Fave Things: Hilah’s Texas Kitchen

hilah

I’ve gushed to you about my ridiculously awesome pal Hilah Johnson before — when she and I cooked up some vampire fighting pork stew for Halloween and when she released her adorably helpful cookbook Learn To Cook. If she wasn’t so smart and funny and completely endearing, she would be totally annoying because she is a dynamo that is always up to something cool.

Her latest adventure — with her equally charming/smart/talented/etc./etc. partner Christopher Sharpe —  is the delightful online show Hilah’s Texas Kitchen. Check out the promo video, then we’ll chat some more…

As a seventh generation Texan, Hilah wanted to highlight  the fact that there’s more to Texas than cowboy hats and Longhorns.  “I wanted to show the diversity of our food – the Mexican, German, Cajun, Czech cultures we have here…,” says Hilah. “We visited a grapefruit farmer in the Valley, a shrimping family in Port Aransas, a couple of dairy goat farmers and cheese makers. We delved into the Austin breakfast taco scene, explored puffy tacos in San Antonio, replicated the beef ribs at Black’s Barbeque in Lockhart. We even covered German Chocolate Cake, which was made famous by a Dallas housewife.”

The show’s episodes run from five to seven minutes, so they’re perfect for a quick hit of inspiration and a few giggles, too. Take two parts Hilah-telling-corny-jokes, mix with 1 part native Texas hardcore cooks, and finish with a sprinkle of Hilah cookin’ in her home kitchen so you can recreate the authentic Texas grub in your own house… and that’s the deliciousness of the new show.

The first episode gets deep into the meaty heart of Texas: BBQ. (Prepare for some serious paleo meat porn.)

Hilah’s Texas Kitchen is part of the Tastemade Network — which has some other tasty online shows, too — and will be running all summer with 12 luscious installments of travel and recipes. Watch the episodes and subscribe on YouTube so you’ll never miss an episode.

  • Hi Melissa, I am Hilah’s #1 gusher (wait, is that a word?) in Florida, and I totally agree with you, she is awesome! She had me from last year when I watched her video on red beans and rice. She is funny, intelligent, beautiful, talented, and the totally camera loves her. She appeals to cooks and learning-to-be-cooks of all ages. When she puts out a new video, I grab a cold beer and take it all in. She has a bright, no, BLAZING future.

Way better than some of the shows on The Travel Channel or The Food Network. Charming, great music, nice video work!

Thanks for sharing Hilah Cooking. I just watched her promo and checked out her website, and already I love her. I am all about her cheap and made-from-scratch recipes.

Wow – sounds really interesting! I can’t watch the videos since I’m at work, but the picture of the ribs on the second video had me hooked! I loooovee ribs…hard to find good quality ones to buy here. I will have to do some research into that!
