good way to reach people who aren’t paleo yet, but are looking for a delicious, easy way to improve their health. What better way to reach people than the grocery store checkout lane?!

Here are a few photos of what’s inside…

The most popular recipe in our house; Dave wants to eat it every day.

A big hug of thanks to my pals at Primal Pacs for supporting the magazine with a full-page ad. Primal pacs are one of the most reliable, highest-quality grab-and-go snacks around, and they’re Whole30 approved. They’re good people, and they make a great product.

I would be remiss if I neglected to thank Michel Vrana, our very talented, patient, and delightful design partner. He worked his magic, transforming our original cookbook design into a magazine look-and-feel that makes the recipes jump off the pages. He’s also responsible for the deliciously appealing cover that, I hope, will lure people into exploring the paleo possibilities. As always, deep gratitude to my husband Dave for being my partner in all adventures, big and small.

Congratulations! How exciting for you guys! We don’t have a Whole Foods; will it be available other places eventually? We’ve already got both books but this would be a nice gift to introduce someone to paleo. BTW, kicked off our January Whole30 with Cinnamon Beef Stew (my all-time fave meal, paleo or not) and Chocolate Chili. Thanks for the awesomeness 🙂

  • Rach says:

Congratulations! It’s beautiful! I’ll keep an eye out for it 🙂

  • Amanda Thomas says:

Can we order them online? I have none of those stores near me. I have both your books & love them, and would love to give this magazine to my parents.

    • Right now, there’s no way to order it online. I’m going to check with the publishers to see if I can get them in my store, but right now, it’s just offline retail. Sorry!

  • Suzan says:

I will buy it at my local WF even though I have both of your cookbooks. Gotta support REAL food! 🙂

    Melissa,
Will your magazine be at Market of Choice in Oregon?

Is this a monthly magazine or only a 2 shot?

  • Maia Hurley says:

I’m so excited to see this – I am on Day 2 of my first Whole30 and while I own Well-fed, this magazine is a great way to travel with some recipes when I visit family later this month. Thank you for these resources!

  • Gordon says:

I spied it at the Whole Foods mothership and at Central Market Westgate over the weekend.

  • Kelly says:

That is awesome. If you are going to do something like this regularly I would totally subscribe! Have both of your already!

  • Alice says:

    Congratulations! Looks amazing

  • Beth says:

This is so cool! Even though my copies of Well Fed and Well Fed 2 are well loved and stained, I doubt I’ll be able to resist picking up a copy when I see it at my local Whole Foods. Congrats on such a cool venture and amazing distribution!!

  • Will it be available to buy online at any point for us foreign people? :/

Fantastic news, will it be in the UK Whole Foods?

  • Evy says:

chocolate chile was the second chili at our neighborhood New Years Eve party…veg hostess made her bean and tvp chili which we have all eaten in years past. Chocolate chile was the hit of the evening and 2 people have asked for the recipe!

  • Marcia says:

There is just something about a good old fashioned Print publication. Maybe those are my journalism genes talking … Any who, Love it! Hope there are updates in the future!

  • Peggy says:

How about the PCC Markets in the greater Seattle area?

    Hi Melissa,

Congrats on the magazine it looks fabulous.
How would I get a copy of it down here in New Zealand. I really would love one.

    Thanks
    Jo

  • Candi says:

Melissa you are adorable! I am from Washington State and will tell my local co-op about this. Such a great idea.
I am 67 yrs. old and a friend told me about the Whole30 plan and I am preparing to begin soon. I found you through them and I must say I feel as if I have known you forever. I absolutely love the way you write. I thoroughly enjoy reading your info. and the sense of humor you have.
I have fibromyalgia and other issues that I am dealing with and am looking forward to seeing what this new way of eating will do for me.
Blessing to you my dear and thanks again for all you are doing to help us all stay healthy.

    • Best wishes to you — I hope eating paleo helps with the fibromyalgia. I bet you’ll feel a world of difference after your Whole30! Keep us posted on how you’re doing!

THank you for the sweet words about my writing; I’m so glad you’re enjoying it.

