Whole30: Day 8 Recap

From August 1 through August 23, I’m documenting my Whole30, including the when, what, where, and how much of my sleep, activity, food, and mood. Read about why I’m doing the Whole30 right here. Not familiar with the Whole30? Learn all about it here and get extra help with the Whole30 Daily.

Whole30: Day 8

And we’re back… The fog of yesterday lifted, and I had a pretty good day. I didn’t write the chapter I was supposed to write, but that wasn’t because I couldn’t do it — it was because I got caught up doing other stuff. Fun stuff. Super top secret stuff. Not really.

Sleep
7.5 hours — 10:30 to 6:00, plus a 2-hour (!) nap yesterday

Activity
Walk: I hit the trail early this morning because the weather forecast said it was going to top 100F this afternoon. Four miles around the lake in 65 minutes. Bonus awesomeness: My shirt was on inside out the entire time. Classy!

Meditation: 21 minutes of Jack Kornfield sitting meditation before bed.

Food
I’ve found my appetite is less ravenous, and I feel better if I eat in a 11-hour window — usually between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. so I can stop eating about 2-3 hours before going to bed — and don’t snack between meals or before bed. Because I’m dealing with my thyroid experiment, I’m measuring and tracking my food right now. I aim for 40% fat, 30% protein, 30% carbs.

Breakfast, 8:00 a.m.
4 ounces homemade Romanian sausage
2 cups chopped collard greens
1 cup roasted eggplant
1 teaspoon coconut oil + Turkish seasoning

Lunch, 1:30 p.m.
Firebowl Cafe (gluten-free menu):
4 ounces beef + broccoli, zucchini, onions, bell peppers + lemongrass basil sauce
tossed salad w/ creamy garlic dressing
1/2 banana + 1 teaspoon Sunbutter (at home)

Dinner, 8:00 p.m.
egg foo yong: 2 eggs, 2 ounces chicken thighs, 1 cup chopped broccoli, 3 scallions, 1/2 cup sweet potato cooked in 1 teaspoon coconut oil + 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
1/2 cucumber
1/2 cup blueberries

Mood
Good! Pretty chipper. I kinda felt like I was just let out of jail after the horrible day I had yesterday.

Photo of the Day
My dinner… with bonus Smudge. (Not quite as pretty as the photo in Well Fed, but those cookbook egg foo yong patties were supermodels.)

Song of the Day
Beautiful Am I
, Aykanna

Robin played “Beautiful Am I” in our kundalini class last night, and I totally fell in love with it… “Beautiful am I / Bountiful am I / Blissful am I.” Nice, right?! (And now I just found this remix. Might need to add it to my kundalini collection, too.) Unfortunately, there’s no video for “Beautiful Am I,” but here’s a video of “Beautiful Day” to get in touch with your groovy side. I totally encourage you to click on that “Beautiful Am I” link so you can hear that song.

How was your Day 8?

WOOHOO! I just completelyl my day one! I didn’t get quite enough sleep, but I managed to stay have a really productive day at work! Today is my second day, but my 1st official day! no slip ups! On to the next!

  • Cas says:

I think you should’ve used this photo for the cookbook. Smudge is such a cutie!

  • Alicia K says:

Homemade Romanian sausage sounds delish. Is this your creation? If so, can you share?

My sugar cravings were really pesky today. Could have something to do with hormones this week. It was all I could do not to constantly think about how much I wanted to indulge in some dark chocolate. I settled for a scoop of almond butter and a few raisins instead.

Really appreciate you recapping each of your days Melissa! It’s something I look forward to reading each night.

    • Mel says:

The Romanian Sausage is a recipe I’m working on for Well Fed v2.0… it’s not quite there yet. Still tweaking spices.

I’m glad you’re finding my recaps helpful! It’s been a great exercise for me, too.

  • Tom R. says:

I know weight-loss probably isn’t your main goal, but that’s some clean living there with fairly small portions. As long as you feel good, get it. If you get a little sluggish, up some of that intake (IMO) especially on Wendler days.

    • Mel says:

Yeah… I’m at about 1400-1500 calories per day. I’d love to be eating more, but with my thyroid wackiness, I get nervous about taking in too many calories. My metabolism is so jacked up.

In September, I’m having my basal metabolic rate tested, so I’ll have a better idea of how many calories I should be taking in. For now, I’m just going by how I feel — and that changes daily, based on how well my hormonal systems are behaving.

Science. what a pain in the butt!

  • Amanda says:

oh smudge – seriously – hahahaha… ‘catspread’ – the art of insertion of your cat self where it probably doesn’t belong and challenging others to try and move you….. (points for ‘catheavy’ and ‘awcuteness’)…

  • Kelly R says:

Thanks for the suggestions for paleo eating while you are sick. When I got home, I promptly made zucchini noodles in broth. I ate it again for breakfast. And I felt good after eating it both times. I’m back on the road to recovery!

Now comes the hard part – ignoring the naughty things after being completely ravenous for 3 days!

  • Teri M. says:

Glad you had a good day!

  • N says:

Too funny… yesterday was my day 9, and I crashed for two hours as well. After going to bed at 8:30 the night before!

Today woke up at five ready to go. Go figure.

Loving the recaps, thank you for posting!

  • Karen says:

Your shirt was on inside out the whole time walking around the lake! Well at the end of my 630 am crossfit class today I discovered my pants were on inside out. Glad I’m as awesome as you. Ha, thats what happens when you’re half asleep getting dressed.

  • Hannah says:

I’m loving reading your recap along with my own first whole30. Day 4 and counting! Hoping to get rid of or significantly reduce my husband’s arthritis!

  • Alison says:

What will you do with Smudge while you are traveling? And what is Smudge’s diet? haha I really like that song, both of them actually. I just added that cd to my wish list next time I put an order in.

  • Andrea says:

The WF Egg Foo Yong is one of my favorite recipes from the cookbook… I change it up with different proteins all the time…pulled pork is my current fav. It makes my list of favorites as well as my “OMG I’m starving and I must have a meal right now” list. Simple to prepare and so flavorful! Can not wait for WF V2!!!
