We also had a handful of “heated discussions” about the mayo photo… I chopped a seemingly infinite amount of fresh parsley… we endured more than 60 days of 100+ temperatures… and through 99.99% of all of it, Smudge – the newly-appointed CEO of Smudge Publishing, LLC – looked like this:

And this…

But now we have Well Fed to share with you. And we’re delighted. We hope you are, too!

Thank you for your enthusiasm and energy throughout the creative and publishing process. Now go get a copy and start rattling some pots and pans!

  • Rachel says:

About to buy…but first must ‘awwww’ over the most adorable CEO ever.

    • Mel says:

Gah! She is adorable and fuzzy, but worst. CEO. ever!

Good thing she has that belly to distract us from calling an emergency board meeting.

  • Mel says:

Thank you, everyone, for your purchases (YAY!) and the well wishes. Have fun cooking!

  • Ann says:

Yea, Mel! Can’t wait to start cooking from it! Congrats! (So typical of a CEO, they look good while you do all the work! LOL)

  • Svend says:

Appears the cat has the qualities everyone looks for in an executive during times of crisis – calm, resolute, focused on the important tasks at hand.

    Book enroute.

    Congratulations.

  • Merry Christmas to me! Buying this as soon as I get home, since I’m on my work computer right now… ‘working’ =D

  • Kathy says:

  • Amanda Arthur says:

Hooray! Now to wait for my copy to arrive December 27th… luckily there is shopping, gift wrapping and family mayhem to keep me distracted 🙂 Congratulations again, Mel – you look deliriously happy in your weekend cookbook celebration pictures!

  • katetastrophee says:

Yay! Ordered. I’ll have to admit on having a bit of a lady-crush on the whole Meliverse ever since Chicken Bastila came into my life and it’s even okay with my husband since his dinners have become more worldly since then. I’ve made the chicken dish a couple of times now (so so delicious) and it’s on my Christmas Eve menu. Thank you for everything you and your hard working CEO do.

    • Mel says:

Um, I might love the idea of a Meliverse. Holy cow! You made my day.

So glad you like the recipes. And the idea that Smudge is hardworking will have me laughing until I go to bed tonight. She’s currently holding court on a purple cushion, with her eyes at half mast.

  • Tom R. says:

    Sweet.

  • Bethany says:

Congrats to the Well Fed team! I cannot wait to see it and make my first recipe!!

  • KimA says:

    Congrats!

  • MelissaG says:

Yay! So excited! Congratulations! I just bought my copy on Amazon. Is the PDF-for-a-buck deal available with an Amazon purchase, too, or only if we buy from your site? If so, how do I get the code (’cause I can’t wait ’til the book arrives in the mail!)

    • Mel says:

The PDF code is printed in the back of the hard copy of the book — all versions of the hard copy will include it. I’m super excited about Common Threads!

  • Blake says:

Got it! So happy for you guys and can’t wait to see the finished product in all its glory. Truly a year for celebration. xoxo

  • Taylor K says:

Congratulations! Can’t wait to try these recipes! I am adding this to my Christmas wish list.

  • Peggy says:

Is it available in Austin anywhere?

    • Mel says:

Not yet. We’re considering Book People, but we haven’t worked out the details yet. Soon, you’ll be able to get a copy directly from me, but I don’t even have my boxes of books yet. Right now, CreateSpace and Amazon have them all!

  • Candice says:

I would buy a ‘Well Fed’ tee if you had a tee store. And one for my husband and 6 yr old.

    -C

  • Brittany says:

    Ordered from CreateSpace – yahoo!

  • Ehsa says:

OMG … I just got the PDF via your store. So exciting about the book! the recipes! But I gotta tell you it’s worth the price of admission just to see the Smudge Publishing logo in the upper lefthand corner of the screen … bravo!

I’m also going to get the paperback, but createspace won’t let me create an account because “that email address is already registered” (I never created an account with them), but if they are using my Amazon account, they won’t take my Amazon password. Further research is required …

Congratulations to you and your team! Super job!

    • Mel says:

Thank you, Ehsa! Did you see your quote on the Italian Sausage & Eggplant Strata yet?!

