Friday Amusements

Even now, when I don’t have the corporate overlords cracking the whip, I like to “waste” time on Fridays by looking at some fun stuff. Here are three things to make your Friday a little more visually interesting.


The Big Picture has photos from the 2012 Photo Contest in National Geographic Traveler Magazine. These are two of my favorites, but you really need to go look at all of them. They’re so evocative, it’s like taking a mini adventure with each one. Don’t miss the last photo on the page; it’s really something special.

This has been making the rounds this week, so you might have seen it already: 21 Images That Will Restore Your Faith In Humanity. Number six really got me.


McDonald’s Canada posted a behind-the-scenes video of how the burgers in McDonald’s commercials are prepared for their closeups. When Dave and I were preparing for Well Fed, we read several books about food photography and food styling. For many commercial products, non-edible ingredients often stand in for food — for example, white glue instead of milk in cereal ads. We were 100% committed to making the food in Well Fed just as the recipe describes, then photographing it. No tricks! It’s somewhat reassuring to learn that McDonald’s photography also uses real food… or as “real” as McDonald’s gets, anyway.

    Oh, yeah! Number 6 is something. Others made me cry, too, and I tend to think I’m pretty tough. Guess I was wrong. This is perfect for a Friday afternoon as I wait for my workday to end. Our airconditioning went out yet again, and with no cross-ventilation, I’m definitely less than productive.

    I just made your mayonnaise recipe. I don’t need it today, I just thought it would be good to have on hand.
    I was able to get a room temperature egg easy and without the wait: I walked out to the barn, the hen hopped off the nest when she saw me, I collected the eggs and viola! mayo was made.
    Thanks for the PDF. I have seen quite a few paleo cookbooks in the last two weeks and find it all a bit overwhelming. Really seeing yours made me decide it is the one I want to buy. I am on Day 14 of my first Whole30 and am excited to see where this journey takes me. I am also really tired of cold salads and meat. Thanks for the variety and the meal planning tips!

      Me too! I’m on day 20 and can barely take it any more, I am so tired of meat! I just ordered well fed and I can’t wait to read it and get some new vegetable ideas! Thank you so much!

      I hope this wears off soon because I feel like a f-ing linebacker…or a big fat greasy piece of meat stomping around in little black shoes, especially in the summer it’s kind of heavy feeling and my clothes feel gross. I want the light happy skinny feeling everyone talks about…I hope it’s not a lie! Bring on day 30 🙂

      Congratulations on your Whole30. It’s a big undertaking, but so so so good. You’re halfway to glory! All of the Well Fed recipes except one dessert are compliant with the Whole30, so you can eat anything in it without worrying about your new habits. Happy eating to you!

    Hi. I just entered Paleo town and bought your book based on some random reviews online. I made your ‘Best Chicken You Will Ever Eat’ and thought I would re-iterate your words as well as anyone’s who has ever or will ever make this chicken. It’s good. Its damn good. It’s so good I think I moaned. It’s so good, I said a couple swear words. I know, you’re smiling and thinking “this chick is serious and a little over the top, perhaps” (I’ve assumed you use the word ‘perhaps’). The truth is I’m just so pleased to find a recipe that’s easy and DELICIOUS that I feel a little extra is in order. I’m quite excited to try the rest of your recipes. Thankyou for sharing your background and understanding of food with the rest of us.
