Rants & Raves: 10 January 2020

It’s been ages since I posted my favorite links each week, but this year, I’m bringing it back! Buckle up for some of the best stuff I read online recently.

I finally got to see Knives Out last night. It just opened here in Czechia, and it was everything I hoped it would be! So twisty and funny and atmospheric. For enthralling manor house stories on the page, you could go Gothic with moody houses and haunted heroines — classic tales with beautiful writing — 20th-century stories from between the wars — or modern settings with ties to the past.

Feels like we an all relate to this carrot contemplating its existence, no?

This is very handy right now: 5 Quick and Simple Practices to Relax Your Body.

Anne Bogel — of Modern Mrs. Darcy and the What Should I Read Next? podcast — has a new book coming out March 3. It’s called Don’t Overthink It, and I was privileged to provide an endorsement blurb. This book is great! The perfect addition to your toolbox of wrangling your mind so you can live your best life. Good news: The pre-order bonuses have arrived!

I would legit wear any of these vintage bathing suits, but especially the striped ones.

I would not, however, wear many of these wigs. (But I’m so glad that Moira does.)

Ken Jennings is the best Jeopardy! champion. (I will not be taking any questions or making further statements at this time.)

This is a whopper of an opening, and the article continues on in compelling fashion: Americans — hyper-health-conscious and profoundly gluttonous — spent the decade bingeing on salad.

This car-load of koalas is so very, very cute, and I want to cuddle all of them. But the reason for this cuteness is heart-breaking. Here’s a list of animal-related charities in Australia, if you have the capacity to help a little.

Before you go — recipe recommendations: You could let the slow cooker do the work for this Mississippi Beef or the get a soft landing for the day from this Classic Paleo Beef Stew. Transform ground chicken into Tod Mun Chicken Cakes or Fried Chicken Meatballs. Maybe take a culinary trip to India with Rogan Josh or this super-easy South Indian Curry. Or get in a soup-er mood (sorry) with Italian Vegetable Soup (I cook it as described in the recipe, then brown ground pork with garlic, salt, and pepper, to add to the bowl of soup — along with fresh herbs — when it’s time to eat), Mulligatawny Stew, or Paleo Chicken & Dumplings.
