Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves

When we started Smudge Publishing, Dave and I made the commitment to donate some of the proceeds from the sales of our books to organizations that we think are doing great work. With the original Well Fedwe donated to Common Threads, whose mission is to educate children on the importance of nutrition and physical well-being, and to foster an appreciation of cultural diversity through cooking.

With Well Fed 2, we supported the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, an organization devoted to getting clean cookstoves and cooking fuels into the kitchens in developing countries that need them most.

The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is a public-private partnership led by the United Nations Foundation to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and protect the environment by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. The Alliance’s goal is for 100 million households to adopt clean cookstoves and fuels by 2020. The Alliance is working with hundreds of public, private, and nonprofit partners to help overcome the market barriers that currently impede the production, deployment, and use of clean cookstoves and fuels in developing countries.

Almost three billion people in the developing world cook their food and heat their homes with traditional cookstoves or open fires. Smoke exposure from these cooking and heating methods is responsible for two million premature deaths every year. Women and children — cooking the food and tending to the home — are the most affected by the smoke exposure.

Thanks to you, we just donated $2200.00 to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. Thank you for buying our cookbook and helping us support this organization. I like to think about the families that will enjoy meals together, cooked on the stoves made a reality by the Alliance.
