This Thanksgiving, I'll be starting the day with meditation, then watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It's all about balance, people. Then later in the...

Ah, Tabata… how can 20 seconds feel so long, and 10 seconds seem so short?!
[Which reminds me of a Social Distortion song… “Minutes seem like hours / And days seem like weeks / How could a year last so f*cking long?” Check it out: “When She Begins” from the one of the greatest albums ever Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.]
Anyway, back to rock star workouts…
My day started at 4:15 when I woke up to feed the cat and wondered why I was sweaty. The A/C was off because the power was out! I stumbled through the completely dark house to feed Sesame and tried not to think of CSI episodes while I used the bathroom in the pitch black. (There could be someone in the shower, and I would have absolutely no idea! [hair on neck stands on end])
I arrived at CrossFit Central at 5:30 a.m. for my fat caliper-tape measure check-in: body fat stayed the same, 1/2 inch gone from hips and 1/4 inch gone from shoulders. Not too bad for six weeks that included a vacation (pina coladas!) and a family visit. (mmm… popcorn at Sea World.)
I have a secret: I love tabata. It’s torture, but in that fun, inspiring, ‘this is so crazy it’s awesome’ way. I was frexcited when I saw the whiteboard:
Tabata Something Else
8 rounds :20 on / :10 rest, 45-lb. barbell
- back squat
- hang clean
- push press
- sumo deadlift high pull
My numbers:
back squat: 11 – 11 – 11 – 10 – 9 – 10 – 11 – 11
hang clean: 8 – 8 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 7 – 7 – 8
push press: 11 – 10 – 9 – 9 – 9 – 9 -9 -9
sumo deadlift high pull: 9 – 8 – 7 – 7 – 6 – 6 – 7 – 7
In case you’re not familiar with Dr. Tabata and his ass-kicking, kickass protocol, here’s some more info for you:
- my earlier exploration of the mysterious Dr. Tabata
- all my previous posts about tabata workouts
- a blog I just discovered devoted to the tabata protocol
- an article with a nice snarky touch: “It helps to have someone record the reps of each set for you because, well, you won’t remember after you pass out.”

I looove tabata too, and the pain that it brings the morning after 🙂 Those are some freakin' awesome numbers girl. I'm gonna be joining you next week in Crystal's indoor class! Yay!
Hooray! Can't wait to see you in the early, EARLY a.m.!
Thanks for saying what I couldn't this morning!
Tabata and I do not get along as well and you and Tabata do.
I usually turn into the Hulk when I am hungry but on Paleo it is so different. So thankful!
Hey! We did Tabata something Else yesterday too! I got a 359. Still have to modify my pushups because I'm rehabbing my shoulder – but I was super stoked that I did the pullups with the blue band! So stoked that today, I did our warm up with the red band – which one of our instructor's simply calls 'the crutch'. He says if we can do 'em with the red band, we should be able to do them alone! But I too LOVELOVELOVE me some tabata! I did them the first time a couple weeks ago in Kettlebells and liked them so much, in that weird masochistic way of ours, that I instantly decided my pump class the next morning would LOVELOVELOVE them as much as I. So I went home, did my research, made the class (no pullups for globogym group ex class! Subbed lunges instead. Wheeeee..fun!) and went to bed that night giddy with excitement about the next day. Which came…with DOMS! Did I even think ahead about the joy I was about to experience as I did tabata squats, push ups and sit ups two days in a row? haha! But I made it through – and they all loved it, though they all told me they couldn't walk for two days after. So yesterday was the first day I did actual tabata in Crossfit and I hated/loved it just as much as Kettlebell tabatas! We're such sick people, aren't we?! And I'm sorry I wrote a book. I tend to ramble! I need a rambler's anonymous!
