Remember This Moment

I have been known to devour craptastic rags like People, Life & Style, and Us Weekly with the same voraciousness with which I snarf my post-workout sweet potatoes and eggs.

But this morning, I experienced the Moment That I Stopped Reading Us Weekly™ when I saw this poll:
Why am I reading this? We’re fighting two wars, have the worst economy since the Depression, and live in a country where both hunger and obesity are daily issues.

It’s a little early for New Year’s Resolutions, but here’s my pledge, just between us friends: I’m not reading this crap anymore. It will be as hard to give up as tortilla chips were, but I’m doing it for my good health.

Naturally Delicious?

Did you hear that? It was the sound of me bashing my own skull against my coffee table. There I was, sipping Bengal Spice tea,...

You know how some people need to learn to get in touch with their emotions? I'm definitely not one of those people. I know exactly...

    I am proud of you.

Almost a year ago, I had a realization. Nothing is neutral. Things you experience – read, watch, listen to, people you speak with – either add Good to your life, or suck the Good out of you. Nothing is neutral.

That was when I got rid of my TV, stopped reading the tabloids, stopped going out for drinks I didn't want with people I didn't love. I started watching movies that were beautiful and important, reading books that made me better, spending my time only with those people who enriched my life.

I have never, ever looked back, and my life is so much better for it. Yours will be too.

We killed our TV about 2 years ago and don't watch any broadcast anymore. Everything is DVD or Roku, which is only marginally better because I'm still watching TV, but at least (I rationalize), I'm choosing to watch something instead of just plopping and flipping.

The magazines are harder and I just went into my RSS feeds and killed a bunch of brain-killing blog feeds, too. That was rough! I'm not giving up the FugGirl. At least they're good writers!

    Thanks for the support, ladies!

Mel, I'm SO proud of your decision to ditch the junk mags (which is a feat unto itself) but also to take a second or two to actually THINK about what's going in the world around you. Bravo! There's a "vandal" in my town that stencils "To Think" below the word STOP on stop signs. It's GENIUS.

Melissa stated it beautifully above. I concur.