Sorry you’re having trouble with CreateSpace. It should just use your Amazon sign-in info, I think. Let me know if you continue to have trouble and Dave can look into it.

Smudge is so excited, she’s clawing the curtains. Our CEO has issues.

  • Sigi says:

Congratulations, Mel. It looks absolutely fantastic! We can see how much effort went into the book, and it’s well and truly paid off.

Great to see you got such a positive review from Jimmy Moore too – hopefully that will help in spreading the word.

  • Tami C. says:

I was going to wait until after Christmas to order the book (budget concerns, I actually have to buy things for OTHER people this month), but after downloading the pdf I just had to get it. Oh well, there are a few people on my Christmas list that probably deserve a lump of coal anyway.

    Kidding! (maybe)

Anyway, it looks FANTASTIC and I can’t wait for it to arrive!

  • Congratulations Melissa! The dinner tables of the world are happier places because of you!

  • George says:

I just bought 2 copies directly from your store on CreateSpace, which has much more reasonable shipping to Canada than Amazon US does, but I just wanted to mention that you should definitely also put it on Amazon.ca soon!

  • Sarah V. says:

I’m so excited about your new book. It looks to be awesome. Any plans to release a Kindle version? I see that you have a PDF ebook, but those take up a lot of space on my Kindle and I don’t buy hard copies anymore.

  • Andrea says:

The PDF sample looks awesome! I might wait until after Christmas (if I can wait that long), but I most definitely will be picking up a copy of your cookbook. Congratulations on getting it all done and published! And thanks again for all your wonderful, tasty recipes. (And while I’m here, thanks also for your book recommendations…I recently read and enjoyed both The Shadow of the Wind and Miss Peregrine’s… because of you!)

  • Chelsea W. says:

Just wanted to post a HUGE congrats on your book going on sale. I looked at the preview and i was SO impressed at how friendly it was, that I decided to buy it for my (very non-dino chow) in-laws before even buying a copy for myself (though mine will be bought shortly)! Great job, Mel!

    • Mel says:

Thank you, Chelsea! I love the idea of giving it to non-paleo eaters and winning them over ’cause it’s just yummy food. Happy holidays to you! And thanks so much for the support!

  • ARC says:

YAY! I’ve been stalking this for about a month, so I couldn’t wait and just bought it from Amazon directly 🙂 woohoo! It says Dec 21, but I’m hopeful that it’ll show up sooner.

  • Amy says:

OMG! Soooooo excited! Just peaked at the sample and it looks beeeeeautiful! I can’t decide if I should get the real book or the ebook…..

  • Stacey says:

I just made my holiday gift purchases. Well, and one for myself. I will be so happy to be able to throw out my stained, water damaged print outs!

  • Mom says:

Hi Sweetie, Even though I held your proof copy in my own two hands last weekend in Austin, I can’t wait to get my “hot off the press” copy of “Well Fed.” It’s coming today from Amazon! Your entire family here in PA is very anxious to see it. The hard work you and Dave put into this labor of love is evident in every single page. Enjoy the success you so richly deserve. Dad and I are so proud of you and love you very much. Mabrook!

    • Mel says:

      Thanks, Mommy!

We’re having fun, watching all the comments and finally being done with production. WHEW! Have fun reading your new copy!

I ordered one from Amazon, too, and now it’s on my cookbook shelf, next to my other favorites. SO fun!

  • Sue says:

Shoot, just bought it on Amazon! Did not know I could buy it from you…can’t wait!!

  • Congratulations on the book Melissa!

I’m so excited that it came out just in time for Christmas – I just ordered a copy for myself, and one for my brother, who is considering making the conversion from a primarily vegetarian diet to a Paleolithic one. I downloaded the sample PDF, and love the way that you spell out the basics in a way that is fun and entertaining to read! Although I haven’t seen the whole thing yet, it looks like this will be a great 1st cookbook for those that are just “testing the Paleo waters”, but also great for those seasoned hunters and gatherers that are looking for some new and exciting recipes.