  • Patricia says:

Congratulations!! What a huge achievement! My favourite cook / cookbook author / blogger in the checkout lane! Both your cookbooks taught me how to cook, and my family and friends thank you for it. Any chance that includes Whole Foods in the UK? I’ve been eating your chocolate chili, coleslaw, shepherd’s pie, pad thai… and more during my Whole45 and feeling sooo good. Thank you for all that you do!

  • nalani says:

    It’s a beautiful thing.

  • I AM SO EFFING PROUD OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Buying one immediately.

  • Kathleen says:

Aaaaahhh! This is HUGE and amazing you guys! Big congrats and big love to you and Dave. It looks fabulous – I can’t wait to see (and buy!) it in the checkout lane! XOXO and YAY!

  • Sandra Bijani says:

Awesome! I saw this as I got on to pull up the chocolate chili recipe to make for my daughter’s 25th birthday tomorrow. I also bought the Family Resolution Revolution bundle for her and specifically told her to pull up Well Fed 2.

Guess I’ll head to Whole Foods on my way home tomorrow for a copy of the magazine.

Thank you for all that you do!

  • Shannon says:

Just finished our Chocolate Chili today from Jan 1st…along with your entire Whole30 Week 1 meal plan. It was SO delicious and made week one EASY-peasy!! I’m very excited about this magazine, congratulations!!

  • Chantal says:

Happy face! Finally a magazine worth reading!
Sad face. Because I live in Northern Ontario, Canada where there is not a Whole Foods store anywhere even remotely close to where I live. Can it be purchased online?

  • Judith says:

I too have both of your books, but will have to have a copy of this. Maybe more than one so I can use one as a loaner/gift. Congratulations, and thank your for the fabulous recipes.

  • Michele says:

Way to go!!! I tell everyone about your cookbooks! You are amazing and my hero! Thanks and congratulations! Looking forward to Well Fed ‘3’!

  • Roberta says:

Love both of your cookbooks, Well Fed and Well Fed 2! I am glad I found you and your books! Makes me feel like I really can do the paleo thing.
I also love the mayo recipe but I have only made it right one time. I don’t know what I am doing that is different from the first batch. Is it possible to process it too long? It seems like it has a creamy thickness to it but goes to liquid by the time I get all of the olive oil poured slowly in. Help!! It is so good and such a great base for your salad dressings. Thank you!

  • Tanya Torst says:

Congratulations Mel! That is so awesome! I will share this so all my friends pick it up next time they go to Whole Foods.

  • Melissa says:

Congrats! Fingers and toes crossed this is available at our Whole Foods here in Canada, eh.

    • Shessomelicious says:

For your Canadian fans – I found it at Chapters in Victoria, so there’s a good chance it’s on their shelves nationally. $14.99 Canuck bucks.

  • Liz says:

Is there a way to order online? No convenient whole foods for me.

  • Tiffanie says:

Didn’t get a picture but spotted in the wild at Sprouts in Burbank, CA!

  • Trish says:

Congratulations! I’ve seen the original “Well Fed” cookbook in the Whole Foods here in Richmond, VA and the sight made me smile (and, perhaps, buy it, heh heh).

  • Hollie says:

I am ABSOLUTELY going to buy this for my mom’s birthday. I’m buying her a bunch of kitchen goodies to help her get back to home cooking. Poor woman only has a paring knife!

  • Randi Schwartz says:

Congrats Melissa! I have both your cookbooks and they are fab! Using them for my first Whole30!

  • Eleanor says:

Congratulations! Looks great. The all important question is though: when will Well Fed 3 be published??

  • Gayle says:

I was at my local grocery store yesterday and saw this while walking past the checkouts. I hadn’t seen your posting about it yet and stopped dead in my tracks. The format is gorgeous!!
FYI – The store is Bush’s http://www.buschs.com/ in Novi Michigan. You are appearing out and about in real world stores. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  • oh wow that’s awesome!!
I wish whole foods in the UK would stock it, if so I would be first in line to pick it up!!

  • Tree says:

I know where I’m going on today’s lunchbreak walk…^_^…WF! Thank you!

  • Oh my goodness this looks so awesome! I have both Well Fed books already (Well Fed 2 is by far my favorite cookbook) but I might just buy this anyway! I was in Whole Foods yesterday and didn’t see it – maybe I’ll have to go back today under the guide of buying more kombucha 🙂

  • EmayPA says:

    Congratulations, Mel! It looks gorgeous!

