Give Yourself A 5-Star Rating
I love this post at Weightless. It’s a call to arms to make five short lists of five positive things about ourselves. Who wouldn’t benefit from a 5-star rating?!
Here are the five topics Margarita recommends:
Five things you love about yourself.
Five things your body can do (read my list)
Five things you’re grateful for (read my list)
Five things that make you happy you’re alive. (read my list)
Five people (or pets) who you love.
I thought it would be fun for us to try this exercise together for the next few days. Whatcha say?
Today’s assignment: 5 Things You Love About Yourself.
If you feel like sharing, post your responses to comments – and feel free to keep ’em short and sweet… or go to town and tell us all about you. You’re even welcome to email me and be a guest post-er, if you’d like.
5 Things I Love About Myself
1. I’m really good at finding the best thing on a restaurant menu, even if I’ve never eaten there before.
Apparently, I’m adept at imagining how the ingredients taste together, so even when descriptions sound odd or unexciting, what arrives on my plate is always the best dish on the table. Should we ever find ourselves dining together, you would not be remiss in letting me order for you. Just sayin’…
2. I can recite “Jabberwocky” from memory.
Our tenth grade English teacher required us to memorize a poem. I chose the Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, and I’ve never forgotten it. I will recite it by request if I’ve had a drink or two – and may perform it completely unprompted if I’ve had a drink or three. I can also do the opening rap from Kid Rock’s “Devil Without a Cause.”
3. I’m a professional-level crier.
Call me “moody” or “in touch with my emotions” or “sensitive”… I won’t argue with any of them. There’s nothing quite like the relief of a really good cry – so cleansing! And I’m never embarrassed by book- or movie- or even commercial-induced tears. Harry running through the streets of Manhattan on New Year’s Eve – in that awful jacket and white sneakers – to get to Sally and proclaim his love?! Gets me very time. And this: “Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you, and full as much heart!” And let’s not even think about this.
4. My playlists include Social D, Kid Rock, Rush, Barry Manilow, The Clash, J.Lo., and Smetana… and I’m not in the least embarrassed.
Why be bound by genre or cool-factor? I like what I like! And I don’t particularly like people who judge based on what others like.
5. I bounce.
Despite my predilection for (mostly) black clothing and (mostly) angry music – #4 above notwithstanding – and my fervent desire in college to be moody and mysterious, I’m generally a sunny person. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know I definitely have challenging, dark days – but they tend to not last too long. Life is a big adventure. Love abounds. I bounce.