Can’t wait till my copy gets here 🙂

    • Mel says:

Christie! It’s so great to hear from you… YAY!

Thanks for ordering Well Fed. It’s awesome that your brother is thinking about making the switch. I hope the cookbook helps make his decision a little easier.

Merry Christmas to you and yours! Hope you have a really great 2012.

  • Marjie Scheib says:

So excited, just got the free sample. And will order my soft cover copy and a couple as presents for upcoming birthdays. Cannot wait to start cooking up some of the recipes. My New Year’s resolution is that I will prepare at a minimum of 5 recipies within a month from any new cookbook I purchase! I am kinda of addicted to cookbooks and blogs! Merry Christmas-Happy 2012

  • Andrea says:

I am so excited about this! Not that I’m buying it right away (no moolah atm)…but I will someday! It looks like the most amazing cookbook ever!

  • barb says:

Mel just got mine yesterday – poured over it last night and while i ate breakfast this morning – its FAB! Love the extras, humor, graphics, family stories but especially the whole blueprint about the logistics and sanity for eating like this. Hot plates is my new mantra. One question what do your weekday breakfasts look like these days? (esp for leptin reset) and do you do any preprep for them?

Off to do my first cooking WOD challenge!

    • Mel says:

Barb, I still eat Hot Plates for breakfast almost every day. The only things that’s changed is the proportion and volume of the food on my plate. I usually replace one of the leafy or cruciferous veggies with a sizeable serving (3/4 to 1 cup) of butternut squash, and I reduce the coconut oil to about 1 teaspoon. That ups the carbs and lowers the fat. So this week, I mostly ate diced chicken breast with butternut squash and either chopped steam-sauteed broccoli (or cabbage or beet greens) with seasonings. Lots of Ras El Hanout this week ’cause I was in the mood, but Tsardust Memores from Penzeys is also good on this particular combo. Last week, I did half the chicken and added a few eggs for fun. The Hot Plates are so flexible — they’re really meal-savers!

  • pamela says:

I was so excited to see a cookbook that I would be able to use without dissecting every recipe. I love that that, but I was delighted with your Hot Plate concept. I’m strictly Paleo and my husband would happily eat vegetarian fare 90% of the time. Meal preparation has gotten insane. This could be a lifesaver for me. (Not so much him if keeps favoring legumes and grains and complaining about meat and fat.) But I digress, using the Hot Plate plan I can eat exactly as I need to and just pile more veggies on his plate. He eats meat; he just complains when he thinks there’s too much. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    • Mel says:

So glad you like the Hot Plates approach! Honestly, that philosophy is the only way I’ve kept my sanity during three years of paleo eating. I’m the cook in the house, and churning out food for busy people is a lot of work. The Hot Plates have saved dinner (and breakfast and lunch) on many, many occasions. It’s great that you can adapt the approach to your hubby. YAY!

  • Mel says:

Thanks so much, everyone, for the enthusiasm and support! I hope you’re all starting to cook from Well Fed and are finding is useful.

If you have a few minutes, can you post a review to our Amazon page? It would help a ton. Thank you!

  • Monifah says:

Well i couldn’t wait so just ordered the PDF, always cook from the computer anyways (blogcooking!!) Looking forward to dinner tomorrow! Denmark is officially Well Fed now ;o) Yuhuuuu.. Hope the kiddies will be as happy as i am lol..

  • Amber says:

I am so excited!!! Just heard about this book less then a day ago and already ordered a copy on amazon. Then i discovered the free 30 page download and read the whole thing, getting more and more thrilled for a future of delicious food. I just wish I hadn’t opted for free shipping on amazon…it would get here a day or two faster if I had paid for standard shipping. I just can’t wait!!! Making the chocolate chili tonight (recipe in the free download). Thank you Mel for an amazing paleo cookbook!!! Most of the rest aren’t up to snuff. you can tell they were kind of done as after thoughts after the main book was published. But your book is clearly in a league of its own!

    • Mel says:

Wow! Thanks for the sweet words, Amber! Hope you liked the Chocolate Chili! It’s my husband Dave’s favorite recipe from the book. He told me he wants to eat it every day 😉

Have fun reading when Well Fed arrive at your house!