    Happiest of Happy New Year’s!

  • AustinGirl says:

I saw it at Sprouts on Great Hills, here in Austin. Looking goooood!

  • Victoria says:

This is so unbelievably awesome. I can’t believe how far this has come. As a longtime (reeeeally longtime . . .)follower, I remember the “beer and a cookie” comment from a long, long time ago and then see this – – – you are such an inspiration. I think of you with almost every meal I make; that’s how much your experience has meant to me. So congratulations AND thank you for what you have done. And kudos to Dave, of course.

  • GREAT idea to reach the grocery line people. It looks enticing!

  • Judith says:

I am so bummed I went to our local
Whole Foods today to get your magazine, and they didn’t have it. I was hoping to take a photo and send it to you. We are in a small town that is a little remote, so I will keep looking for it and asking each time! I am hoping to make those yummy looking white sweet potato fries today. Thanks again for all the delicious recipes!

    • Judith says:

Update: Today they had your magazine and I bought two. Took a photo and emailed it, but I’m not too good with the smart phone so don’t know if it will get to you or not. Hope so.

  • Alison G says:

Congrats to you both! I have both cookbooks, so I won’t be buying this. I am keeping my eye out for Well Fed three. That I will buy.

  • Jennifer Jordan says:

Saw it at Whole Foods in Fresno, CA today. Had to pick it up. Looks great! As you said I don’t need it because I already have Well Fed and Well Fed 2. Congrats!

  • Joyce says:

Congratulations! I have your books and love them; however, I’m going to buy your mag because it will be a jewel to share.

  • Laura says:

Where was this sort of wonderfulness when I started eating primal/paleo back in 2010???
I have both your books and clutch them to my chest like a bible thumpin’ southern minister. I sing their praises loud and far whenever I can!

  • Diane says:

Congratulations! This is a great idea. I have both of your cookbooks and love them and I’ve been wanting to find a not-so-pushy mother/mother-in-law way to give paleo information to my son and daughter-in-law and this looks like a great start. Thanks, Melissa!

  • NicoleAlyce says:

Congrats! I just wanted to say that you are really a huge motivation for me to change my life for the better. I love your sense of humor and approach to everything. You really have a talent for breaking things down and making this lifestyle doable and enjoyable. Keep spreading the word Melissa!

  • Hillary says:

So I saw this yesterday while at Whole Foods but hadnt yet seen this article and I got nervous that it was a knock-off (since Whole30 people have had some trouble with knock-off materials). Now I wish i had purchased it since I dont have the books, but use your blog most of the time (for my Whole30-ing) and I do like having things on paper!!!

  • Robyn Mizell says:

Melissa, Congratulations on your Well Fed Magazine!! I can’t wait to read it. As I told you I am re-reading Well Fed 1 and 2. Carrying it around like it’s attached to me. 🙂

My first recipe is your Grilled Chicken Thighs. They are on the grill now. Fingers crossed.

Thanks so much!!! All my best to you!!

    Robyn from Atlanta, GA

  • I have both your books…am a big fan….love your recipes. I was excited to see a magazine as well! I’ll tell all my friends and family who are finally getting into Paleo.

  • Just saw this and grabbed it at Whole Foods in Redwood City (SF Bay Area)! Thanks so much for this! I am one of those that is trying to do the Paleo Diet consistently so thanks!

  • Sandy says:

Congratulations Melissa! I spotted the magazine on a rack at the Whole Foods at the Arboretum and I grabbed it without realizing it was yours. It’s great! One question for you: On the bottom left it promises a recipe for Vietnamese Pho but I can’t find it in the magazine – what page is it on? Thanks!

  • Deanna says:

So excited for you! I mean, how cool is that? Just ordered Well Fed I and II also. Can’t wait to get them! Your recipes have kept me on the straight and narrow. The recipes have helped so much with my diabetes. If I eat this way hardly ever have to take insulin anymore. So totally worth it. I haven’t seen much about diabetes and this way of eating. But it totally works.

