Oh, the internet! It gets me all riled up with dire news and mainstream idiocy, then blammo! it hits me with something so awesome, it must be shared. Welcome to a new collection of Rants & Raves!

Rants, Or… Why Is the World So Disappointing Sometimes?

Definitely not “puttin’ on the Ritz.
A Canadian mom sent her kids to daycare with “leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk” but no grains — and was subsequently fined $10. Read about the outrage here.

Nope! Not gonna eat it.
Experts like an endocrinologist, toxicologist, farmer, cancer researcher, and more weigh in on foods they definitely will not eat. Read the list.

Why do boys get the (metabolic) breaks?
This piece from the Tabata Times does a great job of explaining the metabolic differences between men and women — and why we ladies can’t train exactly like the boys do to get the same results. Read all about it.

Raves, Or… Let’s Celebrate These Awesome Things!

It is a precious resource.
I love this reminder from my pal Hilah to try to conserve water in the kitchen. Both California and Texas are in pretty dire drought conditions right now, along with much of the central parts of the U.S. But even if things weren’t especially dry, it’s never a good idea to just let a precious commodity like water just run down the drain. Read Hilah’s kitchen tips.

Laughter really is the best medicine.
What Should We Call Paleo Life is silly and entertaining and takes, like, 1 second of your life to enjoy. That makes it pretty fantastic in my book. See the silliness.

Consider sweet potatoes.
And plantains and yucca and jicama. I love this post on from Robb Wolf’s blog called ‘Females, Carbohyrates, and Hormones.’ So much of the paleo advice that’s shouted loudest is about the low-carb version of paleo, but as so many of us are finding, there isn’t one version of paleo that works for everyone. And if you’re female and not feeling your awesomest, you might need a few more carbs. Read all about it. (And for more on this topic, I like this post, too.)

Armchair (time) travel.

I’m enthralled by these two books right now. I recently finished The Golem and The Jinni, and I’m 75% of the way through The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. I didn’t plan it this way, but reading the two books back-to-back has been a thematic and delightful double feature of beautiful language, romance, WWII history, adventure, and fantasy. I heartily recommend both books.

Read The AA of K&C last year & loved it. I care not a WHIT about comic books (which plays a huge part in book), but, oh, the beautiful writing & story telling! Downloaded The G & The J last year but didn’t get around to reading it; with your rec will bump it up on my to-read list. Thanks!

My husband is an illustrator, so comics are a big deal in our house! I enjoyed those part of the book but really loved the Prague/golem bits a lot. Enjoy The Golem and The Jinni!

The carbs post really hit home with me. I was vegan for two years before switching to paleo, and have had a plethora of hormone problems. I have been trying to keep my carbs in the 20% range, but think I need to amp it up. Bring on yellow hands!

I actually just read the carb post before I came to your blog. My trainer has been trying to convince me to increase my carb intake, which can be as low as 40 to 50 grams on some days…mostly green vegetables. It’s hard to know what is right. I do think that it is different for everyone. Since I am working out a lot, eating clean and not seeing the results I think I should, I am going to start tracking my carb intake more closely.

    • Mel says:

I’m at about 100g per day, and about half of that is starchy carbs. I noticed I’m definitely feeling better during my workouts and I’ve finally started losing some weight. Eating more carbs is definitely working for me right now — but paleo kind of requires tinkering from time to time. Good luck with experimentation!

      • Lynn M says:

100 grams is my target right now, with some adjustment for fiber intake. I have noticed that my emotional well being is improving. Also, combined with more rest time, I am already down 1.8% body fat in two week (sign of reduced inflammation). I am still trying to be more consistent with calorie intake and with rest time from the gym (they tell me I work out way too much)

Thanks for your response. It is good to know that I am not alone on this.

I love Kavalier and Clay! So glad you’re enjoying it.
