Sassy Sage Suffers Self-Doubt

Sage over at Strive To Be Fergilicious had a rough workout yesterday, too. I like what she had to say about it.

“… we were doing these workouts from hell and I found myself slowly start to slip into my normal ‘I’m really doing bad. I’m getting a horrible time. I’m feeling sorry for myself’ mode. I could feel myself falling farther and farther into that negative mindset and before I knew it, the workout was over and I didn’t have time to snap out of it and ‘man-up’ and switch back into thinking positive. So, the workout was over and I was stretching… and I was feeling disappointed not so much in my performance, but in myself for letting all that doubt and negativity consume me.”

My Post-Angie Update:
Thanks to Nyquil and a big dose of Natural Calm, I slept 9.5 hours last night – and I was able to lie flat! I had just one coughing fit around 2:30 a.m…. other than that, I slept soundly. What a difference a good night’s sleep makes!

My abs are a little tender, and my biceps are very aware I did pullups yesterday, but I’m not hobbled. Whew.

I thoroughly enjoyed my mellow morning: made a spinach omelet, drank chamomile tea, watched a little of a silly morning news show… now I’m ready to tackleCrossFit Women tomorrow in what promise to be frigid temperatures. Yay, Under Armor Cold Gear.

Sometimes you have bad workouts…just don't have 2 of them in a row…

I am hobbled. Kind of embarrassingly so at work 🙂 I can't lift my arms over my head. I can't fully extend my arms in front of me. And the sick part of me is relishing every torturous moment! Can't wait to tackle something new with you in the freezing morning.

It's tough to bounce back after a mentally grueling workout. You're definitely tough enough to deal though!

I was just telling my Dave tonight (I should mention that I am also a Melissa with a Dave!) that we need to add more spinach with our diets. So please tell me more about your spinach omelet!

Uh-oh! TWO Dave & Melissas. We should have a double dat!

My "omelet" was not pretty, but it was delicious. And people who really know how to make omelets will cringe when they read this.

I thawed a bag of frozen, chopped spinach, then put it in a really hot pan and let it cook until it was pretty dried out and starting to get little brown bits.

I kept one cup in the pan and put the rest in the fridge for my lunch tomorrow. I added a teaspoon of olive oil to the pan and when the spinach was shiny, I sprinkled it with salt and garlic powder.

Then I cracked in two whole eggs and one egg white. I don't like my eggs scrambled, but I like the yolks broken, so I poked the yolks with a fork and moved 'em around a little to spread them out. Then I put a lid on the pan and turned the heat to medium.

When the eggs were set, I flipped it to brown the other side. It was like an omelet-pancake-fritter thing. There were nice brown bits and the spinach gets kinda sweet. It was BIG, and I ate it like an animal.

A little off topic I guess, but does the Natural Calm work well for you? I have a little trouble getting to sleep each night and was looking for something to help with that. I heard about the Natural Calm on one of Robb Wolf's podcasts and thought about trying it but wanted to maybe get someone else's opinion first.

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

Wayne, I've had a good experience with Natural Calm once I worked out the dosage. The directions recommend starting with a reduced serving size, and when I did that, my sleep was interrupted and I had terrible dreams. As an experiment, I tried the 'advanced use' dose, which is a heaping tablespoon. That works great! I fall asleep gently about half an hour after I take it, and I sleep through the night. No grogginess in the morning. As an added bonus, "movement" becomes very regulated…

  • Wayne says:

OK, cool. Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated. I'll give it a shot.

  • Wayne says:

Oh one more question. It looks like there are a couple of different types. Magnesium, magnesium/calcium, etc. Do you mind me asking which one take?

  • Melissa 'Melicious' Joulwan says:

Wayne, this is the one I take. Raspberry Lemon flavor. http://www.vitacost.com/Peter-Gillham-Natural-Calm I get it at our local Sprouts store.