  • Lynne Clemens says:

I saw the magazine in TWO stores in the Chicago suburbs yesterday:

    Whole Foods in Northbrook, IL
    Sunset Foods in Libertyville, IL

  • Martha Edmundson says:

How exciting! We need more Paleo exposure. I own both Well Fed books, but will definitely look for it in our Natural Grocers here.
    Congratulations on your endeavor!

  • cynthia says:

saw this little beauty at the check out of my local whole foods (SoCal) and was like ‘what the wha!?!?!?’ what a great resource! bought both your books with our first whole30 and used them a little but now on our second whole30 we’re using the books to the max!

  • Patti says:

Congratulations on your magazine! I just wanted to tell you how much my family loves your Italian sausage seasoning recipe. We started a Paleo lifestyle about two years ago and sausage is one of our breakfast favorites. I mix half ground pork, have ground turkey breast and we just form them into 2 oz. patties and freeze so they are easy to pull out and cook in the mornings. I have both of your cookbooks — can’t even count how many of your recipes are favorites at our house. Thank you!

  • Carrie says:

any thoughts on where I can pick this up in Vermont? Healthy living perhaps?

  • Carrie says:

Awesome! I am on my way to healthy living

  • Nancy says:

That’s GREAT Melissa! I have both books, Well Fed is getting Well worn (it’s about 3-4 years old? Was my first Paleo book, bought it after I read “It starts with food”. I think I’ve given at least 6 away as gifts.

  • Sandy Hadley says:

Congratulations on the new mag!! How do I go about getting it? I live in Australia. I have bought both cookbooks and love them and want to get hold of the mag for a friend and I that are doing our first Whole 30 in feb.

    • It should be available on Amazon soon, but I suspect the shipping would be more than the cost of the magazine! Your best bet is to get your friend the cookbooks, honestly. It will be cheaper in the long run, and you get a lot more recipes.

  • Cabrini says:

Have to check Barnes and Noble in Camp Hill PA. We don’t have whole foods or any such great stores…blah! Maybe Wegmans???? Let me know if you know locations in Harrisburg or Camp Hill PA. Thanks and congratulations. This is SOOOO wonderful. Love to see such successes!!!

  • Mel says:

I saw it in Whole Foods here in Seattle (before I read this post) and said, “Hmm this looks familiar!” then I flipped through and realized the recipes were from both WF and WF2, so I didn’t get it – but it’s awesome, and congrats for putting it out on the checkout line!!! 🙂 I hope you sell millions of copies!

  • Pau says:

So here’s the thing – my boyfriend and I have been looking at rings, so pre-engagement phase haven’t even thought about anything wedding related, except one thing – the only thing in the world I want out of a wedding… Is for you to cater my wedding… Pleaaassseee?? Pretty please???

    • I can’t tell if you’re serious or not 😉 But when the time comes, email me and we can at least discuss the possibility.

      • Pau says:

100% serious!! You’ll be hearing from me soon (hopefully donner rather than later….)!!!! Until then… I’ll settle with cooking my own Well Fed meals!

      • Pau says:

100% serious!! You’ll be hearing from me soon (hopefully donner rather than later….)!!!! Until then… I’ll settle with cooking my own Well Fed meals!

      • Pau says:

100% serious!! You’ll be hearing from me soon (hopefully donner rather than later….)!!!! Until then… I’ll settle with cooking my own Well Fed meals!

  • Melissa says:

I see it’s available in some stores in Canada – any idea if there are any retailers in Victoria, British Columbia? We don’t have a Whole Foods, but we do have a fair amount of health food store type dealios.

  • Amy says:

So. This magazine totally changed how I viewed Paleo. Even after doing a Whole30, I wasn’t certain about paleo as a whole. I thought it was too fussy, too self-righteous, not sustainable. And what I learned by your awesome text is that it’s how I want to eat for the rest of my life.

Our stories are so similar. I battled a thyroid condition. I lost 50 pounds on WW. And I still needed MORE. And eating like this is changing my life. You think about food and cooking in the same ways that I do–I love the “you know how you could do that’ sections.

So, here’s a silly and cheesy hug, from me to you. And thanks.

    • I will totally accept a silly and cheesy hug. They’re my favorite kind.