  • Elizabeth says:

Downloaded your sample pages and LOVE IT! Great lay out and I am super excited to buy the book. Will have to wait until next month’s budget (so sad!) but I’m definitely getting it.

  • Kelly B. says:

Um, YAY! Mel- love your site. I’m a part-time CF Level 1 and Kids Coach at CF Decatur in Atlanta. My husband is a full-time Level 2 Coach and I try to feed us as cleanly as possible. The Coach Glassman approach, of course- “If you want top-fuel type performance, you need top fuel; you can’t just piss into
the gas tank.” Absolutely floored by your recipes- they are amazing- and so tasty, which is important for those of us who love to train hard, but also really love food. I’ve shared a few of them with others and no one even believes how clean they are! Ahh- tricking people into Paleo. 🙂 Enjoying your blog, as well- you are clever and hilarious. I must admit- it was the “Pancakes in the Age of Enlightenment” that sealed the deal for me. So money. Can’t wait to get the book! I’ve already put a hint out for Christmas…

  • Molly says:

I am soooooo bummed! I ordered 4 copies of Well Fed from Amazon to give as Christmas gifts to my family. Have spent much time patting myself on the back for selecting the ultimate healthy, beautiful, awesomely cool gift! Just got an email from Amazon that, due to an unexpected delay from the supplier, my books will not get here in time for Christmas! Delayed til after January 2! How can this be??? I guess I can print some recipes from your site, but it just won’t be the same. I’m sad.

    • Mel says:

Oh… boo! I’m really sorry to hear that. I sent you an email… maybe we can come up with something helpful for you.

      Anyone else having this problem?

  • Lisa says:

They came they came they came!!!! Mel, I ordered 3 Well Fed from your site directly, and they weren’t promised until Dec 27. But they are here today, and I can give them out Sunday! I am SO stoked! I just sat down for the last hour and went through it and can’t wait to start making stuff. I’m bringing a nice pen to Whole30 seminar on Jan 7–will you sign them???

    • Mel says:

Hooray! So fun that they arrived early. Great job, Santa!

I would be absolutely delighted to sign your copy. Are you kidding me?! YAY!

  • mylinda says:

Melissa, my husband and I are just starting out in the Paleo/Primal world. We love it so far. We’re a week and 1/2 in and down 5 pounds eating bacon, avocado, and other yummy fatty goodness. I love your site and can’t wait to use Well Fed to make this an even more delicious journey. 🙂

    • Mel says:

Welcome! And congratulations on making the switch to paleo. That’s really great! Glad you’re finding the site helpful — and so happy you’ll be using Well Fed. Best to you, and keep us posted on how you’re doing!

  • Mom says:

I will admit that I was never a fan of cauliflower. Raw made my tummy hurt; cooked, it was tasteless and watery. But, thanks to you, my brilliant daughter, I can now add this pretty white vegetable to the list of veggies I likes. You know I seldom follow a recipe. Unlike you, I’m more a “dump and hope for the best” kind of cook. Last night I made your Cocoa Toasted Cauliflower completely by the book (Well Fed, that is). I followed your simple step by step instructions and did not play “you know how you could do that?” But, I did use Hershey’s 100% Cacao Dark Chocolate cocoa in place of regular cocoa. WOW! What a delicious sidedish. The best part, the leftovers won’t break down into mush when reheated. Thank you for sharing your secret to succulent cauliflower with your fans (like me) and thank you for being my brilliant daughter. You are Well Loved! xoxo Mommy

  • aca says:

Reading the book sample right now and love it!! Congrats!
I have a question- in the Weekly Cookup section under prepping vegestables, it says “you need about eight
cups of veggies per person per week”. That doesn’t seem right…just want to make sure i understand it right. I ABSOLUTELY love this section how to prepare/plan because its the part I struggle with the most!
I can’t wait to download the whole book when I get home 🙂

  • Doug says:

So the book arrived today (sweeet!), and I’m looking at the back cover for the code to get the $1 PDF version, and I’ll be darned if I can see a code. Can you give me a hint where to look?
