Review: Rocky Mountain Organic Meats

Before I started eating clean (and prior to viewing Food, Inc.), I thought that meat was meat. I didn’t concern myself with where or how the animal lived, what it ate, or its general health. I also didn’t think much about the taste variance in meat. Sure, I knew the $60 steak at Ruth’s Chris would taste better than the $7.99/lb. slab at my local grocery store, but for everyday eating, it didn’t register on my “care about it” list. I looked for the largest valu-pak with the lowest price, and I tossed it into my cart.

All of that has changed.

I now care fervently about the animals I eat because they make me strong and healthy and happy. I’m very grateful to the cows, pigs, chickens, lambs, and sea creatures that live and give their lives so I can thrive. I’m not sentimental about it, but I do like to acknowledge that the animals I eat were once walking around, eating, too… and I honor them in fulfilling their purpose when I savor the meals I make with them.

All of the animals from Rocky Mountain Organic Meats are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished with lots of room to roam, and they’re raised without steroids, growth hormones, antibiotics, and grains. As the web site says, “Our only additives are clean water, lush grasses, and fresh air…”

This ground beef was the best I’ve ever eaten.

You know I’m usually pretty heavy-handed with spices, but for this taste test, I wanted to let the meat flavor shine, so I kept it basic. I browned the ground beef with salt and pepper over medium heat, then served it on a deconstructed hamburger salad. No cumin, no garlic, no cayenne to get in the way… just meat. Best ground beef ever. It was tender and meaty, with a sweetness and richness that felt great on my tongue – and it had a lovely amount of fat without tasting greasy. Highly recommended.

Sirloin Steak
Again, I kept it simple: salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a little coconut oil in a saute pan. I seared the steak on each side over medium-high heat and cooked it to about medium-well. It was SO tender and flavorful – definitely competitive with the restaurant steak I mentioned above. Dave and I ate it like animals, standing at the kitchen island, oohing and aahing over the flavor… which is why I don’t have a photo of it. Sorry! My appetite overtook my commitment to photographic evidence for you. It looked like a really delicious steak, which it totally was.

Beef Jerky
Very, very good: tender and chewy, with a light touch of smoke. If you’re super strict about sugar, this might be a ‘no’ for you, but if you’re comfortable with trace sugar in high-quality food (which I am), this is a nice jerky to add to your list of possibilities. The ingredients are 100% USDA Certified Organic Grass Fed Beef, organic honey, water, organic sugar, sea salt, black pepper, celery juice powder, garlic powder.

Summer Sausage
I grew up rural Pennsylvania with Pennsylvania Dutch neighbors and farmers who made summer sausage from family recipes. This summer sausage tastes like that: meaty, with just the right amount of spice, and lovely marbling without tasting or feeling greasy. Excellent! And take a look at the ingredients: 100% USDA Certified Organic Grass Fed Beef, water, organic black pepper, organic nutmeg, organic mustard seed, organic granulated garlic, sea salt, and celery juice powder. This is quality FOOD, not mystery meat in a tube.

In addition to the meats I tried, they offer additional cuts of steak, roasts, and other deli meats, as well as helpful educational information about meat labeling. If you buy in quantity, the prices at Rocky Mountain Organic Meat are competitive with what I pay locally for grass-fed beef – but the flavor of Rocky Mountain is far superior… and if you spend a minimum of $200 (which is a nice freezer-full), shipping is free.

    I kept reading the name as Rocky Mountain ORGAN meats instead of Organic and kept wondering why you didn’t get any beef heart or liver in your sample pack. Obviously I need some sleep or spent too much time in the sun today. 🙂

    Hi Melissa
    I think its great that you are now eating organic. Hopefully his farm is also close to you so it is local as well.
    Another thing to ask a farmer when you are purchasing meat is how the animal is slaughtered. That makes a big difference on how tender the meat is. If the animal is stressed you will have tough meat. Hopefully its as humane as possible and the animal doesn’t know whats coming 🙂 I am blessed to have grown up on a farm and while it was always sad when our animals were sent for slaughter we were always taught to be grateful for the purpose they served.

    Mel, we have so many options local to the Austin area for humanely raised, grass-fed meats. And much more affordable than Rocky Mountain. I buy all my beef from Sara, who owns Wild Type Ranch in Cameron. She makes deliveries all over Austin and you can meet her in person and talk about her farming practices. Also, one good source for chicken and pork is Richardson Farms. They also come to Austin, namely at farmers’ markets.

      I’ll definitely check out Wild Type Ranch for beef. I order Richardson Farms pork through Farmhouse Delivery often, but I feel like it’s pretty expensive. I’m part of a group that’s buying directly from farms for some beef and recently wild boar (!) that’s only about $6 per pound, which is great… but the Rocky Mountain ground beef was seriously better than anything I’ve eaten locally — whether from a store or from a local farm.

    I read your site frequently, I love your recipes and your posts about lifting heavy weights! I also heart crossfit!

    I am excited to read this post in particular because I am moving to Austin from the Philly area at the end of this month and was wondering where I could find grass fed beef at reasonable prices! Thanks for the great info!

      Small world! I grew up in Pennsylvania — about 90 minutes from Philly.

      In the Austin area, Sprouts stores also have reasonably-priced grassfed beef. It’s pretty good, too — but not as tasty as the Rocky Mountain stuff I reviewed. As Kelsey said, there are also local farms for high-quality meat. I order mine through Farmhouse Delivery — I get my organic fruits & veggies from Farmhouse, then every week, you can also add meats, local cheeses, homemade condiments, and baked goods to your order. I REALLY like them a lot.

      Are you going to do CrossFit here?

        Wow it is a pretty small world. I am in the King of Prussia area right now and will be moving out to Austin with my job.

        I am definitely going to do crossfit – I figure that it will be the best way for my bf and me to meet some new people! I checked out a few crossfit gyms, when we visited the area and found one that is super close to work and they were really friendly – Westlake Crossfit

        I would definitely be up for some dino-chow! Will let you know when we get to the area. Maybe we will drop in on a class at your gym! You are at Crossfit Austin? I think that is a bit too south for us to have as our gym since we will be living in the arboretum area and heading to Lakeway for work.

    As my family and I are moving toward a paleo diet, we’ve also moved neighborhoods and lost our neighborhood butcher. Can you recommend any resources for finding grass-fed/pastured meat delivery in the NYC area, specifically Brooklyn? My internet searches aren’t very fruitful. Thanks!