I’m so glad that the magazine is helping you feel like this way is eating is sustainable. YAY! Sorry about your thyroid. Having a bum thyroid is no fun, but eating clean really does help a ton. Happy 2015 to you!

  • Pau says:

100% serious!! Ill get a hold of you when we have a more concrete plan (hopefully sooner rather than later!) until then, I’ll settle for making my own Well Fed meals!

  • Pau says:

Shoot, I kept getting error messages and just realized I replied about 12 times… I blame excitement amnesia… So sorry!

  • Lori L says:

Have you considered publishing monthly or even semi-annually? It would be to see new recipes along with your thoughts together on a regular basis. The magazine format was very helpful and easy to use. Thank you!

    • Absolutely not 😉 A magazine’s deadlines are way too stressful for me. But I’m really glad you like it! I think Paleo Magazine does a really good job, and I’m happy to have them doing the heavy lifting six times a year.

  • How am I just now seeing this? Very cool, congratulations!!

  • Wendy says:

wandered into my local Salt Lake City Whole Foods where I almost never shop, and boom! there it was. How could I not buy it? It’s official now, you are Brilliant.

  • Sherri says:

    Hi!

I am just about to start my Whole30 tomorrow and so happy I found your site! I also ordered your book today on Amazon!

Do you know where I can find the magazine in Canada?

    Thanks!

    • Happy Whole30-ing! Thank you for buying our cookbook!

I don’t know where it’s being sold in Canada — sorry! — but if you have the cookbook, you have a lot of the information already. The magazine is a “greatest hits” of content from both of our cookbooks. Have fun with the new recipes!

      • Sherri says:

I feel like this might be too much since I have soooo much weight to lose – but I am going to try it. I realized this morning that I bought Well Fed 2 instead of the first one – so I ordered that one as well today!

If you do find out where I can get the magazine in Canada that would be great!

  • Noblepower says:

My mom bought it, not realizing at the time that it’s the same content she has in WF & WFII – she really likes the layout and finds it easier for her to use than the books (easier to fold flat and is the print a little larger?) I may buy it as well because I only own WF in digital form, and I don’t enjoy having my e-reader in the kitchen.

  • Melissa says:

Heads up for your Canadian readers – I just found one at Chapters in Victoria, BC. It’s a national Chain (like Barnes & Noble) so there’s a good chance it’s at other locations. $14.99 Canuck bucks. I don’t have the books yet, so I’m extra excited to dive in.

  • Alana Topper says:

HOLY SANTA CLAUSE SHIT!! This is hands down the best magazine I’ve ever read. It’s wonderful!!! My husband and I are just starting our paleo adventure and this magazine is our bible. I found it at Whole Foods (I think I heard sweet sounding harps when I laid eyes on it) and I can’t rave about it enough!! Shopping lists, tips, recipes, beautiful mouthwatering pictures. I’m obsessed.
    THANK YOU!

  • Laura says:

I have both of your cookbooks but I got this magazine as well. I love your cookbooks! Any chance of Well Fed 3?

  • Sherri says:

    Hi there

We were able to pick up the magazine at Chapters in Pointe Claire (Montreal, Quebec)- super excited!

  • Alison G says:

I saw your magazine at Costco today in Northern California.

  • SandyLA90034 says:

Just purchased a copy of the magazine at a Sprouts on Sepulveda Blvd. in Culver City (West Los Angeles). It was sold out at the Whole Foods on National and Barrington, West LA.

It’s going to be hard to give up my Onion-Dill-Rye bread toast with peanut butter with strong coffee in the morning. I’ll have to find another taste ritual.

  • Carol says:

Melissa, I live in a small village in northern Greece. Is there an electronic subscription to your magazine?

    • The magazine is a one-time only publication, and it’s only available in print. I’m sorry!

It’s available on Amazon.com, but I suspect the shipipng to you would be very expensive. You’d be better off getting the PDFs of my cookbooks — they have far more recipes and content than the magazine anyway.

  • Cheryll says:

I’ve bought this magazine in my local Whole Foods Store (in Massachusetts) and I love it! I was wondering if there were going to be others like it. I had heard of the paleo lifestyle previously and I was not interested in the least until I saw this magazine. I’ve already made several recipes from it and shared some with a friend at work. So…will there be others??
