Review: Shurky Jurky
I think portable protein sources are one of the biggest challenges of living this dino-chow lifestyle. Sure, I can keep a cooler in my car and take advantage of the corporate loverlords’ refrigerator, but sometimes, I just want to throw some snacks in my bag and go.
Beef jerky seems like the perfect option… except for the ingredients panel. More often than not, sugar and soy are starring players in the marinade. FAIL.
That’s why I was thrilled when Mike Shur, founder of Shurky Jurky, offered me a free taste test of his handmade jerky.
Mike says he started making his own jerky because he was “fed up with unsatiating mass-produced jerkies.” I agree with that 100%. My past experience with jerky has always been solidly “meh” because it’s hard to chew and either has no flavor or has too much of that artificially-enhanced, processed taste that always makes me imagine just how scary food factories might be.
Shurky Jurky isn’t like that.
Mike makes his jerky from scratch with top-notch ingredients and a lot of zing! When I explained to him that soy and sugar – even in the form of best-quality honey – were on my no-go list, he custom-made a batch of jerky sweetened only with fresh pineapple and apple – the fruit, not just the juice. How badass is that?! And then he added sesame seeds, paprika, guajillo pepper, and black pepper for seasoning. Yum, right?!
Here’s the thing about this jerky: it tastes like meat!
The texture is tender and pleasantly chewy – and the flavors of the marinade complement rather than overhelm the meat. It’s flavorful with a little heat, but not disproportionately smoky or hot. This jerky tastes like Real Food. And I like knowing it was made by a real human… a real human that even takes requests.
Shurky Jurky is 100% raw, dried under 100 degrees F, and if you let Mike know your preferences, it can be compliant with even the strictest eating guidelines, including no soy or non-fruit-based sugars.
